Class 2A Boys Basketball Weekly Update Regionals

Regionals are upon us, and it’s win or go home.  32 teams in 8 regions compete for just 8 spots at the State Tournament.  Good Luck to all teams fighting for a shot to win a State Championship.  Plenty of great matchups and we dive into all 8 regions.  All first-round games are Friday 3/1 unless noted otherwise.

Region 1-Hosted by Simla

#1 Simla vs #32 Cotopaxi @4pm

#16 Telluride vs #17 Burlington @5:30pm

Simla comes into regionals as the #1 seed and sit with a perfect 22-0 record.  Simla won the District 8 Tournament.  They defeated ECA 62 to 24 in the opening round, defeated Byers 60 to 35 in the Semifinals, and defeated Limon 57 to 52 to win the tournament.  Simla played 18 out of 22 games against teams who have reached Regionals.  Simla went 18-0 against those teams.  Simla has not posted stats for the season.  Simla opponent in the opening round of regionals is Cotopaxi.  Cotopaxi comes into regionals as the #32 overall seed.  Cotopaxi is 12-8 on the season and come into regionals on a bit of a slide losing 5 of their past 8 games.  Cotopaxi lost in the Quarterfinals to Del Norte in the District 1 Tournament.  Cotopaxi played against 5 teams who made it to regionals going 1-4 against those teams.  Cotopaxi is led by Terrance Evans (20.6ppg) and Joel Tezak (14.2 ppg).

Telluride comes into regionals as the #16 seed.  Telluride has a 14-7 record coming into regionals and ended the season going 3-2 in their final 5 games.  Telluride finished 2nd in the District 3 Tournament defeating Ridgway 56 to 35 before falling to Mancos 54 to 51 in the District Championship.  Telluride played against 9 teams who reached the regional tournament going 2-7 against those teams.  Telluride is led by Townes Merritt (15.4 ppg) and Grayson Berry (15-0 ppg).  Telluride will face #17 Burlington to open regionals.  Burlington enters regionals with a 10-10 record and winner of 3 of their last 4 games.  Burington finished with a trip to the Semifinals in District Tournament play.  Burlington went 1-1 defeating CS School 49 to 43 and fell to Limon 55 to 37 in the semifinals.  Burlington played 12 games against teams who reached the regional tournament.  Burlington went 5-7 against those teams.  Burlington is led by Keziah Williams (19.5 ppg) and Daniel Chacon (8.7 ppg).

Merino comes into regionals as the #2 seed and sit with a 19-3 record.  Merino is on a bit of a hot streak winning their past 6 games.  Merino won the District 2 Tournament defeating Haxtun 67 to 33, Akron 51 to 46 in OT, and Wray 47 to 44 in the Championship.  Merino played 18 of their 22 games against teams who made it to regionals.  Merino went 15-3 against those teams who made it to regionals.  Merino is led by Tyler Miller (18.5 ppg) and Jaxon Samber (11.5 ppg).  Merino will open regionals against #31 Evangelical Christian.  ECA come into regionals as the #31 seed and sit with a 8-13 record.  ECA comes into regionals on a bit of a slide going 2-4 in their final 6 games.  ECA reached the first round defeating Calhan in the play-in game 60 to 41 before falling to Simla 62 to 24 in the opening round.  ECA played against 11 teams who reached regionals.  ECA went 1-10 against those teams who reached regionals.  ECA is led by Brock Jones (17.7 ppg) and Bo Galliart (16.2 ppg).

Walsenburg comes into regionals at the #15 seed.  Walsenburg sits at 14-7 overall and 3-2 in their final 5 games.  Walsenburg took 4th in the District 6 Tournament going 1-2.  Walsenburg defeated Las Animas 70 to 55 before falling to Crowley County (51-29) and Fowler (44-33).  Walsenburg played against 10 teams who reached regionals going 5-5 against those teams.  Walsenburg is led by Elton Chavez (21.5 ppg) and Nino Cisneros (10.4 ppg).  Walsenburg will face #18 Monte Vista in the opening round of regionals.  Monte Vista comes into regionals as the #18 seed and with a 14-7 record.  Monte Vista comes in on a bit of a hot streak going 8-2 in their last 10 games.  Monte Vista took second in the District 1 tournament defeating Center 55 to 26 & Sargent 41 to 36 before falling in the District Championship to Sanford.  Monte Vista played against 10 teams who made it to regionals going 4-6 against those teams.  Monte Vista is led by Azariah Hurtado (12.7 ppg) and Alex Marquez (10.3 ppg).

Region 3-Hosted by Crowley County

#3 Crowley County vs #30 Addenbrooke Classical @5:30pm

Crowley County comes into regionals as the #3 seed and sitting with a perfect 21-0 record.  Crowley County won the District 6 Tournament defeating Swallows Charter (69-35), Walsenburg (51-29), and Holly 56 to 38 to win the Championship.  Crowley County played 14 of their 21 games against teams who reached the regional tournament.  Crowley County went 14-0 against those teams.  Crowley County is led by Gunner Hughes (21.0 ppg) and Elijah Mcneil (11.4 ppg).  Crowley County will face #30 Addenbrooke Classical in the opening round.  Addenbrooke Classical is the #30 seed and enter with a 12-10 record.  Addenbrooke Classical got hot at the right time winning 4 of their last 6 games.  Addenbrooke Classical took 2nd in the District 7 Tournament defeating Gilpin County (76-28) and Golden View Classical (76-58) but fell to Denver Christian 69 to 34 in the Championship game.  Addenbrooke Classical played 9 teams who made it to regionals going 1-8 against those teams.  Addenbrooke Classical is led by Calum Michelsen (11.7 ppg) and Riley Summer (9.6 ppg). 

Byers enters regionals as the #14 seed.  Byers sits at 12-9 overall and ended the season going 3-3 in their final 6 games.  Byers reached the Semifinals of the District 8 Tournament.  Byers defeated Elbert 67 to 47 in the opening round before falling to Simla 60 to 35 in the semifinals.  Byers played 16 of their 21 games against teams who reached regionals.  Byers 7-9 against those teams.  Byers is led by Quincy Eacret (13.7 ppg) and Chase Long (10.3 ppg).  Byers will open regional play against #19 Vail Christian.  Vail Christian comes into regionals as the #19 seed and sit with a 13-8 record.  Vail Christian has heated up down the stretch going 5-1 in their last 6 games.  Vail Christian took 2nd in the District 5 tournament defeating Soroco (57-30) and Vail Mountain (56-48) before falling to Plateau Valley 62 to 33.  Vail Christian played 7 games against regional teams going 2-5 against those teams.  Vail Christian is led by Will Neumann (13.9 ppg) and Jack Pryor (9.5 ppg).

Plateau Valley comes into regionals as the #4 seed and hosting region 4.  Plateau Valley sits with a 20-1 record and winner of their last 20 games only dropping the season opener to 4A Aspen.  Plateau Valley won the District 5 tournament defeating Haden (57-18) and Vail Christian (62-33) to win it all.  Plateau Valley faced 12 teams who qualified for regionals/state going 11-1 against those teams.  Plateau Valley is led by Jack Vig (16.8 ppg) and Jackson Bevan (10.4 ppg).  Plateau Valley will open regional play against #29 Wiggins.  Wiggins enters regionals as the #29 seed and with a record of 7-13.  Wiggins is on a bit of a slide losing their last 5 games in a row.  Wiggins lost in the opening round of the District 2 tournament to Akron 36 to 32.  Wiggins did play a tough schedule with 16 of their 20 games against regional teams.  Wiggins went 4 and 12 against those regional teams.  Wiggins is led by JR Meyer (10.1 ppg) and Trey Huwa (9.8 ppg).

Fowler enters regionals as the #13 seed.  Fowler sits at 15-7 overall and have won 6 of their last 8 games.  Fowler took 3rd in the District 6 Tournament.  Fowler defeated Swink to open district play 41 to 28 before falling to Holly in 2OT 52 to 50 but Fowler bounced back taking 3rd and defeating Walsenburg 44 to 33.  Fowler faced 15 teams who reached the regional tournament.  Fowler went 8-7 against those teams.  Fowler is led by Gage Gottbehuet (17.1 ppg) and Harrison Proctor (9.4 ppg).  Fowler will open regional play against #20 Sargent.  Sargent comes into regionals with a 15-6 record and the #20 seed.  Sargent ended the year going 3-3 in their final 6 games.  Sargent lost in the semifinals going 1-1 in district tournament play.  Sargent defeated Custer County 45-32 before falling to Monte Vista 41 to 36.  Sargent faced 11 teams who reached the regional tournament going 5-6 against those teams.  Sargent is led by Hayden Lester (9.7 ppg) and Trenton Pasket (8.6 ppg).

Region 5-Hosted by Heritage Christian

#5 Heritage Christian vs #28 Las Animas @5pm

#12 Holyoke vs #21 Vail Mountain @7pm

Heritage Christian enters regionals as the #5 seed and come in with a 19-2 record.  Heritage Christian is on a 10-game winning streak to end the season and their only losses this season are to 3A #3 Machebeuf and 4A #4 Pagosa Springs.  Heritage Christian won the District 4 tournament defeating Dayspring Christian (57 to 29) and Union Colony Prep 74 to 42.  Heritage Christian played 10 games against teams who made it to regionals/state.  Heritage Christian went 8-2 against those teams.  Heritage Christian is led by Raul Bertinato (17.2 ppg) and Levi Hermsen (12.6 ppg).  Heritage Christian will open regional play against #28 Las Animas. Las Animas comes in with a 10-10 record and the #28 seed.  Las Animas went 3-3 in their final 6 games.  Las Animas fell in the opening round of the District 6 tournament to Walsenburg 70 to 55.  Las Animas played 11 games against regional teams going 3-8 against those teams.  Las Animas is led by TJ Ortiz (15.9 ppg) and Brander Nichols (11.9 ppg). 

Holyoke comes into regionals as the #12 seed and with a 13-7 record.  Holyoke ended the year strong winning 5 of their last 6 games.  Holyoke lost in the semifinals of the District 2 tournament going 1-1.  Holyoke defeated Sedgwick County 69 to 44 and fell to Wray 66 to 60.  Holyoke played 13 games against regional teams going 7-6 against those teams.  Holyoke is led by Wyatt Sprague (16.9 ppg) and Reid Sprague (11.4 ppg).  Holyoke will open regional play against Vail Mountain.  Vail Mountain is the #21 seed in the regional tournament and sit with a 14-8 record.  Vail Mountain ended the year going 3-3 in their final 6 games.  Vail Mountain took 3rd in the District 5 Tournament going 2-1.  Vail Mountain defeated West Grand 74-19 before falling to Vail Christian 56 to 48 but bounced back nicely defeating Hayden 68 to 37 to take 3rd.  Vail Mountain played 8 games against regional teams going 3-5 against those teams.  Vail Mountain is led by Trevor Donovan (8.5 ppg) & Christian Mills (8.4 ppg).

Region 6-Hosted by Sanford

#6 Sanford vs #27 Golden View Classical @2:30pm

#11 Holly vs #22 Loveland Classical @5:30pm

Sanford enters regionals as the #6 seed in the regional tournament.  Sanford sits at 18-4 overall and winner of their last 14 games.  Sanford last loss was in early January to 4A Alamosa and 4A Pagosa springs.  Sanford won the District 1 tournament defeating Trinidad (65-28), Del Norte (57-30), and Monte Vista 57 to 37.  Sanford played 15 of their 22 games against regional/state teams going 11-4 against those teams.  Sanford is led by Cash Caldon (16.0 ppg) and Trason Gartrell (10.6 ppg).  Sanford will open regional play against #27 Golden View Classical.  Golden View Classical is the #27 seed and sit at 10-11 overall.  Golden View Classical ended the season going 3-3 in their final 6 games.  Golden View Classical took 3rd in the District 4 tournament going 1-1.  Golden View Classical lost to Addenbrooke Classical 76 to 58 but they bounced back defeating Front Range Christian 64 to 57.  Golden View Classical played 13 games against regional teams going 2-11 against those teams.  Golden View Classical is led by Luke Chronowski (9.4 ppg) and Jacob Walker (9.3 ppg).

Holly comes into regionals as the #11 seed.  Holly is 16-6 on the season and finished the season strong going 6-2 in their last 8 games.  Holly was runner up in the District 6 Tournament going 2-1.  Holly defeated Hoehne 67-54 and Fowler 52-50 in 2OT.  Holly then fell to Crowley County 56 to 38 in the district championship.  Holly played 16 of their 22 games against teams who reached regionals.  Holly went 11-5 in those games.  Holly is led by Truman King (15.5 ppg) and Devin Eaton (15.4 ppg).  Holly will open regional play against Loveland Classical.  Loveland Classical is 15-6 on the year and are the #22 seed at regionals.  Loveland Classical ended the year winning 7 of their last 8 games but were upset in the opening round of the District 7 Tournament by Union Colony Prep 59 to 53.  Loveland Classical played 10 games against teams who reached regionals going 7-3 in those games.  Loveland Classical is led by Caedon Meyer (17.0 ppg) and Luke Sainz (12.5 ppg).

Denver Christian comes into regionals as the #7 seed.  Denver Christian is 16-5 to end the season and have won 7 of their last 8 games.  Denver Christian won the District 7 Tournament defeating Front Range Christian 81-36 and Addenbrooke Classical 69 to 34.  Denver Christian faced 12 teams who made it to regionals/state going 7-5 against those teams.  Denver Christian has not posted stats for the season.  Denver Christian will face #26 Swink in the opening round of regionals.  Swink enters regionals as the #26 seed and 7-13 on the season.  Swink ended the year going 2-4 in their final 6 games but got a pair of big wins to help them get to regionals.  Swink did play a tough schedule playing 16 teams who made it to regionals.  Swink went 4-12 against those teams.  Swink is led by Hunter Bauserman (15.6 ppg) and Nate Cabrera (13.7 ppg).

Wray enters regionals as the #10 seed in the district tournament.  Wray is 13-9 on the season but ended the year strong going 6-2 in their final 8 games.  Wray was runner up in the District 2 tournament.  Wray defeated Caliche 78-47 and Holyoke 66-60 before falling to Merino 47 to 44 in the District Championship.  Wray played 17 of their 22 games against teams who reached regionals/state.  Wray went 9-8 against those teams.  Wray is led by Rafael Trejo (17.0 ppg) and AB Ruiz (13.2 ppg).  Wray will face #23 Elbert to open regional play.  Elbert comes into regionals at 14-6 overall and the #23 seed.  Elbert ended the year strong going 4-2 in their final 6 games.  Elbert did lose in the opening round of the District 8 tournament to Byers 67 to 47.  Elbert played 8 games against regional teams going 2-6 against those teams.  Elbert is led by Logan LaFollette (15.5 ppg) and Eli Cornell (12.3 ppg).

Mancos comes into regionals as the #8 seed and host of region 8.  Mancos currently sits at 17-4 overall and winner of 7 in a row.  Mancos won the District 3 tournament defeating Dolores 71-55 and Telluride 54 to 51.  Mancos played 12 games against teams who made it to regionals going 8-4 against those teams.  Mancos is led by Brian Veach (16.4 ppg) and Kaiden Wyatt (11.6 ppg).  Mancos will open regional play against Sedgwick County.  Sedgwick County comes into regionals as the #25 seed and have a 8-12 record.  Sedgwick County ended the season with a 2-4 record in their final 6 games.  Sedgwick County lost in the opening round of the District 2 tournament to Holyoke 69 to 44.  Sedgwick County played 13 games against teams who reached regionals going 2-11 against those teams. Sedgwick County has not entered stats for the season.

Limon enters regionals as the #9 seed and have a record of 17-5 overall.  Limon ended the year winning 6 of their last 7 games.  Limon finished runner up in the District 8 tournament defeating Dolores Huerta 75 to 45 and Burlington 55 to 37.  Limon did fall in the district championship to Simla 57 to 52.  Limon played 15 out of 22 games against teams who made it to regionals/state.  Limon went 10-5 in those games against regional opponents.  Limon is led by Jordan Rockwell (19.1 ppg) and Treyton Marx (10.3 ppg).  Limon will open regional play against #24 Akron.  Akron comes into regionals at 9-12 overall and the #24 seed.  Akron ended the year going 3-3 in their final 6 games.  Akron reached the semifinals of the district 2 tournament going 1-1.  Akron defeated Wiggins 36 to 32 before falling in the semifinals in OT to Merino 51 to 46.  Akron played 16 of their 21 games against teams who reached regionals going 6-10 against those opponents.  Akron is led by Anderson Filla (13.4 ppg) and Ryan McCaffrey (10.9 ppg).
