Class 1A Football Preview-Week Two

We use the MileHigh Prep Report Coaches/Media Poll and go thru the top matchups of Week Two.  The 8 games selected seem to be the big matchups of the Second Week of the Season!

#8 Yuma (1-1) at #2 Burlington (1-0), Friday at 7pm

Last Week…Burlington kicked off their 2026 campaign with a 36 to 14 win over old league rival Wray.  Defensively Burlington had a great game plan holding Wray to just 14 points but also holding them to 76 yards of total offense.  Omar Loza (7 tackles), Jordyn Abernathy (6 tackles), and Jorge Santillan (5 tackles) led the way for the Burlington defense.  Offensively it was the rushing attack that led the way for the Cougars.  Burlington racked up 358 yards of total offense with 297 coming on the ground.  RB Scout Humrich (165 yards & 1 TD) led the Burlington offense with QB Weston Schaal (56 yards rushing & 61 yards passing, 3 Total TDs) proving a second option. 

Yuma got into the win column for the first time last week defeating Chase County NE 30 to 0.  Yuma will hit the road for the first time this season.  Yuma offensively, had a great game racking up 311 yards of total offense powered by the rushing attack.  RB Jorge Ramos (75 yards and 2 TD) led the offensive attack with QB Ty Weathers (70 yards passing, 24 yards rushing) and RB Christian Thomson (48 yards rushing) also contributing.  Defensively, Yuma held Chase County NE to 101 yards of total offense.  Jose Ross and Brodie Kallweit led the defense with 5 tackles a piece.

Last Year…Burlington defeated Yuma 32 to 14.

North Fork (1-0) at #4 Monte Vista (1-0), Friday at 6pm

Last Week…Monte Vista kicked off their 2026 season with a dominating win over Florence 41 to 13.  Monte Vista exploded to 28 points in the second quarter to get running clock going.  Offensively, Monte Vista had success racking up 320 yards of total offense.  QB Manny Jiron had a stellar day passing for 72 yards and rushing for another 84 yards and 2 TDs.  RB Judah Howe (84 yards and 1 TD) and RB Jeremiah McComas (37 yards rushing, 28 yards receiving, 1 TD and a Defensive TD) also scored TDs for Pirate Offense.  Defensively Monte Vista pitched a shutout in the first half before Florence scored in the second half after running clock was already going.  Diego Zamarippa (12 tackles) and Mason Mondragon (11 tackles) led the way for the Pirate defense along with a punt return for a TD by Nehemias Sandoval.

North Fork opened their 2026 season at home with a 25 to 13 win over 2A Aspen.  Defensively North Fork played well limiting Aspen to just 13 points while also forcing a safety, 1 turnover, and 3 sacks.  Tate Carver (9 tackles) and Braden Laiminger (8 tackles) led the Miners on defense.  Offensively, North Fork found success racking up 294 yards of offense led by 214 yards on the ground.  QB Tate Carver (80 yards passing, 56 yards rushing, 2 Total TDs) led the way for North Fork in his first varsity start.  RB Alex Csere (93 yards) and RB Bentley Farmer (64 yards and 1 TD) also had big days for North Fork.

Last Year…North Fork defeated Monte Vista last year 21 to 7.

#1 Limon (2-0) at Wray (0-1), Friday at 6pm

Last Week…Limon improved to 2-0 on the season with a 28 to 14 win over #10 Rye.  Limon is one of the few teams in Class 1A with two games already under their belt.  Limon had a solid day offensively racking up 277 yards of offense with 240 yards coming on the ground.  RB Liam Yoder had a big day on the ground rushing for 125 yards and a TD with RB Camdyn Tacha also contributing another 98 yards and 2 TDs.  Defensively, Limon did give up some yards but were able to limit Rye to just 14 points.  Limon did have four sacks and 2 turnovers in the game.  Roberto Sontay (8 Tackles), Nelson Sontay (7 tackles), and Ben Carr (7 tackles) led the Badger defense.

Wray kicked off their 2026 season with a tough loss to #2 Burlington 36 to 14.  Offensively, Wray struggled to get going, racking up just 76 yards of total offense.  QB Grady Godsey did find some success offensively throwing for 30 yards and rushing for another 20 yards.  RB Eric Lords did find the endzone offensively for the Eagles.  Defensively Wray hopes to build on the success they had last week.  Benjamin Riggleman (10 tackles), Noah Stults (9 tackles), and Adan Aguilar (7 tackles) led the way for the Eagles defense. 

Last Year…Limon defeated Wray twice last season, 28 to 7 (regular season) and 42 to 21 (playoffs).

#10 Rye (0-1) at Cedaredge (1-0), Saturday at 1pm (at Gunnison HS)

Last Week… Rye got their season going against the #1 team in Class 1A falling to Limon 28 to 14.  Rye had some success offensively racking up 244 yards of total offense.  RB Jackson Bjorum led the Rye offense with 141 yards and 2 TDs.  QB Brady Baumgartner (84 yards and 1 INT) and WR Wyatt Scheid (48 yards) also contributed to the Thunderbolt offense.  Defensively, Rye did give up over 275 yards of offense, and they will look to improve on that this week.  Rye did force a trio of turnovers (2 INTs & 1 Fumble recovery).  Nathaniel Gray (10 tackles) and Sean McConnell (5 tackles) led the way for the Rye defense.

Cedaredge kicked off their 2026 season in a wacky fashion playing the first half on Friday Night before things were postponed will Saturday.  Regardless, Cedaredge was victorious in the game over Montezuma-Cortez 47 to 6.  It was a big day for the Bruins offense racking up 388 yards of total offense.  QB Logan Sanders led the passing attack with 164 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT while also rushing for another 88 yards and 4 TDs.  RB Alyx Mann (60 yards rushing) and WR Dane Brown (74 yards receiving and 1 TD) also contributed to the offensive attack.  Defensively, Cedaredge limited the offensive attack of Montezuma-Cortez plus forced, 1 sack and 2 turnovers in the game.  Shane Smothers (7 tackles), Alyx Mann (5 tackles), and Logan Sanders (5 tackles) led the Cedaredge defense.

Last Year…These Two Teams did not play each other last year.

#6 C.S Christian (1-0) at 2A Woodland Park (1-1), Friday at 7pm

Last Week…C.S Christian kicked off their 2026 campaign with a 49 to 14 win over Holyoke.  C.S Christian had a massive day offensively racking up 469 yards of total offense.  The passing attack was led by QB Fisher Tenpas who threw for 309 yards and 4 TDs.  Tenpas top target was WR Silas Lambert who caught 4 passes for 129 yards and 2 TDs.  The rushing attack was led by RB Liam Smith who rushed for 95 yards and 2 TDs.  Defensively, C.S Christian had a solid game plan holding Holyoke to just 93 yards of total offense.  Matt Hinderland (7 tackles) and Nate Aichele (4 tackles) led the Lions defense to the win.

Woodland Park improved to 1-1 on the season following a insane comeback win over Palmer 27 to 14.  Woodland Park will look to build on that comeback win and try and pick off a top 10 team.  Offensively, Woodland Park had success racking up 322 yards of total offense.  QB Bryce Bischoff led the way for the Panther offense with 105 yards passing, 141 yards rushing, and 3 Total TDs.  RB Saie Soto (60 yards) and WR Alexander Stotts (83 yards 1 TD) also contributed to the offensive attack.  Defensively, Woodland Park was able to hold Palmer to just 14 points while forcing 4 sacks and 2 turnovers.  Bryce Bischoff (11 tackles) and Zach Summeril (9 tackles) led the way for Woodland Park.

Last Year…C.S Christian defeated Woodland Park, 41 to 8 last year.

Highland (1-0) at Bennett (1-0), Friday at 7pm

Last Week…Highland kicked off their 2026 season in excited fashion last week defeating Byers 20 to 19 in OT.  Highland had to come from behind to snag the win in OT.  Highland offensively found success racking up 250 yards of total offense.  QB Jason Batka had a breakout performance passing for 138 yards and rushing for 46 yards in the win.  RB Robert Olson (52 yards) and WR Logan Burch (82 yards) also had success in the win.  There was no defensive stats for Highland entered.  They did give up 245 yards of total offense.

Bennett kicked off the 2026 season with a win over 3A Mitchell 48 to 6.  Bennett did not win a game last season so getting off to 1-0 is a good start.  Offensively, Bennett had their way on the ground rushing for 200 yards.  Kenny Jordan (93 yards & 2 TDs), Avant Dickens (40 yards & 1 TD), and Quint Copeland (26 yards & 1 TD) all powered the Bennett offensive attack.  Defensively, Bennett had a solid day forcing 8.5 sacks, 2 turnovers, and 1 defensive TD.  Gabriel Herrera (4 tackles) and Mormon Jordan (4 tackles) led the Bennett defense.

Byers (0-1) at Flatirons Academy (1-0), Friday at 6:30pm

Last Week…Flatirons Academy moved to 1-0 on the season following a 42 to 6 win over Dayspring Christian.  Flatirons Academy had a solid day defensively forcing 4.5 sacks, 2 turnovers, and scoring 1 defensive TD.  Isaiah Figueroa (12 tackles) had a breakout performance defensively along with Micah McGuin (9 tackles).  Offensively, Flatirons Academy had success racking up 254 yards of total offense.  QB Caleb Doughty led the offensive attack with 25 yards passing, 89 yards rushing and 1 TD.  RB Zeke Friedman (70 yards and 3 TDs) and RB Joel Costello (70 yards and 1 TD) also had big days for the Bison.

Byers dropped to 0-1 on the season following a 20 to 19 OT loss to Highland.  Byers played their first 11-man game in a few years.  Byers will hope to gain valuable knowledge after that game.  Offensively, Byers did find success racking up 245 yards of total offense.  QB James Maes led the passing attack with 150 yards, 3 TDs, and 1 INT.  RB Gabe Price (96 yards) and WR Conrad Cichos (41 yards and 1 TD) also contributed to the offensive attack.  Defensively Byers will look to improve heading into week 2.  Gabe Price (13 tackles) and Eli Cary (13 tackles) led the Bulldog defense.

Last Year…These two teams did not play each other last year.

Series history… Flatirons Academy leads the series with Byers 2 to 0, since 2004

2A Gunnison (2-0) at Olathe (1-0), Friday at 7pm

Last Week…Olathe got their 2026 season going with a 21 to 7 win over Peyton.  Olathe did not input stats from the game but had a solid opening performance.  Defensively Olathe held Peyton to just 87 yards of total offense.

Gunnison improved to 2-0 on the season with a 40 to 0 win over Grand Valley.  Gunnison has now posted back-to-back shutouts to open the season.  This will be their best test of the 2026 season.  Offensively, Gunnison had a solid day racking up 252 yards of total offense.  QB Asher Woytek led the offensive attack with 89 yards passing and 3 TDs while receiving other contributions for RB Jakob Miller (48 yards and 1 TD) and WR Jorge Perez (68 yards and 2 TDs).  Defensively, Gunnison held Grand Valley to just 64 yards of total offense.  Nolan Witzel (7 tackles) and Simeon Jauregui (7 tackles) led the Cowboy defense.
