#3 Bayfield faced off against #4 La Junta in the 2A State Championship and was essentially the rubber match between the two schools. Bayfield and La Junta have previously meet the past two years in the semifinals and were tied at 1-1. Bayfield opened the first quarter of the state championship with a pair of touchdowns. The first touchdown was a 16-yard pass from Hayden Farmer to Carl Heide. Later, in the first quarter Bayfield struck again with a 15-yard pass from Farmer to Dax Snooks making the score 14-0 and the quarter ended that way. In the second quarter La Junta was trying to drive the ball but an interception by Keyon Prior at the 50 gave the ball back to Bayfield. Bayfield then drove to the 4 yard line were Carl Heide ran for 4 yards and a touchdown making the score 20-0. La Junta then tried to gain some momentum. With just under a minute left in the half Jon Nuschy completed a 10 yard pass to Zach Archuleta and made the score 20-7 heading into half time. In the third quarter there was not much happening and neither team scored and Bayfield held a slim 20-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Bayfield then created some separation with 8 minutes left in the fourth quarter Farmer completed a 65 yard pass to Heide for a touchdown to move the score to 27-7 and Bayfield added one last touchdown to finish off the game and the final score was Bayfield 34 La Junta 7. Defensively Bayfield forced 2 interceptions by Cole Woods and Keyon Prior. Bayfield also had 8 sacks in the game and were led by Ryan Phelps (3) and Cole Woods (3). Leading Bayfield in tackles was Cole Woods with 14 tackles and Hunter Killough with 12 tackles. Offensively Bayfield had 220 yards of total offense. Hayden Farmer had 109 yards passing with 3 TDs and 1 INT. Bayfield had 111 yards rushing with David Hawkins leading all rushers with 59 yards. Leading Bayfield in receiving was Carl Heide with 74 yards receiving and 2 TDs. Bayfield did a good job of limiting La Junta offense and forcing La Junta to throw the ball. Once again Congratulations to Bayfield High School on capturing the 2A State Championship.
