Girls Basketball Class 3A Top Ten Breakdown
2A has some very good girls’ basketball teams and I really think 2A will be one of the most competitive classes for girls’ basketball.
#1 Yuma
Yuma opened the season competing in the Canine Classic. Yuma faced Frontier Academy in the first round and took care of business winning 79 to 20. Yuma then faced Highland in the championship and dominated once again winning 57-23. Yuma early on is being led by Cody Robinson 15.0 ppg and Chasey Blach 12.5 ppg. Yuma this weekend is competing in the Goodland Topside Tipoff. They will face Norton KS in the first round and either Burlington or Goodland KS in the second round. Yuma will be tested at this tournament and will be interesting to see how they do.
#2 Swink
Swink opened with one game against Florence. Swink held on late to beat Florence 52 to 37. Swink was led by Kyla O’neal 13 points and Courtney Estrada 12 points. Swink was tested by Florence in game #1 and now are competing in a very competitive tournament this weekend. Swink is playing in the La Junta Holiday shootout which has 4 ranked teams in 3A and 2A. Swink will open against 3A Monte Vista (1-2). Swink will be tested by Monte Vista who upset Lutheran in their opening game. Swink will then face either #2 Lamar (3A) or Sanford in the second round. We will learn quite a bit about Swink after this tournament.
#3 Del Norte
Del Norte competed in the Mountain Top Classic in their first weekend. Del Norte faced Las Animas, 3A Salida, and #1 3A Centauri in the tournament. Del Norte did a good job against Las Animas and Salida beating them 67-35 & 59-43. Del Norte then faced #1 Centauri at halftime was leading Centauri. The depth and size Centauri had wore down Del Norte and Del Norte ended up losing by 20 points but the way they played against Centauri really impressed me. Del Norte early on is being led by Kendra Parra 20 ppg and Lacey Jones 9.0 ppg. Del Norte is also playing in the La Junta Holiday Shootout and they will face 3A La Junta (3-0) in the first round. Del Norte will then face either #1 Centauri or Fowler in the second round.
#4 Wray
Wray opened the season with one game against Perkins County NE. Wray took care of business and dominated 67 to 20. Wray was led by Morgan Smith 17 points and Peyton Pecar 13 points. Wray will compete in the Goodland Topside Tipoff this weekend. They face McCook KS (1-1) in the first round. They then will face the winner between Wallace County KS or Colby KS in the second round. This will be a very good tournament for Wray with a date with Yuma possibly looming if both teams can win 2 games.
#5 Limon
Limon opened their season competing in the Kiowa Tournament. They faced Dayspring Christian and Hayden in the tournament. Limon did a good job of taking care of business beating Dayspring Christian 57 to 37 and Hayden 45 to 18. Limon was led by Anna Weisensee 12.5 ppg and Elivia Hilferty 8.5 ppg. Limon is still extremely young so playing time is crucial for this team. Limon only has 1 game this week against Crowley County (0-3). Limon still has 2 more games left in December and they will be challenging games.
#6 Simla
Simla has yet to open the season but will this weekend when they play Akron (0-2) and Merino (1-1). Akron is a traditional power but could be having a down year. Simla must make sure to take care of business against both these teams. The Merino game will be a tough challenge for Simla and seeing how they compete in both games will be key for this team. Simla will only play 4 games in December.
#7 Paonia
The Defending State Champions opened the season hot winning both games in the WSL Shootout. Paonia beat Norwood 42 to 11 and blast Ridgway 60 to 9. Paonia had a chance to keep extending their winning streak when they faced Olathe last night 12/5. Paonia winning streak was snapped tough by 3A Olathe (1-2). Paonia started slow in the first half and could never recover falling 35 to 28. Paonia has one more game this week when they face 3A Coal Ridge (0-1). Paonia has one more tournament before the year ends and getting playing experience is key for them going forward.
#8 Ellicott
Ellicott opened the season with a pair of games against Thomas MacLaren and James Irwin. Ellicott was dominate in both games. Ellicott beat Thomas MacLaren 62 to 7 and James Irwin 49 to 31. Ellicott is being led early on by Samantha Chambers 12.0 ppg and Graciela Donez 9.5 ppg. Ellicott has a pair of games this weekend against James Irwin (1-1) and Crowley County (0-3). We really won’t get a much better look at Ellicott until next year.
#9 Haxtun
Haxtun had one game to open the season. They faced Merino and it was a nail bitter. Haxtun escaped with a 46 to 45 win. Haxtun was led by Marissa Schelling 21 points and Brooklyn Davis 8 points. Haxtun has a pair of games this week. They face Caliche (1-0) and Sedgwick County (1-0). Haxtun will get challenged by both teams and will be another good look at Haxtun.
#10 Ignacio
Ignacio opened their season against Dove Creek. Ignacio blasted Dove Creek 65 to 19. Ignacio now will face 3A Montezuma Cortez this week. I am guessing that Ignacio is missing most of their schedule online and if not, they only have 1 more game in the month of December.
