Week 4 Breakdown
Class 8man
Last week we saw two top ten teams lose. #1 Norwood was beat by Blanding (UT) JV 62 to 52. That loss is hard to gage but because of that loss they will drop just one spot to #2 this week. The other upset was #3 Granada vs Merino. Merino pulled off a great victory 36 to 34. That win will vault Marino into the rankings. Besides those two games the rest of the class went on to victories. There were a couple games of interest in Sargent over Sanford 44 to 20 and Akron over Simla 48 to 0. In the other games West Grand took a nice step in league with a win over Gilpin County and Springfield rolled Rolla (KS).
This week in 8 man the game of the week goes to #2 Norwood against #6 Sargent. Norwood will be looking to rebound after a tough loss last week. Previous to that game Norwood was very dominate on the defensive side of the ball allowing only 12 points in two games and 8 in the other. Their offense is still clicking though averaging 47.5 ppg. Norwood will look for their defense to step back up this week. Sargent is rolling after another 40 point offensive showing. In all their games this year they have scored over 40 points. Their defense has been pretty good as well allowing a very good Springfield team to score 28 points but have been better allowing 6 and 20 points. In their win last week Sargent ran for 238 yards and passed for 62 yards. The 238 yards was the lowest amount this season but their defense was very good grabbing 3 INT last week. The key to this game will be can Sargent score enough to keep up with Norwood’s high powered offense and which defense can step up.
#3 Sedgwick County will finally play a Colorado team facing off against unbeaten Holly. Sedgwick County has been very good on offense scoring over 55 points in every game and their defense might be even better allowing only 8 points in three games. Their offense is pretty balanced as well rushing for 365 ypg and passing for 142 ypg. They will be looking this week to see if they can keep the pace they have set and also get ready for league play because that will really test how good Sedgwick County is. Holly has started out this year great scoring over 29 points in every game and their defense has also been very stout allowing only 14 points in three games. Their offense is also very balance as they have thrown for 170 ypg and rush for 213 ypg. Their offense will need to be spot on to keep up with Sedgwick County. The keys to this game are which offense will be slowed down first. Both teams’ offenses are coming off big games last week. I still believe Sedgwick County will score a lot of points so it will be on if Holly offense can keep pace.
Another top ten match up this week is #7 Kiowa vs #8 Granada. Kiowa is having a great season since they opened the season with an upset victory of then #1 Caliche. They have scored over 40 points in their next two games. Their offense is run first but they can throw the ball. Last week they ran for 214 yards last week against Cripple Creek. Like I said though their passing attack can be dangerous throwing for 134 ypg. Kiowa will be tested again this week though facing a very good Granada team. Granada got upset last week by Marino but will be looking to bounce back. Last week Granada gave up a fourth quarter touchdown and that ended up costing them the game. Granada will need to have a better defensive showing this week. The key this week is defense. Kiowa has shown it can stop offensive teams but Granada is much more efficient. Granada will be looking for its defense to slow down a balanced attack.
