Week 5 Recap
Mel Smith Wrestling Tournament
A lot can be learned from the results here but always remember it doesn’t always tell the whole story and the ultimate goal is to perform at State not just a big tournament. Keep in mind several teams sent their elite wrestlers to the Doc B in California for this weekend instead.

Alamosa’s depth and dominance defined this tournament, eight placers and three champions turned a strong individual showing into a commanding team title. Fort Morgan and Bennett supplied the most consistent threats, each stacking multiple podium finishes across weight classes and keeping the chase competitive. Standouts like Zach Benson (Gunnison, 25–0), Samuel Johnson (Salida, 23–0), and Samuel Stockton (Resurrection Christian, 15–0) gave the meet its headline moments, while programs such as Valley and La Junta showed balance by placing across both light and heavy divisions. For fans, the story is twofold: Alamosa’s star power and depth earned the crown, but the spread of high‑quality placers across many schools signals a healthy, competitive landscape that will make team races and individual matchups compelling all season.

Rodriguez Tournament of Champions
Pretty cool to see a tournament place out to top 12, definitely gave a lot of wrestlers valuable mat time.

Holy Family set the pace among this group, leaning on freshman standout Tyler McCracken’s title at 113 and a steady stream of mid‑bracket points that kept the Tigers inside the top ten overall. Jefferson wasn’t far behind, powered by Isaiah Gallegos’ runner‑up finish at 150 and a cluster of reliable placers who consistently advanced through the consolations.
Skyview brought the star power with Andrew Pedregon’s championship at 106, and the Wolverines added enough depth in the upper weights to stay firmly in the mix. Fort Lupton didn’t produce a finalist this time, but the Bluedevils showed grit across the board, highlighted by Ezekiel Ortiz’s 5th at 106 and several young wrestlers battling their way onto the podium.

Wellington left no doubt about who controlled this tournament. With five champions and a wave of bonus‑point wins across both varsity and B brackets, the Eagles built a lead early and never let it go.
University showed impressive balance, each stacking finalists and B‑bracket scorers that kept them in the top tier. Fort Morgan all had standout individuals but couldn’t match the lineup-wide consistency of the top teams.
