Class 1A Football Preview-Week Seven

We will shift to the CHSAA Seeding and Selection Index as we move into the second half of the year.  We are going to pick 8 to 10 of the top games in Class 1A.  This is regardless of rankings we are looking at what games will impact on the playoffs.  Rankings used are the CHSAA Seeding Index.

#2 Burlington (5-0) vs #8 Wray (3-2), Friday at 7pm

Last Week…Burlington improved to 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play with a 32 to 14 win over Yuma.  This games was 8 to 0 at halftime before Burlington added 24 points in the second half.  Offensively it was all rushing for the Cougars as they compiled 359 yards of rushing.  QB Scout Humrich rushed 14 times for 158 yards and 2 TDs while RB Jason Saucedo added another 139 yards.  RB Anthony Estrada also pitched in 58 yards and 2 TDs.  Defensively Burlington held Yuma to 162 yards of total offense.  Anthony Estrada (13 tackles & 1 TFL) and Darian McDonough (7 tackles & 1 TFL) led the Burlington defense. 

Wray improved to 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in league play with a 40 to 8 win over Holyoke.  Wray jumped out to an early 20 to 0 lead after the first quarter then got clock running in the 3rd quarter.  Wray offensively had a monster day racking up 494 yards of total offense.  QB Wyatt Fonte led the passing attack with 130 yards passing and 2 passing TDS.  RB Brody Stults led the rushing attack with 160 yards and 2 TDs and WR Aaron Tena had a huge day with 131 yards rushing, 1 rushing TD, 137 yards receiving and 2 receiving TDs.  Defensively Wray limited a good passing attack to just 115 yards passing.  Wyatt Fonte (8 tackles), Lance Buoy (8 tackles & 2 TFL), and Brodie Riggelman (8 tackles) led the Eagle Defense. 

Last Year…Wray defeated Burlington 49 to 6.

Series history… Burlington & Wray are currently tied at 13-13, since 2004

#5 Forge Christian (5-1) vs #9 Flatirons Academy (3-2), Friday at 7pm

Last Week…Forge Christian improved to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in league play with a 49 to 21 win over Prospect Ridge.  Offensively the Fury had a big day racking up over 400 yards of total offense.  QB Jack Widdifield was nearly perfect, going 9 of 10 for 255 yards and 2 TDs.  WR Treysen Eye was the main target catching 5 passes for 175 yards and 2 TDs.  RB Quentin Torres led the rushing attack with 97 yards and 2 rushing TDs.  Defensively Forge Christian did give up some passing yards but forced Prospect Ridge to be one sided offensively.  Sammy Granillo (6 tackles & 1.5 sacks) and Raleigh Cleveland (6 tackles) led the Forge Christian defense. 

Flatirons Academy dropped to 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in league play with a 42 to 27 loss to Manual.  Offensively Flatirons Academy leaned heavily on the rushing attack with racked up 257 yards of rushing.  RB Zeke Friedman rushed for 131 yards and 1 TD while RB Elijah Ricca rushed for 42 yards and a TD.  QB Caleb Doughty also added to the rushing with 84 yards and 2 TDs and had 55 yards passing and 2 INTs.  Defensively the Bison will look to make improvements after giving up over 400 yards of total offense.  No defensive stats were input for Flatirons Academy.

Last Year…Forge Christian defeated Flatirons Academy 42 to 0.

#7 Yuma (3-2) vs #17 Wiggins (1-4), Friday at 7pm

Last Week… Yuma dropped to 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in league play with a 32 to 14 loss to Burlington.  Yuma has now lost back-to-back games and will be looking to snap that skid.  Offensively Yuma will look to get the offense going this week after only racking up 162 yards of total offense.  QB Iann Duran was the main offensive weapon throwing for 87 yards and 1 TD while rushing for 72 yards and 1 rushing TD.  WR Reyli Trejo was the main target in the passing attack, catching 4 passes for 71 yards and a TD.  RB Christian Thomson & RB Daden Beauprez will look to get going this week.  Defensively the Outlaws will look to improve after giving up over 350 yards of rushing.  Marvin Duarte (11 tackles) and Reyli Trejo (8 tackles) will look to lead the Yuma defense this week.

Wiggins dropped to 1-4 on the season and 0-1 in league play with a 49 to 14 loss to Limon.  Wiggins played one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A.  Offensively Wiggins leaned heavily on the rushing attack racking up 245 yards of rushing.  RB Owen Erker rushed for 110 yards and RB Julien Towers was #2 in rushing with 54 yards.  Defensively Wiggins will look to adjust heading into this week and after giving up over 300 yards of total offense.  Mark Walker (10 tackles) and Michael Adamson (6 tackles) will look to lead the Tigers to the win this week.

Last Year…Wiggins defeated Yuma last year 27 to 6.

Series history… Yuma leads the series 9 to 8 over Wiggins, since 2004.

#3 Limon (4-1) at #23 Holyoke (2-3), Saturday at 2pm

Last Week… Limon improved to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in league play with a 49 to 14 win over Wiggins.  It was a monster second quarter that helped the Badgers get the win, scoring 28 unanswered points.  Offensively Limon had over 300 yards of total offense and 268 yards from the rushing attack.  RB Jacob Jaklich led all rushers with 85 yards while Camdyn Tacha also pitched in with 69 yards and a TD.  QB Brooks Scherrer made his first start at QB and played well throwing for 51 yards and 2 TDs while rushing for 40 yards and 2 rushing TDs.  Defensively Limon limited Wiggins rushing attack.  Liam Yoder (8 tackles, 1 TFL) and Joe White (6 tackles) led the Badgers defense.

Holyoke dropped to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play with a 40 to 8 loss to Wray.  Offensively the Dragons did find some success racking up over 230 yards of total offense.  QB Colby Weber threw for 115 yards and a TD while rushing for 48 yards.  WR Gustavo Goytia was the main target catching 5 passes for 52 yards.  RB Jacob Quintana led the rushing attack with 62 yards.  Defensively Holyoke will look to improve after giving up over 400 yards of total offense.  Look for Jacob Quintana (14 tackles), Esteban Rojas (4 tackles), and Branson Bustillos (4 tackles) to step up.

Last Year…Holyoke defeated Limon 20 to 17.

#14 North Fork (4-2) vs #19 Cedaredge (3-2), Friday at 7pm

Last Week… North Fork improved to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in league play with a 42 to 6 win over Olathe.  Offensively North Fork had a big day racking up over 300 yards of total offense.  QB Braeden Flores was perfect passing going 2 for 2 for 59 yards while rushing for 42 yards and 2 rushing TDs.  RB Alex Csere led all rushers with 97 yards and 1 TD while RB Joe Hollembeak had 70 yards rushing.  Defensively North Fork flew around forcing 1 turnover and 3 sacks (2 by Bo Eves)Joe Hollembeak (6 tackles), Abell Etter (5 tackles), and Bo Eves (5 tackles) led the Miner defense. 

Cedaredge dropped to 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in league play with a 22 to 13 loss to Meeker.  Cedaredge did not score in the 2nd & 3rd Quarter and that proved to be the difference in a 1 score game.  Offensively, Cedaredge had just 102 yards of total offense.  QB Logan Sanders led the passing attack with 52 yards and 1 INT while also leading the rushing attack with 21 yards rushing and 1 rushing TD.  WR Liam Martin was the top target, catching 2 passes for 32 yards.  Look for RB Kolter Mann to get going this week after being limited to 11 yards.  Defensively Cedaredge did not post any stats but did limit Meeker to just 3 scores.

Last Year…North Fork defeated Cedaredge 14 to 0.

Series history… North Fork leads the series 15 to 6 over Cedaredge, since 2004

#10 Rye (5-1) at #21 Ellicott (4-2), Friday at 7pm

Last Week… Rye improved to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in league play with a 14 to 7 win over Peyton.  Rye offensively found success racking up over 275 yards of total offense.  QB Brady Baumgartner continues to play well throwing for 127 yards.  WR Kyran Baker was the top target catching 2 passes for 85 yards.  The rushing attack was led by RB Jackson Bjorum who rushed for 90 yards and a TD.  Defensively Rye held Peyton to just 136 yards of total offense.  Beau Hicks (17 tackles & 2 TFL) and Kyran Baker (10 tackles) led the Thunderbolt defense. 

Ellicott dropped to 4-2 on the season and 0-1 in league play with a 51 to 0 loss to Buena Vista.  Ellicott has dropped back-to-back games and will look to snap the skid.  Ellicott did not put in any stats from the game.  Defensively they did give up over 400 yards of total offense to Buena Vista.

Last Year…Rye defeated Ellicott 21 to 12.

#16 C.S Christian (3-2) at #22 Peyton (3-3), Friday at 7pm

Last Week… C.S Christian improved to 3-2 on the season with a 24 to 6 non-league win over Platte Canyon.  C.S Christian will officially open league play this week.  Offensively C.S Christian had a solid day racking up 297 yards of total offense.  QB Fisher Tenpas threw for 135 yards, 1 INT, and 2 TDs while rushing for 56 yards and a TD.  WR Bram Thompson was the top target catching 2 passes for 66 yards and a TD.  RB Micah Akpata led the rushing attack with 46 yards.  Defensively C.S Christian played well holding Platte Canyon to just 58 yards of total offense.  Christian Banks (10 tackles & 6 TFL) and Matt Hinderland (8 tackles) lead C.S Christian defense. 

Peyton dropped to 3-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play with a 14 to 7 loss to Rye.  Peyton had some success on offense but will look to improve this week after racking up just 136 yards of total offense.  RB Lorenzo Arguello had the most success rushing for 71 yards.  Look for John Finlay-Wagner and Josiah Zimmerman to bounce back this week.  Peyton defensively will look to make a few adjustments and get a huge win.  Josiah Zimmerman (13 tackles & 3 TFL) and Liam Mcinroy (9 tackles) look to lead the Panther defense. 

Last Year…Peyton defeated C.S Christian 13 to 12.

Series history… C.S Christian leads the series over Peyton 8 to 5, since 2004

#11 Manual (3-2) vs #24 Pinnacle (4-2), Friday at 7pm

Last Week…Manual dropped to 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in league play with a 39 to 34 loss to Highland.  Manual tried to rally late in the game scoring 14 unanswered points in the 4th quarter but came up just short in the end.  Manual offensively had a monster day racking up over 400 yards of total offense.  QB Marcus Keller had a big day passing for 280 yards and 4 TDs while rushing for 60 yards and 1 rushing TD.  WR Kearre Watson had a career day catching 13 passes for 194 yards and 3 TDs.  RB Ellis NamuWeusi-Clements led all rushers with 70 yards.  Defensively Manual did play well holding Highland to under 255 yards of total offense.  Kearre Watson (10 tackles), Ellis NamuWeusi-Clements (9 tackles), and Aciano Wilson (9 tackles) led the Manual defense. 

Pinnacle improved to 4-2 on the season with a 38 to 26 win over Jefferson.  Pinnacle is still independent and is not in a league currently.  Pinnacle had a 17-point second quarter that helped them get by Jefferson.  Offensively it was the rushing attack that helped them get the win.  RB AJ Duran rushed for 162 yards and a TD while RB Caleb Arellano pitched in with 56 yards and 1 TD.  QB Yadhir Perez only had 4 passing yards but had 27 rushing yards and 3 rushing TDs.  Defensively Pinnacle will look to improve against the pass this week.  Pinnacle had 7 sacks last week with 3 coming from Omar Terrones-Jara.  Valentino Fuestes (9 tackles) and AJ Duran (8 tackles) led the Pinnacle defense. 

Last Year…Manual defeated Pinnacle 69 to 0.

Series history… Manual leads the series 7 to 2 over Pinnacle, since 2004

#1 Buena Vista (5-0) vs 3A #9 Steamboat Springs (4-1), Saturday at 1pm

Last Week… Buena Vista improved to 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play with a 51 to 0 win over Ellicott.  Buena Vista had a big day offensively racking up over 400 yards of total offense.  QB Hudson Wingo did not have to do much throwing for 78 yards and a TD.  WR Caleb Pierce was the top target catching 2 passes for 55 yards and 2 TDs.  The rushing attack did have a big day racking up 357 yards rushing.  RB Eli Schuknecht led all rushers with 136 yards and 2 TDs and RB Casen Pridemore also pitched in with 98 yards and a TD.  Defensively Buena Vista forced 2 turnovers in the game and pitched the shutout.  Casen Pridemore (8 tackles & 2 TFL) and Abel Flowers (7 tackles & 2 TFL) led the Demon defense.    

Steamboat Springs competes in Class 3A and is currently 4-1 on the season.  They are coming off a 35 to 14 loss to Eagle Valley last week.  On the season Steamboat Springs is a run first offense with over 1500 yards rushing on the season.  RB Thomas Krupp leads all rushers with 693 yards and 7 rushing TDs and RB Eli Bever is #2 in rushing with 411 yards and 4 TDs.  QB Tanner Cobb leads the passing attack with 529 yards, 9 TDs, and 3 INTS while rushing for another 239 yards and 3 TDs.  Defensively Blu Wills (32 tackles) and Lucas Johnson (31 tackles) lead the way for the Steamboat Springs defense. 

Last Year…These two teams did not meet last season.

Series history… Steamboat Springs leads the series 2 to 0 over Buena Vista, since 2004.  They last meet in 2009 with Steamboat Springs winning 58 to 13.
