First Round Results and Thoughts

Fowler vs Custer

I will post my normal First Round Results and Predictions Results on Monday like normal.

Mainly I am looking at all the upsets that occurred in Classes 2A thru 6-Man.  There was at least one upset in each class according to seeds.

Class 2A

Class 2A opened on Friday night with a very close game between #5 Classical Academy and #12 Aspen.  Classical Academy won the game 36-24 and I figured that this game would not be as close as it was.  Saturday had 7 games slated in 2A.  Big winners were #3 Bayfield over #14 Elizabeth 51 to 0 and #4 La Junta over #13 Pagosa Springs 34-0.  Those were the only two blowouts of Saturday.  #7 Faith Christian scored the 3rd biggest win by margin beating #10 Machebeuf 17 to 0.  #1 Platte Valley had to hold off a late surge from #16 D’Evelyn 46-34 which was also much closer than expected.  #6 Basalt was in a battle with #11 Salida and pulled out a very close 28-22 win and #6 Basalt was the only 6 seed to win from Class 2A thru 6-Man.  Two upset took place on Saturday one which could have gone either way and the other was a shocker.  #8 Eaton beat #9 Sterling 24-13 which in terms of seeds is not an upset but Sterling beat Eaton during the regular season and Eaton got revenge and pulled a very nice win.  The biggest shocker of the day in all classes had to be #2 Kent Denver and I am guessing most people projected state champion was upset by #15 Resurrection Christian 29-21.  I am going to try and watch any film I can and see what happened in this game and will talk about it more on Tuesday.  Kent Denver being upset  by Resurrection Christian put all other teams on alert and really took everyone by suprise.  Great win by a young Resurrection Christian team and look out for this team.

Class 1A

Class 1A didn’t have the shocker that 2A had but still some upsets did occur.  To start off Friday both the #1 team and #2 team kicked us off.  #1 Bennett won easily 48 to 0 over #16 Highland and #2 Meeker likewise took care of business over #15 Cornerstone Christian 50-0.  Saturday had 6 games slated with 2 other big wins.  #5 Burlington blitzed #12 Platte Canyon 41 to 0 and #4 Strasburg took care of #13 Wray 35-6.  Also moving on the the Quarterfinals was #3 Centauri in a fight with #14 Colorado Springs Christian but winning 21-7.  Two of the three games were upsets due to seed.  #10 Limon picked up its second win over #7 Crowley County 19-6 and #9 Paonia blanked #8 Peyton 13-0.  The big upset in 1A was #11 Monte Vista upsetting #6 Clear Creek 39-34.  Monte Vista used 1 huge INT in the second half to grab a two score lead and never give it up.  Monte Vista picked up a huge win an now host rival Centauri next week.

Class 8-Man

Things got started in 8-Man on Friday with 1 game.  #7 Sargent took care of business against #10 Gilpin County 56-26.  Saturday featured 7 games and the majority of them were close.  #1 Sedgwick County started their title defense with a 49-0 victory over #16 McClave.  #5 Holly also took care of business against #12 Haxtun 32-16.  Also advancing in a much tighter game than anticipated was #2 West Grand over #15 Norwood 24-14.  After those 4 games things got very interesting in the 8-man ranks with technically 4 upsets happening.  #9 Fowler beat #8 Springfield 36-14 and that according to seed is an upset but Fowler was favored in that game.  #11 Mancos upset #6 Rocky Mountain Lutheran 64-28 and a huge bounce back game for Mancos.  The other two upsets I didn’t see coming.  #4 Hoehne was upset by #13 Caliche.  Caliche is a very young team and are going to be scary to see how far they go this year and next year.  Caliche had a great game plan and took care of a very good Hoehne team.  The biggest upset though in 8-Man was #3 Merino being upset by #14 Soroco.  I said in my 8-man breakdown that if you let a team stay in the game they could pull an upset and Soroco did just that.  Soroco led the entire game and was very effective in pulling a huge upset over #3 Merino.

Class 6-Man

Quarterfinals action was going on in the 6-Man ranks and all 4 games took place Saturday.  #4 Cheyenne Wells took care of business in a dominate win over #5 North Park 45-12.  That was the only blowout in the Quarterfinals.  #3 Peetz held off #11 Fleming 40-28 and picked up their second win over a very tough and young Fleming team.  #1 Stratton/Liberty was in their toughest game of the season in a rematch with #9 Otis.  #1 Stratton/Liberty was able to come back and beat #9 Otis 40-32.  The long upset was #7 Kit Carson upsetting #2 Prairie 32-26.  Kit Carson was able to hold off Prairie now face #3 Peetz and will look to upset another North League team.
