Rankings used are from Media Poll.
#3 Eaton at #10 University
Last weekend was not kind to either team as both fell in week 1. Both teams will be looking to right the ship. Eaton fell in a heartbreaker 19 to 16. Eaton outgained TCA offensively and even won the turnover battle 2 to 1. Eaton just couldn’t punch it into the endzone. Eaton now looks for a bounce back against a tough opponent. University fell in the opening week to Dela 24 to 0. University did play tough defensively limiting Delta to just 24 points but struggled getting points on the board. University was outgained by Delta and now University will look to clean up the offense and get going this week. This should be a great game between two teams looking to get back on track.
Steamboat Springs at Moffat County
This matchup has turned into a very interesting game. Steamboat Springs got a win in the opening week defeating Coal Ridge 17-6. They had a huge game offensively racking up over 400 yards but lost the turnover battle which limited their points scored. Steamboat Springs now looks for a huge key win. Moffat County stumbled out of the gate falling to Resurrection Christian 36-6. Moffat County struggled to get the passing attack going and were limited on the ground. Moffat County will look to clean a few things up offensively but defensively must also show big improvement. This is a big game for Moffat County as they look to right the ship.
#7 La Junta at Pagosa Springs
La Junta got out to a very exciting start to the season coming from behind to beat Burlington 42-34. La Junta had a huge second half mainly due to winning the turnover battle 3 to 1. La Junta did have a solid performance on offense with QB Luke Garner throwing for 3 TDs. Defensively La Junta did win the turnover battle but gave up over 300 yards rushing to Burlington. Look for La Junta to solidify their defense this week. Pagosa Springs fell in their opening to Centauri 33-0. Pagosa Springs was in the game at halftime down just 14 to 0. Defensively Pagosa Springs played tough but were stuck on the field for a long time. Offensively Pagosa Springs must find improvement heading into week 2. Both teams in this matchup have things to fix and should make for a good matchup.
Manitou Springs vs Rye (1A)
I believe this will be a great matchup! Both teams had bye’s last week, so this is their official kickoff for the season. Manitou Springs will enter with their QB back but will be young on the offensive line and defensively. Manitou Springs will be tested by a physical rushing attack. Rye will enter with a lot of returners back and should improve this season. Look for Rye to be physical running the ball but must be ready to defend the pass this week. Should be a great game between two different styles of play.
#6 Elizabeth at Burlington (1A)
I think we are in for a special treat in this game. This could be a very high scoring game and should be a blast to watch. Elizabeth got off to a hot start defeating D’Evelyn 38 to 24. Elizabeth offensively got things rolling on the ground rushing for over 300 yards and RB Ethan Stone had himself a day. Defensively Elizabeth stuffed the run giving up just 6 yards rushing. Elizabeth did give up over 350 yards passing but forced 2 INTs and 2 fumbles as well. Elizabeth will be facing a much more run oriented team this week. Burlington fell in week 1 to La Junta 42 to 34. Burlington played very tough last week but a few turnovers and a tough second half cost them. Burlington had a huge day running the ball rushing for 300 yards. The passing attack will need to improve after throwing two INTs. Burlington will need to be physical on both sides of the ball this week again. I do think this could be a high scoring game and should be fun to watch.
Valley at Berthoud
Another interesting matchup between these two teams. Valley did not play a game last weekend, so they kick off their 2022 campaign this week. Valley will be looking to build off their 2-7 season last year and they should with key starters back. They will be playing a Berthoud team who is coming off a key win last week. Berthoud got out the gates hot defeating Timnath 48-0. This will be a tougher test this week as they are looking to prove they belong in the playoff discussion. Berthoud must keep the rushing attack going. I expect this to be a test for both teams and this could be a key game for both teams as they fight for a playoff spot.
Bennett at Sterling
This is a very good matchup between two playoff hopeful teams, and this should give us a great insight into some other matchups. Bennett picked up a key 38-7 win over Weld Central last week. Bennett was dominate offensively racking up over 300 yards of offense. Defensively Bennett limited what Weld Central did and gave up just over 200 yards. Bennett will be tested by Sterling this week. Sterling enters this matchup after falling to Yuma 56-14. Sterling struggled defensively giving up over 475 yards of offense. Sterling must improve defensively this week as they face another run heavy team. Offensively Sterling did find some success but were limited. I know this is a very early matchup, but I think this game has huge implications for the playoff race.
Fort Morgan (3A) at Brush
Brush will travel down I-76 to face rival Fort Morgan and should be a great matchup. Fort Morgan enters at 0-1 after falling to Conifer 13-10. Defensively Fort Morgan played tough limiting Conifer offensively to under 200 yards. Offensively Fort Morgan did struggle just scoring the 10 point and throwing 2 INTs. Fort Morgan will look to bounce back this week against a tough Brush team. Brush also enters at 0-1 falling to 1A Wiggins 27-7. Brush also played tough defensively limiting a very explosive offense to under 300 yards. Brush must get their offense going this week. I think this could be a very low scoring game with both teams defensively taking control of this game.
Salida at Woodland Park
I believe this is going to be a very important matchup for both teams as they head deeper into the season. Salida enters at 0-1 falling to Buena Vista 26-16. This was a great game for Salida as they surprised many holding Buena Vista to just 26 points. Salida played extremely well defensively and must continue that into this week’s game. Offensively Salida was able to score points on Buena Vista and will look to continue to develop this week. Woodland Park also enters at 0-1 after falling to 3A Summit 17-0. Offensively Woodland Park struggled. Woodland Park did not break the century mark on offense and must improve on that side of the ball. Defensively Woodland Park did play well limiting Summit to under 100 yards rushing and forcing 3 turnovers. Like I mentioned I think this is a very important game going forward for both teams.
Montezuma-Cortez at Rifle
Another measurement game as both teams enter looking to keep hot. Montezuma-Cortez enter at 1-0 defeating Aztec NM 17-8. This was a very solid win for Montezuma-Cortez as they lost to Aztec a season ago. Cortez will now look to build off their win and face a traditional power in Rifle. Rifle did not play last week and kick things off this week. Rifle will look to build off a 3-6 season. Rifle has plenty of room to improve and that is why I think this is a big game. Both teams are looking to prove something this season and should make for a great game.
#2 Centauri at #8 Florence (2A)
A huge game to kickoff another exciting week in Class 1A. Centauri vs Florence is a huge game for both teams and should be an exciting one. Centauri enters at 1-0 and are coming off a 33-0 win over Pagosa Springs. Centauri offensively struggled early scoring just 14 points in the first half but ramped things up in the second half. Defensively Centauri played lights out limiting a solid offensive attack from Pagosa Springs. Centauri will be tested in this game. Florence enter at 0-1 falling to Limon 20 to 3. Florence offensively struggled running the ball. Florence had -8 yards rushing. The passing attack for Florence did find more success but with a limited rushing attack put a ton of pressure on the QB. Defensively Florence played tough limiting Limon to just 210 yards of offense. Florence also forced 3 INTs and really limited the passing attack. Florence should feel good about their defense but must get the offense going. I have a feeling we won’t see many points scored in this week’s game. Should be a very physical game as well!
#5 Wiggins at #6 Strasburg
We keep the train rolling in top matchups in Class 1A with another top 10 battle. Wiggins travels to Strasburg and this should be a great game. Wiggins enters at 1-0 coming off a physical battle with Brush 27-7. Wiggins defensively had a great game forcing 3 turnovers and limiting Brush to just 7 points. Offensively Wiggins was solid with just under 300 yards of total offense. Wiggins will look to build off last weeks game as they face another physical team in Strasburg. Strasburg enters at 1-0 coming off a 37-6 win over Holyoke. Strasburg defensively played a great game and limited what Holyoke wanted to do. Offensively Strasburg racked up over 300 yards of total offense and were able to run the ball effectively racking up 265 yards of rushing. Expect a physical game but I think we will see some points scored in this game.
#3 Fleming vs North Park (Saturday)
A league matchup to open the season and this puts that much more of an emphasis on this game. Fleming returns a ton of talent from last year’s team but will have a few holes to fill. North Park also returns a lot of talent, and they hope to reach the playoffs this season. This will be a physical battle and look for both teams to be 1-0 in league play.
#7 Meeker at #1 Limon
Like I mentioned this week is full of great games and we continue that with another top 10 battle. Meeker travels to Limon in what seem like a yearly matchup. Meeker is coming off a 28-0 win over rival North Fork. Meeker offensively had a solid day racking up over 300 yards offense and getting a big performance from RB Clay Crawford. Defensively Meeker did give up some yardage but kept North Fork out of the endzone. Meeker face another physical team and look for a huge upset. Limon enters at 1-0 coming off a huge 20-3 win over Florence. Limon defensively played lights out holding Florence to negative yards rushing and keeping them out of the endzone. Offensively Limon found some success but must clean up the passing attack a bit. Limon looks to be developing a three headed monster in the backfield. Limon will look to continue their defensive success this week against Meeker. This should be a great game and a good measuring stick for where both teams are.
#8 Monte Vista vs C.S Christian
Not a top 10 matchup but another huge matchup between two playoff hopeful teams. Monte Vista enters the matchup following a 54-0 win over Rocky Ford. Monte Vista made quick work of Rocky Ford and had solid performances on offense. Andrew Chavez made his first start at QB and had a solid day. Defensively Monte Vista held Rocky Ford to under 100 yards of total defense and forced 7 turnovers. This week matchup will be much more difficult and should be a good test. C.S Christian enters the matchup following a very fun 34-31 victory over Flatirons Academy. C.S Christian defensively struggled in the first half but really locked things down in the second half and allowed for the come back win. C.S Christian defensively also made a huge goal line stand to win the game with under a minute left. Offensively C.S Christian struggled in the first half but scored 28 points in the 3rd quarter to take the lead and hold on late. This will be a very interesting matchup as both teams play different styles of football and should be a good game.
#10 Gunnison vs Alamosa (2A)
Let’s keep the good matchups rolling with another good matchup. Gunnison vs Alamosa is a very good matchup and a big one for both teams early on. Gunnison is coming off a 45-0 win over 2A Aspen last week. Gunnison defensively pitched the shutout and had a solid game plan. Offensively Gunnison scored 21 in the first half and then dominated in the second half to get running clock going. This will be a much tougher test for both Gunnison offense and defense. Gunnison will have to defend the pass well and offensively must get the rushing attack going to open the passing. Alamosa is coming off a tough 40-29 loss to 3A Pueblo Central. Alamosa offensively did find success racking up over 400 yards of total offense, but turnovers killed them with over 3 turnovers in the game. Defensively Alamosa must improve on stopping the run and will be tested again this week. Both teams are looking for a key win and this could be it for both teams.
Wray vs Goodland KS
A yearly battle between these two schools continues. Wray and Goodland KS is always a interesting game to watch. Goodland KS plays Class 3A in KS which is close to Class 1A now in Colorado. Goodland went 2-7 last season and have not kicked the 2022 season off. Wray enters at 1-0 and coming off a 46-0 win over Highland. Wray dominated defensively holding Highland under 50 yards of total offense. Offensively Wray made quick work of Highland with solid outings from QB Casey Midcap and RB Brady Collins. This is always an interesting matchup and should be fun to watch.
Cedaredge at Grand Valley (2A)
I think another great matchup this weekend and probably one overlooked. Cedaredge vs Grand Valley is a very solid matchup and I think a big one to tell where each school ranks. Cedaredge enters at 1-0 and are coming off a solid 27-0 win over Peyton. Offensively Cedaredge had a big game from QB Luke Maxey who threw for over 200 yards and 3 TDs. This was a big performance that powered them for the win. Defensively Cedaredge pitched the shutout and held Peyton to under 175 yards of total offense. Cedaredge will be challenged again by Grand Valley and will be a good test. Grand Valley kicked off 2022 with a 53-8 win over Ellicott. Grand Valley had a great day running the ball rushing for over 345 yards. Grand Valley defensively played well forcing 4 sacks and 2 turnovers. Grand Valley secondary will be tested this weekend. This should be a great game and a game both teams need.
Platte Canyon at Flatirons Academy
Another underrated game and another important game for playoff implications early on. Platte Canyon is coming off a come from behind win over Center 26-21. Platte Canyon was down 21-6 in the third quarter but roared back to win 26-21. Platte Canyon defensively played much better in the second half but did give up over 400 yards of offense. Offensively Platte Canyon played well racking up 400 yards of total offense. QB David Fouts had a big game to lead all players. Platte Canyon has another big game and must be ready for a physical rushing attack. Flatirons Academy enters at 0-1 and come off a 34-31 loss to C.S Christian. Flatirons Academy was up at halftime but quickly found themselves trailing heading into the fourth quarter 34-24. Flatirons Academy made a furious run but were stopped on the goal line. Offensively Flatirons Academy played well rushing for over 250 yards. Devin Glowicki had a big game for Flatirons Academy. Defensively Flatirons Academy played well in the first half but in the second half gave up a lot of yards and points. Flatirons Academy will face another pass attack this week and we will see how much they improve. This is a great matchup and looking forward to seeing who comes out on top!
Middle Park at Estes Park
I think another underrated game, but I think a very good game in this matchup. Middle Park enters at 1-0 and are coming off a 16-0 win over Pinnacle. Middle Park had a decent day offensively. Middle Park was able to rack up 178 yards rushing and had a big day from RB Xavier Martinez. Middle Park defensively played well shutting out Pinnacle and holding them to just over 100 yards of total offense. Middle Park will be tested this week by Estes Park. Estes Park enters with the 34-14 win over Wellington. Estes Park offensively had a solid day scoring 34 points but must limit the turnover after throwing 4 INTs. Defensively Estes Park played well limiting the points the gave up, but they did give up over 300 yards of offense. Estes Park will have to make some adjustments this week as they look to move to 2-0.
#9 Yuma at Burns WY
We wrap up my top 10 games with another out of state game. Yuma travels to face Burns WY. Burns WY was 2-7 last season in Class 2A in Wyoming. Burns at times has been a top team in WY and is always a good test for Yuma. Yuma got off to a solid start defeating Sterling last week 56-14. Yuma had a huge day offensively racking up over 450 yards of total offense. QB Silas Baucke and RB Jack Blecha had big games. Yuma will look to keep turning heads this week against Burns WY.
