
Basketball Wednesday and Thursday Notes
Overall great opening two days of Basketball but the real fun begins Friday and Saturday with most of the Top 10 teams in play.
Boys
Class 3A
3A saw no upsets in the first two days of action. Wednesday had 1 top 10 team in action and it was #9 Vanguard vs Canon City (4A). Vanguard was able to grab an opening season win beating Canon City 79 to 69. We saw one other top 15 team in action Wednesday Colorado Academy beat KIPP 61 to 40. Thursday saw a few more team in action in the Top 15. #1 Sterling opened their season with a 68 to 36 win over Chadron (NE). We also saw #6 Alamosa open their season with a solid win over Palmer Ridge (4A) 56 to 31. Other teams to note were DSST-Green Valley Ranch beating Eaton 50 to 38, DSST-Stapleton beating Conifer 76 to 68, Resurrection Christian beating Classical Academy 55 to 52, La Junta beating Hoehne 52-37, and Centauri beating Sargent 91 to 63.
Class 2A
Wednesday was the opening day for Class 2A basketball and two ranked teams were in play on day #1. #1 Crowley County opened their season against Florence (3A) and walked away with a 50 to 17 victory. Also #4 Highland faced a tough Valley (3A) team in their first game. Highland was able to sneak out a 56 to 53 win and move to 1-0 on the season. On Thursday we had only 1 top 10 team in play. #7 Del Norte started their season again Las Animas. Del Norte flew past Las Animas 81 to 45. Two other games of note were West Grand beating Loveland Classical 56 to 34 and Akron losing to Brush 50 to 56. Most team in 2A open their season this weekend and we will really get a good look at 2A this weekend.
Class 1A
Wednesday was a slow day for Class 1A with only one team to mention. Cornerstone Christian played 3A DSST-College View and Cornerstone Christian picked up a big 64 to 28 wins. Thursday had much more action in 1A. 6 Top 10 teams were in play Thursday. #1 South Baca played #9 Cheyenne Wells in what was the best game of the opening two days in the lower classes. #9 Cheyenne Wells losing a great senior class pulled off a great upset beating South Baca 58 to 57. Cheyenne Wells will be a team to watch for the rest of the season and see if they can keep up a hot start. #2 Front Range Christian went up a few classes to open their season playing Eagle Ridge Academy (3A). Front Range Baptist beat Eagle Ridge Academy 63 to 48. #3 Creede opened play against Centennial and they also started with an impressive 64 to 23 victory. #5 Primero opened their season against Raton (NM) Primero like Creede got off to a quick start winning 60 to 29. #7 Heritage Christian hosted Belleview Christian in their first game. Heritage Christian beat Belleview Christian 79 to 41.
Girls
Class 3A
Had one big upset in the first two days of the season. On Wednesday though no upsets were present. #8 Kent Denver opened the season against a very solid Clear Creek (2A) team. Kent Denver was able to hold off Clear Creek winning 48-43. #10 Colorado Academy also opened their season with a solid win over Kennedy (4A). Colorado Academy won 58 to 46. 1 other team to note was University beat Roosevelt (4A) 43 to 33. Thursday had 4 Top 10 team in action and movement in the polls will happen after a big upset Thursday. #1 Centauri took care of a young Sargent team 49 to 20. #5 Sterling was out of state for their opening game beating Scottsbluff (NE) 44 to 33. #7 Resurrection Christian opened against a very good Denver Christian team. Resurrection Christian was able to hold off Denver Christian and capture a 57 to 46 win. The big upset on Thursday featured #9 Lutheran playing Monte Vista in the Bennett Tournament. Monte Vista pulled off the stunner upsetting #9 Lutheran 60 to 50 behind 21 points from Mariah Barbosa. Monte Vista lost some very talented seniors and picking up a huge early season win could catapult them forward. Other games to note are Moffat County holding off Rangely 50 to 41, Eaton beating Gunnison 41 to 37, and Faith Christian beating Bennett 44 to 32.
Class 2A
Class 2A did not have much action in the Top 15 on Wednesday or Thursday. Only 1 Top 10 team was in action Thursday and that was #3 Del Norte blasting Las Animas 67 to 35. Friday and Saturday will give us a much better look at the rest of the Class.
Class 1A
Class 1A got off to a solid start with 3 top 10 teams playing Thursday. #4 Antonito opened their season against Sierra Grande. Antonito took care of business winning 60 to 34. #5 Kim/Branson opened their season against Top 15 Cheyenne Wells and Kim/Branson took care of business easily winning 51 to 11. The third ranked team was #10 Springfield squeezing out the 64 to 56 win over South Baca. Two other games to note are Heritage Christian over Belleview Christian 52 to 21 and Sangre De Cristo over Ouray 62 to 16.
