Class 6-Man First Round Playoffs Breakdown
#1 Kit Carson 9-0 vs #8 Briggsdale 5-4 (Sat 1:00pm)
Kit Carson opened the 6-Man playoffs with an impressive 66 to 0 victory of Primero. They racked up 401 yards rushing on just 21 carries which is very impressive. They used a 52 point first half to have a running clock and move onto the next round. They will need a similar defensive outing to grab a spot in the semifinals
Briggsdale opened their 6-Man playoff run by upsetting #3 La Veta 71 to 39. I had La Veta on upset alert and expected this game to be much closer but Briggsdale came to play and blew out La Veta. They used a 27 point first quarter and never looked back from there. They had 271 yards rushing and 230 yards passing to dominate the game.
These two teams have two common opponents. Both teams played Genoa-Hugo and Flagler and both went 2-0 against them. Briggsdale beat Geno Hugo 36 to 32 and beat Flagler 45 to 24. Kit Carson beat Genoa Hugo 52 to 24 and Flagler 74 to 24. This game will come down to defense. Kit Carson has proven they can score points in bunch’s topping the 40 point mark 6 times this year and also holding 4 opponents to under 14 points. Briggsdale on the other hand has given up their fair share of points. In their 4 losses they gave up over 50 points and that will have to change if they are going to pull the upset. I have Kit Carson winning big because of how efficient their offense is, I have them at a 35 point favorite.
#4 Arickaree/Woodlin 8-1 vs #5 Peetz 6-3 (Sat 1:00pm)
Out of the four games being played in 6-Man this is going to be the most interesting in my opinion. Arickaree/Woodlin started their title defense by blasting Cheyenne Wells 52 to 6. They used a 46 point first half to force the mercy rule. They ran for 237 yards on 22 carries and completed 6 of 9 passing for 86 yards.
Peetz continued their 4 game winning streak by upsetting #7 Cheraw 41 to 20. They were trailing 8 to 0 after the first quarter but used a 20 point second quarter and a 14 point third quarter to pull away from Cheraw. Peetz was able to run for 278 yards and went 6 for 10 passing for 112 yards. Peetz defense caused 7 fumbles and recovered 6 of them which is what turned the tide of the game.
These two teams have already faced off against each other. Arickaree/Woodlin was winning 34 to 12 at halftime and then Peetz rallied and this game turned into a shootout. Arickaree/Woodlin was able to hold on and win 58 to 50. I expect this to be a similar matchup and score. I see both teams scoring over 35 points and it will come down to which team’s defense makes a stand at the end. I have Arickaree/Woodlin as a 7 point favorite and this will be a good game to watch.
#3 Eads 8-1 vs #6 Pawnee 6-2 (Sat 1:00pm)
Eads got back to their winning way this week after losing to Kit Carson two weeks ago and then receiving a forfeit to end the regular season. They bounced back big blowing out Genoa Hugo 58 to 14. No stats were uploaded for Eads but I can tell you that their defense had 2 INTS and forced 3 fumbles.
Pawnee also got back to their winning ways by blowing out the #9 Cotopaxi 63 to 12. I called this game to be a blowout and it was. Pawnee used a 43 point first quarter to get the running clock and costed into the next round. Pawnee only ran 21 plays 15 of them were rushing attempts and they ran for 201 yards and went 6 for 6 passing for 134 yards. They did force three turnover and were in complete control of this game.
These teams have one common opponent in Genoa Hugo and both teams won big. Pawnee won 68 to 52 and Eads won 58 to 14. This will be a very good game as well. Eads was only challenged in their loss to Kit Carson 22 to 8 besides that they scored over 54 points in every game and only gave up over 14 points once. Pawnee does not have the big wins that Eads has but I think they can hang with Eads. If Pawnee wants a chance at winning they are going to have to score plenty of points to keep up with them. In their two losses they couldn’t score enough points to keep up with Peetz 45 to 21 or Fleming 66 to 22 but when they kept the games close they pulled off the upsets. I have Eads as the 14 point favorite but this could turn into a shootout if Pawnee’s offense gets going.
#2 Fleming 9-0 vs #7 Hanover 8-1 (Sat 2:00pm)
The final game of the first round faces #2 Fleming vs #7 Hanover. Fleming started their playoff run beating Stratton/Liberty 55 to 8. They scored 40 points in the first half and got the running clock started in the third quarter. Fleming was able to throw the ball effectively going 10 of 17 for 135 and 3 TD passes. They did run the ball effectively as well rushing for 149 yards on 21 attempts. They did force 4 turnovers and held the shutout until the fourth quarter.
Hanover pulled out a very tough game against Idalia 36 to 30. They were trailing going into the fourth quarter 30 to 28 before they scored the go ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter to pull and ahead and win. Hanover couldn’t get their rushing attack going running 18 times for 56 yards but they did throw the ball effective enough to win the game going 8 for 22 for 171 yards. Their defense forced 4 INTs and that honestly decided the game for Hanover.
Fleming was only challenged once all year and that was against Cheyenne Wells 33 to 20. They played against 6 playoff teams and are battle tested. They have scored over 55 point 8 times so the key for Hanover is to limit the amount of points that they give up. Hanover will need to get their rushing attack going which won’t be very easy. If Hanover cannot get their rushing attack going they are going to have to be more efficient in the passing game. I believe that Fleming will win big and have them as a 35 point favorite.
