Class 1A Football Preview-Week Four

We use the MileHigh Prep Report Coaches/Media Poll and go thru the top matchups of Week One.  The 7 games selected seem to be the big matchups of the Fourth Week of the Season, and we kick off league play this week for many teams!

#9 Wiggins (2-1) at Holyoke (2-1), Friday at 7pm (Big Northern League)

Last Week…Wiggins picked up their second win of the season with an important 39 to 27 win over Flatirons Academy.  Wiggins was impressive offensively racking up 442 yards of total offense with 405 yards coming on the ground.  RB Owen Erker had a career day with 197 yards rushing and 3 rushing TDs and RB Cyrus Barkdoll also pitched in with another 141 yards and 2 TDs.  QB Isaac Flores also contributed offensively throwing for 37 yards and rushing for another 61 yards.  Defensively, Wiggins limited the offensive attack of Flatirons Academy forcing 1 turnover, 3 sacks, and 14 TFL in the game.  Redd Linton (11 tackles) and Aden Mayer (11 tackles) were a pair of standouts from the game.

Holyoke improved to 2-1 on the season following a 21 to 20 win over Byers last week.  The offensive stats for Holyoke are a bit off but we do know that RB Jacob Quintana rushed for a TD and had a receiving TD along with TE Elbin Padilla catching 1 TD.  QB Dathyn Dirks threw both TDs in the game.  Defensively, Holyoke kept Byers to under 200 yards of total offense along with forcing 4 sacks, 3 TFL, and a blocked punt.  Riley Powell (6 tackles) and Traysen Rosane (6 tackles) led the Holyoke defense.

#6 Platte Valley (3-0) at Yuma (1-2), Friday at 7pm (Big Northern League)

Last Week…Platte Valley improved to 3-0 on the season with a 47 to 6 win over 2A Sterling.  This is the third straight game where Platte Valley has broken the 40-point mark.  Platte Valley has not input stats for this last game.  On the season Platte Valley is led by their rushing attack which has racked up 497 yards and 6 TDs.  RB Logan Vannest (166 yards) and RB Mason Hunt (164 yards) lead the rushing attack.  QB Jackson Gentry powers the passing attack with 207 yards passing, 5 TDs, and 0 INTs.  Defensively Logan Vannest (20 tackles) and Jason Harrison (17 tackles) led the Broncos defense.

Yuma currently sits at 1-2 on the season and are coming off a bye week.  Yuma has played a tough schedule so far facing two ranked opponents in Meeker and Burlington and 1 out of state opponent.  Yuma is hoping to capture their first key win of the season.  Offensively, we have seen a pair of QBs for Yuma in QB Ty Weathers (206 yards) and QB Iann Duran (114 yards).  The rushing attack has also been led by a pair of backs in RB Christian Thomson (167 yards) and RB Jorge Ramos (145 yards).  Look for the defense to improve after giving up over 500 yards in there last game.  Brodie Kallweit (23 tackles) and Jesus Gordo (19 tackles) look to lead the defense.

Last Year…Did not play each other last year and last meet in 2007 with Platte Valley winning 22-0.

Cedaredge (1-2) at #2 Meeker (2-1), Thursday at 6pm (Western Slope League)

Last Week…Meeker improved to 2-1 on the season following a 41 to 20 win over 2A Coal Ridge.  Meeker had a solid day offensively racking up 350 yards of total offense.  The rushing attack led the way with 325 yards and 4 TDs.  RB Said Rodriguez powered the rushing attack with 146 yards and 3 TDs and RB Tucker Chinn also contributed with 95 yards and 1 TD.  QB Cade Mills was also a contributor offensively throwing 25 yards and 1 TD.  Defensively, Meeker flew around forcing 2 turnovers, 9 sacks (3 by Liam Thomson), and 13 TFL.  Trent Sanders (9 tackles) and Wesley Thompson (8 tackles) led the Cowboy defense.

Cedaredge dropped their second consecutive game by falling to Monte Vista 32 to 7.  Offensively, Cedaredge struggled to get much going racking up just 158 yards of total offense.  QB Logan Sanders led the offense with 64 yards passing, 1 TD, 1 INT and 67 yards rushing.  This week also look for WR Dane Brown and Makai Salazar to try and break out.  Defensively, Cedaredge did play well at times but lost the turnover battle.  Cole Wyatt (11 tackles) and Jose Alejandre (8 tackles) led the Cedaredge defense.

Pinnacle (2-0) at #10 Denver Christian (3-0), Friday at 6pm (Metro League)

Last Week… Denver Christian improved to 3-0 on the season with a 36 to 13 win over Highland.  Denver Christian is off to their best in some years and is ranked this week.  Offensively, it was a 22-point fourth quarter that led to the Thunder win.  Denver Christian had over 300 yards of total offense with the rushing attack leading the way.  QB Cole McCabe led the offense with 21 yards passing, 86 yards rushing, and 1 TD.  RB Elijah Whitfield (86 yards) and RB Quinn Barkema (67 yards) also contributed offensively.  Defensively, Denver Christian held Highland to under 170 yards of total offense including 4 sacks and 3 turnovers.  Mason Priebe (7 tackles) and Daniel Copeland (7 tackles) lead the Thunder defense.

Pinnacle improved to 2-0 on the season following a 58 to 0 win over 3A Mitchell.  Pinnacle leaned heavy on the rushing attack racking up 309 yards and 7 TDs.  RB AJ Duran again led the offensive attack with 146 yards and 3 TDs.  QB Ezequiel Ibarra (91 yards rushing) and RB Omar Terrones-Jara (35 yards) also contributed to the offensive attack.  Defensively, Pinnacle pitched the shutout while forcing 2 turnovers, 3 sacks, and 21 TFL.  Valentino Fuentes (10 tackles) and Julian Gil (8 tackles) led the Pinnacle defense.

Last Year…Did not face each other last year, last meeting was in 2023 with Denver Christian winning 62-0.

Moffat County (0-3) at Olathe (3-0), Friday at 7pm (Western Slope League)

Last Week…Olathe improved to 3-0 on the season with a 51 to 22 win over 2A Bayfield.  This is one of the better starts in a while for Olathe.  It was a 31-point first half that led to the big lead over Bayfield.  Offensively, it was a big day for the Pirates who racked up over 400 yards of total offense.  The rushing attack led the way with 379 yards and led by RB Hunter Lynch who rushed for 82 yards and 1 TD.  QB Bridger Vincent had a career day running the ball as well rushing for 167 yards and 3 TDs while also throwing for 66 yards and 1 TD.  WR Colton Snell was the top target of the passing attack catching 2 passes for 61 yards and 1 TD.  No defensive stats were input for Olathe.

Moffat County dropped to 0-3 on the season following a 17-0 loss to Ben Lomond UT.  Moffat County has played a tough schedule so far and has not faced a 1A opponent picking up loses to 3A Steamboat Springs, 3A Berthoud, and of course an out-of-state opponent.  On the season Moffat County has been balanced in their offensive attack.  QB Owen Hill leads the offensive attack with 197 yards passing, 1 TD, 1 INT while rushing for 96 yards and 1 TD.  RB Curtis Kuberry (57 yards) and WR Gavin Zulian (113 yards) also contribute offensively.  Defensively, Moffat County has only forced 1 turnover on the season while also forcing 4 sacks and 22 TFL.  Weston Swaro (30 tackles) and Jose Silva (23 tackles) lead the Moffat County defense.

Last Year…These two teams did not play each other last year.

Buena Vista (2-1) at Trinidad (1-2), Saturday at 1pm (Southern League)

Last Week…Buena Vista improved to 2-1 on the season following a 32 to 21 win over Wray.  A 14-point fourth quarter proved to be the difference and help Buena Vista pick up an important non-league win.  Offensively, it was the passing attack that led the way for the Demons.  QB Casen Pridemore led the way with 280 yards, 5 TDs, and 1 INT.  RB/WR Joe Bearss was the top target of the passing attack catching 5 passes for 165 yards and 3 TDs and WR Jesse Arnold also contributed with 3 catches for 89 yards and 2 TDs.  Defensively, Buena Vista forced 4 turnovers in the game to swing the tide.  Casen Pridemore (13 tackles) and Skyler Tucker (5 tackles) led the Demon defense.

Trinidad dropped its second consecutive game of the year falling to Peyton 34 to 14.  Trinidad is looking to snap the streak in this game.  On the season it’s the rushing attack leading the way for Trinidad with 456 yards and 5 TDs.  RB Cisco Sandoval leads all RBs with 172 yards and 3 TDs.  QB Isaiah Moreno leads the offense in general with 276 yards passing, 2 TDs, 4 INTs while rushing for 198 yards and 2 TDs.  WR Jose Padilla is the top target in the passing attack with 7 catches for 140 yards and 1 TD.  Defensively, Trinidad has forced 3 sacks and 14 turnovers on the season.  Jose Padilla (21 tackles) and Andrew East (18 tackles) lead the Miner defense.

Last Year…These two teams did not play last year, they last meet in 2005 with Buena Vista winning 34 to 0.

2A Middle Park (2-1) at Platte Canyon (3-0), Saturday at 1pm (Front Range League)

Last Week…Platte Canyon improved to 3-0 on the season following a 44 to 6 win over Grand Valley last week.  Platte Canyon has been a run heavy team on the season and kept it going last week rushing for 364 yards and 5 TDs.  RB Colton Shirley (147 yards) and RB Weston Kool (143 yards) once again powered the rushing attack.  Defensively, Platte Canyon limited Grand Valley to just 26 yards of total offense and forced 2 turnovers, 2 sacks, and 9 TFL.  Weston Kool (11 tackles) and Rozyn Rohman (5 tackles) led the Husky defense.

Middle Park improved to 2-1 on the season following a 36-0 win over Sheridan.  On the season it’s the rushing attack that has powered Middle Park racking up 362 yards and 6 TDs on the season.  RB Isidro Molina leads the rushing attack with 160 yards and 3 TDs and RB Zac Boeckers also has contributed with 110 yards and 3 TDs.  QB Finn Mullane leads the passing attack with 155 yards.  Gunnar Daley-Gould (24 tackles) and Liam Gray (16 tackles) lead the Middle Park defense.

Last Year…These two teams did not play each other last year, and last meet in 2023 with Platte Canyon getting the 46-6 win.

Series history… Platte Canyon and Middle Park are tied at 4-4, since 2004
