6man League Breakdown

Week 2 Class 6-Man Top Ten Breakdown

Week 2 Class 6-Man Top Ten Breakdown

Week 1 of the 6-Man season is completed and there were a few games that shocked me particularly in the top 10.  The biggest was Cheyenne Wells pummeled #4 Flagler/Hi Plains.  That I think has set the tone and this week will be fun.  Some non-Top ten games from last week were: Briggsdale over Elbert 73-37, Prairie over Deer Trail 64-14, and La Veta over Aguilar 56-13.

#1 Stratton/Liberty host Elbert.  Elbert opened the season with a 73-37 loss to Briggsdale.  Elbert had a hard time stopping Briggsdale offense.  Briggsdale ran for 355 yards and passed for 180 yards.  Elbert must improve their defense before stepping in against the #1 team in the state.  #1 Stratton/Liberty opened the season with a Top Ten battle between them and Genoa-Hugo.  Stratton/Liberty was successful and won 51-14.  Stratton/Liberty on offense ran the ball very effectively rushing for 337 yards and 3 TD’s.  They only threw for 44 yards so that could be an area of improvement.  Offensively they were led by senior RB Jacob McCormick 182 yards 2 TD’s.  Defensively Stratton/Liberty limited Genoa-Hugo to 165 yards rushing and 141 yards passing.  They also forced 4 sacks, 2 fumbles and 2 INT’s.  Stratton/Liberty should not have to hard of a time this week and I have them winning 50-14.

#2 Peetz travels to face Creek Valley NE.  Creek Valley just dropped to 6-Man football and they have yet to play a game this year.  #2 Peetz on the other hand opened against a Top 5 team.  They played North Park in week 1.  Peetz was very successful and won 63-13.  Peetz offensively had a good day they passed for 111 yards and ran for 292 yards and 6 TD’s.  Peetz on offense was led by junior RB Bryson Long 178 yards rushing and 4 TD’s.  Defensively Peetz was outstanding limiting North Park to just 56 yards passing and 134 yards rushing.  They also caused 2 fumbles and forced 3 INT’s.  Since we don’t know much about Peetz opponent this year I am still guessing they will win by over 40 points.

#3 Kit Carson hosts Cheraw.  Cheraw opened the season with a tough 36-6 loss to Edison.  No stats from either team have been uploaded.  Cheraw will need to quickly bounce back and be ready for a very tough game.  #3 Kit Carson opened the season with a hard fought 32-26 victory over Idalia.  No stats have been uploaded for either team as well.  Kit Carson lost 8 seniors from last year so the more playing time these younger kids play the better.  Kit Carson should grab an easy victory 48-6.

#4 Otis host Weldon Valley.  Weldon Valley opened the season with a 42-6 loss to Sierra Grande.  Weldon Valley did not upload offensive stats but defensively they surrendered 100 yards passing and 183 yards rushing.  Weldon Valley will need to get their offense figured out before making the trip to Otis.  #4 Otis faced traditional power Eads in week 1.  Otis was in a hard fought game at half time winning 18-14.  The second half though was a completely different story with Otis scoring 24 unanswered points in the third quarter and that was all they needed in a 54-14 victory.  Otis on offense had 144 yards passing and 175 yards rushing.  Junior Bryce Miracle led Otis in rushing with 119 yards and 2 TD’s.  Defensively Otis buckled down in the second half and posted a shutout.  Otis also forced 4 INT’s and 2 fumbles in a very good defensive game for Otis.  Otis will be the heavy favorite in this game and I have them winning 50-6

#5 Cheyenne Wells travels to face Branson/Kim.  Branson/Kim is in their second year of having a program and have yet to play a game this year.  #5 Cheyenne Wells had the biggest upset and most shocking win of week 1.  Cheyenne Wells lost a very talented senior class from last year runner up team so that is why the result was a surprise.  Cheyenne Wells faced off against then ranked #4 Flagler/Hi Plains.  Cheyenne Wells was victorious winning 70-20.  After the first quarter Flagler/Hi Plains was winning 20-16 but a 26 point second quarter and 20 point third quarter put the game away and completed the upset.  Cheyenne Wells was balanced in their offensive attack.  They passed for 226 yards and ran for 167 yards.  Quade Pelton started his first game at QB and it was a dandy he threw for 206 yards and 5 TD’s.  Cheyenne Wells was returning some talent on defense so we knew they would be strong but they were impressive from the second quarter on.  Defensively they held Flagler/Hi Plains to 135 yards rushing and 95 yards passing.  Cheyenne Wells forced 1 sack, 1 fumble, and 4 INT’s.  Cheyenne Wells now must keep building these young players they have and they should be victorious this week against Kim/Branson.  I have Cheyenne Wells beating Kim/Branson 50-14.

#6 Arickaree/Woodlin host Fleming.  #8 Fleming did not play last week but they did open in zero week with a tough 31 to 25 loss to North Park.  Fleming had a hard time stopping the run surrendering 265 yards.  Fleming also turned the ball over 4 times with fumbles so Fleming must improve their offensive and be ready to get back on track.  #6 Arickaree/Woodlin opened with a bang blowing past Walsh 50-6.  No stats have been posted from the game but this is a huge test for both teams early on in the season.  Fleming has some questions to answer after getting beat by North Park in Zero Week.  Arickaree/Woodlin is looking to build of last week success.  I have Arickaree/Woodlin winning this game 35-21.

#7 North Park has a bye this week.  They face La Veta next weekend in a critical battle for both teams.  North Park lost last week to Peetz 63-13.

#9 Hanover host Cotopaxi.  This is one of the more intriguing match ups.  Cotopaxi is sitting just outside the Top Ten and Hanover is sitting at #9.  This is a monster game for both teams to prove they belong in the Top 10.  Cotopaxi opened with a 65-13 victory over Mountain Valley.  Cotopaxi threw the ball well throwing for 208 yards and rushing for 159 yards.  The offense was led by senior QB Kurt Voll who went 14-19 for 208 yards and 6 TD’s and 0 INT’s.  Cotopaxi is out to prove that they are a legit team in the playoffs and not just an easy first round victory for another team.  Cotopaxi returned a lot of talent and this is a big test for them.  Hanover opened with a 63-0 victory over Cripple Creek.  No stats have been posted from the game.  Hanover is looking to rebound from a down season last year and they are returning a ton of talent from last year’s team.  Hanover will be in a battle this week with Cotopaxi and I could see this game turning into a high scoring affair.  Cotopaxi has the offensive talent but defensively struggled last year in the playoffs.  Hanover also returned players from last year’s team but are focused and ready to prove they are a legit Top 10 team.  I have Cotopaxi winning this game narrowly 48-45.

#10 Genoa-Hugo travels to face Eads.  Eads did not opened the season the way they wanted  getting blow out in the second half and losing 54-14 to Otis.  They now face their second Top 10 team and are looking to improve from last week.  Eads must improve on offense they were turnover prone in week 1 they had 4 INT’s and 2 fumbles.  Eads defensively did not play horribly giving up 144 yards passing and 175 yards rushing but because of the turnovers I am guessing Otis had shorter fields.  Eads must quickly bounce back from a tough game and look to grab a win.  #10 Genoa-Hugo in week 1 faced #1 Stratton/Liberty and were blasted 51-14.  Genoa-Hugo had a very hard time stopping the run giving up 337 yards.  That is probably the biggest area to fix from last week’s game.  Offensively Genoa-Hugo was able to gain yards passing for 141 yards and rushing for 165 yards but like Eads Genoa-Hugo had 4 turnovers.  That will be a huge key to this game.  Whichever team can limit the turnovers will win.  Both teams will be looking for win #1 on the season and could help tip a season in the right direction.  I am going with Genoa-Hugo to win a close 35-28 game.
