Class 6-Man Semifinals Breakdown

Class 6-Man Semifinals Breakdown

#1 Kit Carson 10-0 at #4 Arickaree/Woodlin 9-1 (Sat 1:00pm)

On the line this week is the chance to be in the state finals next weekend. In 6-Man all four of the top seeds made it to the Semifinals.

Kit Carson kept things rolling last week getting by Briggsdale and ending their Cinderella run they beat Briggsdale 54 to 16. Their offense attacked Briggsdale both through the air and on the ground.  They passed for 126 yards on 5 of 11 passing and they ran the ball effective rushing for 273 yards on 21 carries.  They forced three fumbles on defense and for the third straight week their offense scored over 50 points.

Arickaree/Woodlin comes into this match as the defending state champions and got one step closer to the state finals beating Peetz 32 to 22. Beating a team twice in the same year is hard and Arickaree/Woodlin did that.  They ran the ball very effective rushing for 271 on 33 carries and passing for 127 yards on 9 of 17 passing.  Arickaree/Woodlin has played very good as of late and kept that rolling this week.

These two teams have 2 common opponents. They each played Flagler and Cheyenne Wells and both teams won.  Kit Carson won 74 to 24 against Flagler and 24 to 0 against Cheyenne Wells.  Arickaree/Woodlin won 71 to 30 against Flagler and 52 to 6 against Cheyenne Wells.  Just looking at common opponent scores this looks to be a great game.  Both teams will be looking to run the ball. Kit Carson averages 217.6 ypg and Arickaree/Woodlin averages 242.3 ypg.  For Arickaree/Woodlin to pull the upset they will need their offense to be on point and to limit the amount of turnovers they commit.  They also need to be in control of the paces of the game.  For Kit Carson to win they also need to control the pace of the game and lean on their defense to keep the game close.  Both of these teams have proven they can score points this year and I think this game will be the same way.  I see the final score having both teams over 30 points.  Kit Carson will be the favorite in this game but I am going with the upset.  I have Arickaree/Woodlin winning by 10 points.

#2 Fleming 10-0 vs #3 Eads 9-1 (Sat 1:00pm)

Fleming was preseason ranked #1 and they have held up to the hype so far this season. They came in as the #2 seed and now are one game for the state championship.  They blasted Hanover 59 to 24 and came at them with a balanced attack offensively.  They threw for 248 yards on 18 of 25 passing and ran for 276 yards on 43 carries.  They threw 6 touchdown passes which is the highest amount all season and adds another faucet to their offensive attack.  On defense they forced 6 turnovers 3 INTS and 3 fumbles.  The 24 points given up was the second most they have given up,

Eads was trailing at half time 30 to 24 but used a 24 point third quarter to overcome that deficient and ended up winning 66 to 38. Forcing turnovers was the difference in the game.  They forced 2 INTS and played much better defense in the second half.  The 38 points surrendered was the most points allowed all season by this Eads defense and will need to bounce back against this potent Fleming offense.

These teams have 4 common opponents and they both went 4-0 against them. Fleming beat Pawnee (66-22), Miami-Yoder (70-0), Cheyenne Wells (33-20), Stratton/Liberty (55-8).  Eads beat Pawnee (66-38), Miami-Yoder (Forfeit), Cheyenne Wells (60-12), Stratton/Liberty (60-6).  When you look at scores for each team they are nearly identical except for the Cheyenne Wells game.  If you look at the loss that Eads had it was to #1 Kit Carson and was only by 14 points.  Both teams played great schedules and this will come down to which teams’ defense makes a huge stand.  I could see points being limited this game because both teams sport strong defensive squads.  I do give the edge to Fleming offensively because they have proven they can throw the ball when things get tough on the ground.  This extra faucet could be the deciding factor when two teams of equal caliber meet up.  Fleming will be the favorite and I have them winning by 10.
