Meeker has a very tough schedule in December with games against #9 Grand Valley (3A) and #4 Coal Ridge (3A). We will know quite a bit about Meeker after these two weeks.
#6 Yuma
Yuma started the season unranked and not even mentioned in my other category. I can honestly say I overlooked them and they are making me not look more into their team. Yuma competed in the Canine Classic which featured then ranked #4 Highland and #6 Alexander Dawson. Yuma came out in the opening round and dominated Alexander Dawson 87 to 46. Yuma then in the championship kept it going and pulled their second consecutive holding off Highland 59 to 56. Yuma is currently the big surprise early on. Yuma now travels to Goodland KS to compete in the Goodland Topside Tipoff. Yuma will face Norton KS (0-1) in the first round. Win or lose they face either Goodland KS or Burlington. Yuma will be tested in this tournament and well see if the top 10 ranking was correct.
#7 Highland
Highland the season with 3 games and went 2-1 in those games. Highland beat 3A Valley 56-53 and then dominated 1A Pawnee 67-26. Highland then was upset by Yuma 59-56. Highland played last night against 3A Eaton and was upset yet again 72-66. Both loses were close games and things don’t get much easier for Highland. They face Platte Valley next week and Platte Valley will more than likely be ranked in 3A. Highland will have a few things to work on before their next game and a much-needed weekend off.
#8 Del Norte
Del Norte opened their season in the Mountain Top Classic playing 3 games. Del Norte dominated in both their opening round wins beating Las Animas 81 to 45 and 3A Salida 69-47. Del Norte early is being led by Carlos Parra who is averaging 37.7 ppg. Del Norte this weekend competes in the La Junta shootout and will face host 3A La Junta (3-0). Del Norte will be tested in the first round and by La Junta and things are not much easier as the face either Centauri or Fowler in the second round.
