SIX-MAN FOOTBALL REPORT – WEEK EIGHT

BY: KERRY SHERMAN

Not a week has gone by without some major shake-up in the CHSAA rankings, and that was again the case at the beginning of this week. Idalia regained the top spot from Prairie, and just about every other position in the top-10 also switched hands. There is a good chance the standings will see even more upheaval with two showdowns of top-10 teams on the schedule this weekend.

FRIDAY

#1 IDALIA (7-0) VS #7 OTIS (5-1)

Idalia got a big game from Broderick Kite in the passing attack, as the junior went 8-8 for 93 yards and six touchdowns in a 70-8 win over #14 Bethune last week. Seven different Wolves caught a TD pass, including Beckett Kite, who also threw one. Logan Drullinger caught one and ran for another. Kolby Morris intercepted three passes, and Bode Monahan forced a pair of fumbles. Otis was on its bye following a 61-19 loss to #2 Prairie the week prior. Cambric Klinzmann ran for 145 yards and three touchdowns for the Bulldogs, and he led the defense with 11 tackles (one sack) and a fumble recovery. Milo Kendrick added nine tackles, and Raegan Torres tacked on an interception. Idalia broke a three-game losing streak in the series with Otis by taking a 56-12 win on the road. That evened the series at 11 wins each in the MaxPreps era.

#2 PRAIRIE (7-0) VS #3 PEETZ (6-1)

The North division crown is on the line in this showdown between two of the top three teams in the rankings. Prairie continued its roll with a 74-14 victory at Weldon Valley last week, with Liam Bringelson completing all five of his passing attempts for 90 yards and four touchdowns. Case Kugler and Tatum Bailey both hauled in two scoring passes. Derek Dollerschell and Jacoby Nelson had a rushing and receiving touchdown apiece. The defense collected two interceptions and two fumble recoveries, with Owen Kilmer getting one of each. Peetz got its fifth straight win, beating #6 Fleming 65-30, as Dylan Wagner piled up 431 all-purpose yards, including 236 rushing. He ran for five touchdowns and threw for two more. Conner Schumacher tacked on two rushing and one receiving. Tanner Wood had a team-high 12 tackles and a forced fumble. The Mustangs and Bulldogs have swapped wins the last four years, with Peetz taking a 27-12 victory last year. That gave the Bulldogs an 11-9 lead in the series since 2004.

#6 FLEMING (6-2) VS #12 BRIGGSDALE (3-3)

Fleming’s 65-30 loss to Peetz last week was the second in three weeks for the Wildcats, and it knocked them out of contention for the North title. They trailed 44-0 at halftime in that contest. Briggsdale went into its bye last week riding two straight wins. The latest of those was a 65-38 decision over Weldon Valley two weeks ago. Sering Pino went for 267 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, and Koyen Gebauer added 65 yards and two TD. Pino racked up 22 tackles, and Kaden Sanders had two pick-sixes. Third place in the league is at stake in this match-up, which will be the 21st since 2004, with Fleming having won the last two, and 18 of 20.

#8 HANOVER (6-1) VS PRIMERO (1-5)

Hanover enters its final South West league game with the title sewn up, as the Hornets already own the tiebreakers over both #11 Branson/Kim and #15 Mountain Valley. They made it five straight wins with a 56-13 victory over Miami-Yoder last week. Hanover led 44-0 after one period, and 50-0 at the half. Angel Diaz and Aaron Lopez rushed for two touchdowns apiece, and Joseph Molina returned a pick for a score. Diaz shared the team lead of seven tackles with Nolan Sweazy. Primero dropped a 61-20 league contest to La Veta last week, as the Bulldogs trailed 26-0 at the half. This will be the first game between Hanover and Primero since 2019. The Hornets won all six match-ups between 2012 and that season.

#9 WALSH (4-3) VS #17 MANZANOLA (2-3)

Walsh had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 48-6 South East loss to #4 Granada last week. It was 48-0 at the half. Woodrow Wright ran for 67 yards and the lone touchdown for the Eagles. Dallas Alley added 127 yards through the air. Grady Mundell caught five passes, and Wright snagged four. Alley and Wright both recorded a blocked kick. Manzanola broke its three-game losing streak with a thrilling 19-18 victory over Cheraw last week. It got the Bobcats their first league win of the season. Walsh owns wins in four of the previous five meetings with Manzanola in six-man, including a 45-0 victory in 2023. That’s the last time the two sides played.

#10 WILEY (4-3) VS CHERAW (2-4)

Wiley lost its third game in four weeks, as #5 Cheyenne Wells beat the Panthers 61-14 last weekend. It dropped the Panthers to 0-3 against top-10 opponents. Grant Mauch threw two TD passes, one apiece to Ivan Chavez and Corbyn Williams. Mauch’s 13 tackles paced the defense, while Chael Cordova and Devonte Pizarro added eight apiece. Pizarro forced a pair of fumbles, recovering one, and Cordova picked off a pass. After having to forfeit its game to Cheyenne Wells two weeks ago, Cheraw was back on the field last week for a league game with Manzanola. The Wolverines dropped that 19-18. Raith Elliott ran for one score and threw for another, with Jason Aragon pulling in passing TD. Maverick Barratt also had a rushing TD. Elliott and Hayden Casper tied for the team lead with 13 tackles. Wiley and Cheraw have split the only two meetings between them in six-man, with Cheraw winning two years ago, and Wiley taking a forfeit victory after Cheraw was stripped following what had been a 54-51 win by the Wolverines.
