Class 1A Football Preview-Week Three
We use the MileHigh Prep Report Coaches/Media Poll and go thru the top matchups of Week One. The 7 games selected seem to be the big matchups of the Third Week of the Season, and final week before we kick off League Play!
#4 Centauri (1-1) at #7 North Fork (2-0), Saturday at 1pm
Last Week…Centauri dropped their first game of the season to 2A Ranked La Junta 24 to 22. The game came down to a two-point conversion for Centauri, and they were stopped on the goal line and La Junta grabbed the win. Centauri had a solid offensive attack racking up 254 yards of total offense. QB Grayson Hunzeker led the offensive attack with 137 yards passing, 36 yards rushing, and 3 Total TDs. WR Dallyn King was the top target with 47 yards receiving and another 41 yards rushing and 1 TD. RB Caden Ruggles also contributed with 42 yards rushing. Defensively Centauri did play well holding La Junta to just 258 yards of total offense. No other stats have been posted.
North Fork improved to 2-0 on the season getting a 19 to 13 win in OT over Monte Vista. North Fork offensively found some success racking up 208 yards of offense and taking advantage of the short field when they had it. QB Tate Carver again led the offense with 31 yards passing, 72 yards rushing and 1 TD. RB Alex Csere also contributed offensively with 62 yards rushing and 1 TD. Defensively North Fork won the turnover battle 2 to 1 and that proved to be the difference. Branson Hall (20 tackles), Tate Carver (11 tackles), and Payson Miller (9 tackles) led the way for the North Fork defense.
Last Year…Centauri defeated North Fork last year in the first round of the playoffs 35 to 21.

#5 C.S Christian (2-0) at #9 Rye (1-1), Friday at 7pm
Last Week…C.S Christian improved to 2-0 on the season following a 22 to 16 win over 2A Woodland Park. C.S Christian trailed early in the game but scored 22 unanswered points to snag the win. Offensively the passing attack led the way with QB Fisher Tenpas having another great day throwing for 206 yards, 3 TDs, and 0 INTS. WR Dom Gillin was the top target catching 4 passes for 125 yards and 2 TDs. RB Liam Smith led the rushing attack with 81 yards. Defensively, C.S Christian limited Woodland Park to 215 yards of total offense and forced 1 turnover in the win. Matt Hinderland (16 tackles) and Liam Smith (12 tackles) led the way for the Lions defense.
Rye picked up their first win of the season getting a 28 to 27 win in OT over Cedaredge. Rye was able to convert a long pass play and then hit a PAT to get the win in OT. Rye had a big offensive day racking up 381 yards of total offense. QB Brady Baumgartner had a big day passing throwing for 197 yards and 2 TD while rushing for another TD. WR Chase Daniel had a big day catching the ball catching 2 passes for 73 yards and 2 TDs. The rushing attack was led by Jackson Bjorum who rushed for 136 yards and 1 TD. Defensively, Rye limited Cedaredge to 283 yards of total offense. Nathaniel Gray (9 tackles) and Sean McConnell (6 tackles) led the Thunderbolt defense.
Last Year…C.S Christian defeated Rye 27 to 0.

Flatirons Academy (2-0) at #10 Wiggins (1-1), Friday at 7pm
Last Week…Wiggins picked up their first win of the season capturing a 14 to 13 win over 2A Strasburg. Wiggins got the final score of the game and a two-point conversion to seal the win. Wiggins did not play last week and had an extra week of preparation. So far on the season Wiggins has been led by their passing attack. QB Isaac Flores has 244 yards passing, 2 TDs, and 3 INTs on the season with his top target being WR Julien Towers who has 9 catches for 94 yards. The rushing attack has racked up 140 yards with RB Owen Erker being the top rusher with 99 yards. Defensively, Wiggins has forced 2 sacks and 4 turnovers on the year. Cyrus Barkdoll (22 tackles) and Ryken Wadley (16 tackles) lead the way for the Wiggins Tigers defense.
Flatirons Academy improved to 2-0 on the season picking up a 51 to 6 win over Byers. Flatirons Academy used a big 21-point first quarter to capture a big lead and never look back. Defensively Flatirons Academy played well holding Byers to just 85 yards of total offense. Flatirons Academy forced 5 total turnovers in the game. Isaiah Figueroa (9 tackles) and Micah McGuin (8 tackles) led the Bison defense. Offensively, Flatirons Academy racked up 266 yards of total offense. QB Caleb Doughty led the offense with 95 yards passing, 40 yards rushing and 2 TDs and his top target was WR Jack Joyner who had 4 catches for 52 yards. The rushing attack had a solid day racking up 171 yards and 4 TDs and was led by RB Zeke Friedman who rushed for 33 yards and 2 TDs.
Last Year…These two teams did not play last year, their last meeting was in 2021 with Wiggins winning 41 to 7.

Denver Christian (2-0) at Highland (2-0), Friday at 7pm
Last Week… Denver Christian improved to 2-0 on the season with a dominate 42 to 0 win over 3A Kent Denver. Denver Christian had a slow start but scored 14 points in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters. Offensively, it was the rushing attack that led the way for Denver Christian racking up 401 yards and 6 TDs. RB Quin Barkema led the offensive attack with 17 carries for 112 yards and 4 TDs. RB Daniel Copeland (68 yards rushing) and RB Pete Smith (52 yards rushing) also contributed to the offensive attack. Defensively Denver Christian forced the shutout along with 2 sacks and 1 turnover. Camden Epperhart (6 tackles) and Tobin Delle Donne (4 tackles) led the way for the Denver Christian defense.
Highland improved to 2-0 on the season capturing their second close win of the season over Bennett 7 to 3. Highland trailed the whole game but scored the final TD of the game to snag the win. Offensively, Highland did not have much going racking up just 133 yards of total offense. RB Robert Olson led the offensive attack with 59 yards. QB Jason Batka also threw for 35 yards and rushed for another 10 yards. Highland did not post any defensive stats but did limit Bennett to just 3 points and 177 yards of total offense.
Last Year…Highland defeated Denver Christian 53 to 13.

#8 Monte Vista (1-1) at Cedaredge (1-1), Friday at 7pm
Last Week…Monte Vista picked up their first loss of the season falling in OT to North Fork 19 to 13. Monte Vista did not score in OT and that allowed North Fork to get the score in OT to get the win. Offensively, Monte Vista did find success racking up 259 yards of total offense. RB Judah Howe led the offensive attack with 111 yards and 1 TD and RB Nehemias Sandoval also contributed with 48 yards rushing. QB Manny Jiron was also solid for the Pirate offense throwing for 46 yards and rushing for 42 yards and 1 Total TD. Turnovers was the difference in the game with Monte Vista losing the turnover battle 2-1. Defensively, Monte Vista limited North Fork to 208 yards, 2 sacks, and 1 turnover. Mason Mondragon (15 tackles) and Diego Zamarippa (12 tackles) led the Pirate Defense.
Cedaredge dropped to 1-1 on the season also falling in OT to Rye 28 to 27. An PAT was the difference in the game with Cedaredge missing their PAT and Rye hitting their to grab the win. Offensively, Cedaredge did find success racking up 283 yards of total offense. QB Logan Sanders led the way for the offense, throwing for 207 yards and 4 TDs. WR Dane Brown was the top target catching 6 passes for 122 yards and 2 TDs. RB Makai Salazar led the rushing attack with 58 yards. Defensively, Cedaredge did give up 381 yards but limited Rye scoring opportunities. Alyx Mann (11 tackles) and Logan Sanders (10 tackles) led the Cedaredge defense.
Last Year…These two teams did not play each other last year and last meet in 2021 with Monte Vista getting a 32 to 6 win.

#3 Meeker (1-1) at Coal Ridge (1-1), Friday at 7pm
Last Week…Meeker is currently 1-1 on the season and are coming off a bye week. Meeker last game was a 29 to 22 loss to 2A Delta. Meeker currently on the season is being powered by their rushing attack which has racked up 429 yards and 5 TDs. RB Said Rodriguez currently lead the rushing attack with 125 yards and 2 TDs and RB Jonah Lee also contributed with 102 yards and 2 TDs. QB Cade Mills leads the passing attack with 156 yards, 1 TD, and 2 INTs while rushing for 85 yards. Defensively, Meeker has forced 3 turnovers on the year. Wesley Thompson (22 tackles) and Jonah Lee (17 tackles) lead the Cowboy Defense.
Coal Ridge improved to 1-1 on the season with a 40 to 34 win in OT over 3A Steamboat Springs. Coal Ridge stopped Steamboat Springs in OT and scored on their first offensive play in OT to snag the win. Offensively, Coal Ridge had a big day racking up 495 yards of total offense. QB Clayton Epp led the way offensively with 149 yards passing, 189 yards rushing, and 3 Total TDs. RB Jayden Emery also contributed big with 157 yards rushing, 93 yards receiving, and 4 Total TDs. Defensively, Coal Ridge did give up 363 yards of total offense but made the big stand in OT to help get the win. No defensive stats were put in for Coal Ridge.
Last Year…These two teams did not play last year, they last meet in 2019 with Meeker winning 40 to 8.

Wray (0-2) at Buena Vista (1-1), Saturday at 1pm
Last Week…Wray dropped to 0-2 on the season following a 43-0 loss to #1 Limon. Wray has currently faced the #1 and #2 teams in Class 1A and should help them get better as the season progresses. Offensively, Wray did struggle to get much going racking up just 81 yards of total offense. This week look for players like QB Kace Chamberlain, RB Eric Lords, and RB Cameron Meisner to step up and lead the offensive attack. Defensively, Wray did hold Limon to under 350 yards of total offense. Noah Stults (8 tackles) and Ian Vasquez (7 tackles) led the Eagles Defense.
Buena Vista improved to 1-1 on the season, picking up their first win of the season over Salida 28 to 7. Buena Vista had a big day offensively racking up 321 yards of total offense. RB Joe Bearss led the offensive attack with 125 yards rushing and 1 TD and RB Casen Pridemore also contributed with 122 yards and 2 TDs. Defensively, Buena Vista nearly pulled the shutout. Gavin Erchul (6 tackles) and Daniel Young (6 tackles) led the Demon Defense.
Last Year…These two teams did not play each other last year, and last meet in 2024 with Wray getting the 52 to 15 win.
Series history… Wray and Buena Vista are tied at 1-1, since 2004
