SIX-MAN FOOTBALL REPORT – WEEK THREE

After a bit of a tumultuous week two, the MHPR Coaches/Media poll saw some shake-up this week. Only one team maintained its position (Idalia) from last week, and two new teams cracked the top-10. Nine of the ten will be in action, including one match-up pitting two against each other.

FRIDAY

#1IDALIA (3-0) AT DEER TRAIL (0-3)

In last week’s #1 vs #2 match-up Idalia gave up a touchdown to Peetz on the third play of the game before scoring 39 unanswered to seize control. The Wolves went on to take a 65-28 win. Gabe Kechter ran for 237 yards and three touchdowns, while Broderick Kite threw for two scores and ran for two more. Jace Morris also ran for two and had one receiving. Kolby Morris threw for one and caught another. Kite topped the defense with 11 tackles and an interception. Deer Trail stepped up on short notice to face #10 Cheraw last Saturday and fell by a 60-32 score. Chris Manriquez-Bustamante led the Eagles with 255 yards and four touchdowns through the air, and 49 yards plus a TD on the ground. Hunter Meredith and Osiris Aldana each caught two TD passes. Aldana had six grabs for 159 yards. Meredith tallied 16 tackles (two sacks) to lead the defense. Idalia owns a 6-1 edge in the series during the MaxPreps era, but the programs have not played since 2017.

#2 FLEMING (3-0) AT KIOWA (0-2)

Fleming had to deal with a weather delay last Saturday, but the Wildcats provided plenty of thunder and lightning of their own in the 62-20 win at Caliche. They racked up 450 yards and six touchdowns on the ground, with Dylon Monroe going for 196 and five, and Conner Marchant adding 145 and a TD. Treyson Kirkwood tossed three TD passes, two to Evan Williamson, and the other to D. Monroe. Marchant (16) and D. Monroe (10) led the Wildcats in tackles. Kiowa had trouble getting much of anything going in its 48-6 loss at #5 Otis, as the Indians turned the ball over three times on interceptions in the sportsmanship clock loss. This will be the first meeting between Fleming and Kiowa in the MaxPreps era.

#4 PEETZ (1-1) VS POTTER-DIX, NE (1-1)

Peetz couldn’t get its running game going against Idalia last week, but the Bulldogs did find something in its passing attack. Bryson Leach tallied 115 yards and three scores, and also snagged a TD pass from Dylan Wagner, who finished with 100 yards through the air. Tanner Wood caught five passes for 60 yards and two touchdowns, and Jason White also had a TD catch. Wagner was everywhere on defense, racking up 20 tackles, and Parker Reker added 15. Potter-Dix put up more than 400 yards of offense against Arthur County (NE), but the Coyotes allowed more than 450 in the 60-32 loss. Callen McConnell ran for 162 yards and a TD, and also threw for two more touchdowns. Lucas Tabor recorded a forced fumble, fumble recovery, and a kick return for a touchdown. This is the third straight year Peetz and Potter-Dix will play. The Coyotes won 18-13 two years ago, and Peetz got a 47-20 win last season.

#5 OTIS (2-0) AT GENOA-HUGO/KARVAL (0-3)

Cambric Klinzmann had another big night for Otis in its 48-6 win over Kiowa last week, as he recorded 122 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, and also a team-leading six tackles. Raegan Torres ran for a one score and threw for another, and also picked off two passes. Aiden Horinek added an interception and a safety. Genoa-Hugo/Karval put up some good numbers last week, but special teams allowed two touchdowns on kick returns in a 51-34 loss to Briggsdale. Ryker Lockhart threw for 137 yards and three touchdowns, two to Tayler Thelen, and the Pirates got triple digits on the ground from Lockhart (103) and Cash Stone (104). Stone ran for two scores, and Clint Hale caught one. Otis has won the last eight meetings in the series, including a 68-12 decision last year.

#6 PRAIRIE (2-0) AT BRIGGSDALE (1-1)

Prairie had its offense rolling last Friday against Flagler, as the Mustangs put up more than 400 yards in the 76-30 victory. Liam Bringelson had 117 yards and one touchdown passing, and a TD reception, while Derek Dollerschell ran for 143 yards and three scores. Dollerschell also threw for two touchdowns, and caught another. Tatum Bailey chipped in a TD run and a TD catch. Defensively, the Mustangs got 11 tackles (two sacks) from Wyatt Walker, and two picks apiece from Dollerschell and Owen Kilmer. One of Kilmer’s was a pick-six. Sering Pino reached the end zone five times in Briggsdale’s 51-34 win over Genoa-Hugo/Karval, twice on kick returns, twice on runs, and once on a reception. Koyen Gebauer also had two rushing touchdowns, and Kaden Sanders had two passing. Theisen Tolbert led the defense with 18 tackles. Prairie owns a slim 12-9 advantage in the series dating back to 2004. The Mustangs have won the last two (51-13 last year) and seven of the last nine.

#7 GRANADA (1-1) AT MANZANOLA (1-0)

Granada crossed state lines last week, taking its show on the road to face Ingalls (KS), who was playing its season-opener The Bobcats ran into a senior-heavy squad and dropped the contest by a 48-12 count. Alejandro Perez and Fernando Cadena had a TD pass apiece, with each going to Angelo Martinez. Perez and Cadena also led the defense with eight tackles apiece, and Sebastian Pizarro tacked on an interception. Manzanola got a wild 52-49 win over Primero last week, as the Bobcats were outscored 19-6 in the fourth, but held on for the victory. The ground attack was key in the win, with the team piling up 346 yards in that phase. Jimmy James accounted for 169 of those, and he scored three times. Danner Carroll added 94 and two touchdowns, and Christian Vigil tallied 79 yards and three touchdowns. James paced the defense with 13 tackles (one sack) and an interception, and Vigil forced and recovered a fumble. These two sets of Bobcats have not played since 2020, but Granada won all four prior meetings. Three of those were in six-man.

#8 WILEY (2-0) VS ANTONITO (0-1)

This was originally scheduled to be Wiley and Eads, but injuries and low numbers led to Eads having to bow out. The Eagles would cancel the remainder of their season shortly thereafter. Wiley is coming off a 52-14 win at La Veta in which the Panthers led 52-6 at the half. Wiley’s defense only allowed 131 yards from scrimmage in the victory. Antonito had last week off after suffering a 55-7 loss to Cheraw two weeks ago. The Trojans trailed 42-0 at halftime in that contest. Cheraw scored on six of its 12 offensive plays, and the Trojans also gave up two return touchdowns. Offensively, they turned it over five times, four on fumbles. This will be the first meeting between Wiley and Antonito in the MaxPreps era.

SATURDAY

#3 CHEYENNE WELLS (1-1) VS #9 WALSH (1-1)

Cheyenne Wells comes off its bye week following its 40-34 loss to Fleming two weeks ago. The Tigers gave up close to 300 rushing yards in that loss. They also allowed a kick return for a score, and they turned it over twice. Trevin Smith ran for 176 yards and three scores, and he also returned a kick for a TD, while Marcus Bogenhagen had a TD pass to Kelby Leonard. Leonard topped the defense with 22 tackles. Walsh got into the win column with a 44-27 victory at Branson/Kim last week. The Eagles led 31-7 at the half. Woodrow Wright and Grady Mundell combined for 253 yards and five touchdowns through the air, with Jackson Foster being their favorite target. Foster caught six passes for 138 yards and three touchdowns. Mundell added 208 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. Wright led the defense with 16 tackles, and Mundell was right behind him with 15. Cheyenne Wells has won all 10 meetings with Walsh with both teams in six-man. That includes a 63-12 victory last year by the Tigers.
