Class 1A Football Quarterfinal Preview

We kick of the Quarterfinal of the Class 1A State Playoff Friday Night.  Some great Quarterfinal matchups will happen and look for a great Weekend of Football.

#1 Limon vs #8 Monte Vista, Saturday at 1pm

Limon moved into the Class 1A Quarterfinals with a 42 to 14 victory over Flatirons Academy.  Limon moves to 10-0 on the season and set up a matchup with Monte Vista at home.  Limon passing attack was used minimally this week with QB Jordan Rockwell throwing just 5 times for 47 yards.  Limon rushing paced the offense racking up 334 yards rushing and averaging 10.1 yards per carry.  Gabe Schubarth led all rushers with 188 yards and Lohgan Bottjer also chipped in with 112 yards.  Both RBs had 3 rushing TDs a piece.  Defensively Limon played well holding Flatirons Academy to 244 yards total.  Miguel Nunez led all tacklers with 8 tackles, Keon Bandy (7 tackles), and Jace Pfost (6 tackles) also chipped in well on defense.  Limon also forced two fumbles in the game recovered by Lohgan Bottjer and Tuck Hubbard. 

Monte Vista moved into the Class 1A Quarterfinals with a 28-21 win over Holyoke.  Monte Vista improves to 9-1 on the season and they will travel to face Limon.  Monte Vista offensively had a big day racking up 417 yards of total offense.  Monte Vista passing attack was led by Andrew Chavez who threw for 97 yards passing and 1 TD.  Chavez also had 88 yards rushing and 2 rushing TDs.  Monte Vista rushing attack had a big day with 320 yards of total rushing.  Kevin Cisneros led all rushers 124 yards rushing and 1 rushing TD, and Khegan Gunter also contributed 108 yards rushing.  Defensively Monte Vista was able to slow the passing attack of Holyoke.  Monte Vista forced 3 turnovers in the game and had 2 sacks.  Jaxon Martinez led all tacklers with 12 tackles, Esteban Lujan, Andrew Chavez, and Jacob Pacheco all contributed with 9 tackles on defense.

Monte Vista and Limon have faced each other once in the past 10 years.  Limon won that meeting 15-14.  These two teams have 1 common opponent this season in Holyoke.  Limon beat Holyoke 60-27 and Monte Vista won 28-21.

#5 Yuma at #13 C.S Christian, Friday at 6pm

Yuma moved into the Class 1A Quarterfinals with a 42-6 win over Rye.  Yuma improved to 7-3 on the season and snapped a 3-game losing streak.  Yuma now travels to face C.S Christian.  Yuma offensively does not throw the ball much and this game showed that with Yuma attempting one pass for 10 yards.  Yuma rushing attack was the main offensive threat with Yuma racking up 335 yards rushing and averaging 7.6 yards per carry.  Nash Richardson led all rushers with 109 yards rushing and 2 rushing TDs, and Ethan Goeglein chipped in with 102 yards rushing and 2 rushing TDs.  Defensively Yuma had a great game plan limiting Rye to just 196 yards of total offense.  Kallen Blach led all tackles with 9 tackles.  Kevin Hermosillo and Cesar Varela chipped in with 6 tackles a piece.  Yuma also forced 1 Fumble recovered by Nash Richardson and 1 INT to Daman Hernandez.

C.S Christian moves into the Class 1A Quarterfinals upsetting #4 Buena Vista 21-18.  C.S Christian improves to 7-3 on the season and they will host Yuma this week.  C.S Christian had a big offensive day racking up 454 yards of total offense.  QB Jace Velasquez had a big day throwing the ball with 190 yards passing and 1 passing TD.  The rushing attack for C.S Christian also got rolling with 264 yards rushing.  Ashton Lofton led all rushers 144 yards rushing and 2 rushing TDs, Casey Orawiec also contributed 53 yards rushing.  Defensively C.S Christian made key stops and limited Buena Vista to 267 yards of total offense.  Alex Niederhauser led all tacklers with 16 tackles, Eddie Harmon (15 tackles), Conner Thomas (11 tackles), Jonah Bullcok (11 Tackles) also contributed on defense.  C.S Christian was able to get in the backfield with 11 TFL and 2 Sacks.

These two teams last meet in the playoffs in 2019 with C.S Christian winning 17-14.  These two teams do have 2 common opponents in Banning Lewis and Rye.  Yuma went 2-0 against both opponents winning 49-0 and 42-6.  C.S Christian went 1-1 beating Banning Lewis 26-22 and losing to Rye 31-29.

#2 Strasburg vs #7 Centauri, Saturday at 1pm

Strasburg moves into the Class 1A Quarterfinals with a 41-7 win over Burlington.  Strasburg improves to 9-1 on the season and they will host Centauri this week.  Strasburg had a big day offensively racking up 405 yards of total offense.  QB Landen Martin was effective leading the offense with 99 yards passing and 1 passing TD.  The rushing attack for Strasburg was dominate racking up 306 yards and 7.5 yards per carry.  Zach Marrero led all rushers with 207 yards and 2 rushing TDs and Thomas Devlin chipped in with 69 yards rushing and 1 rushing TD.  Defensively Strasburg forced 2 turnovers in the game 1 Fumble recovery by Austin Velasco and 1 INT by Hayden Turner.  DJ Cannon led all tacklers with 9 tackles, Zachary Rushman (7 tackles), Egen Stephens (5 tackles), and Jesse Hilton (5 tackles) also had big contributions on defense.

Centauri moves into the Class 1A Quarterfinal with a 26-14 win over Gunnison.  Centauri improves to 5-2 on the season and they will hit the road to face Strasburg.  Centauri was effective on offense racking up 266 yards of total offense.  QB Leighton Curtis had 43 yards passing and 1 passing TD.  Centauri rushing attack powered the day with 223 yards rushing.  Austin Stockebrand led all rushers with 119 yards and 1 rushing TD, Leighton Curtis also contributed 75 yards and 1 rushing TD.  Defensively Centauri was flying around forcing 1 Fumble, 3 INTs, and 1 blocked Punt for a TD.  Troy Huffaker and Josh Polkowske led all tacklers with 16 in the game.  Kiler Ullery (13 tackles), Blade Absmeier (11 tackles), and Ivan Lopez (11 tackles) also had big performances on defense.

Centauri vs Strasburg has been a staple in the playoffs the past few years.  Centauri vs Strasburg did not happen last season but previously they meet in 2020, 2019, 2018, and 2017.  Strasburg is undefeated against Centauri in the playoffs. 

#3 Wiggins vs #6 Wray, Saturday at 1pm

Wiggins moves into the Class 1A Quarterfinals with a 52-20 win over North Fork.  Wiggins improves to 7-3 on the season and they will host Wray this week.  Wiggins offensively had a good day racking up 418 yards of total offense.  Wiggins passing attack was effective with QB Cole Kerr throwing for 59 yards.  The rushing attack had a big day racking up 359 yards rushing and 7.3 yards per carry.  Julio Flores led all rushers with 145 yards rushing and 2 rushing TDs, Cole Kerr also had big contributions with 126 yards rushing and 4 rushing TDs.  Defensively Wiggins was able to limit North Fork to under 200 yards of total offense.  Pepper Rusher led all tacklers with 12 tackles.  Cole Kerr, Julio Flores, Laith Ibrahim, and Americo Lorenzini all pitched in with 4 tackles.  Wiggins also forced 2 INTs in the game 1 by Trey Huwa and Cole Kerr.

Wray moves into the Class 1A Quarterfinals with a 34-0 win over Meeker.  Wray improves to 7-3 on the season and will travel to face league rival Wiggins this week.  Wray offensively had a balanced day with 388 yards of total offense.  QB Casey Midcap led the passing attack with 132 yards and 1 passing TD.  The rushing attack had success with 256 yards of total rushing.  Samuel Meisner led all rushers with 120 yards and 3 rushing TDs, Brady Collins also chipped in with 101 yards and 1 rushing TD.  Defensively Wray had a dominate day holding Meeker to just 26 yards of total offense.  Wray forced 3 turnovers in the game 2 fumbles and 1 INT.  Wray defense was led by Samuel Meisner who had 13 tackles and Brady Collins was second with 8 tackles.  Aaron Tena, Casey Midcap, and Camden Riggleman also chipped in 4 tackles each. 

These two teams are league rivals and know each other very well.  The one thing I saw is that in the past 10 years these two teams have not meet in the playoffs.  Wray and Wiggins did play each other this season with Wiggins getting a 28-14 win over Wray.  This is a rematch on the same field but different time.
