Girls Basketball Class 1A Top Ten Breakdown
2A has some very good girls’ basketball teams and I really think 2A will be one of the most competitive classes for girls’ basketball.
#1 Kit Carson
Kit Carson opens their regular season tonight 12/8 against #9 Wiley (2-0). Kit Carson then play Idalia (1-1) tomorrow night 12/9. Those are Kit Carson only games in the month of December. Their opening game of the season against Wiley will tell us quite a bit about the defending state champions.
#2 Fleming
Fleming opens their regular season tonight 12/8 against Caliche (1-1) and then play tomorrow 12/9 against 2A Holyoke (2-0). Fleming has 5 games in the month of December and have a couple monster games next week against Briggsdale and 2A Haxtun.
#3 Briggsdale
Briggsdale opened their season with a single game against Union Colony Prep. Briggsdale dominated the game winning 63 to 23. Briggsdale was led in the game by Skyla Miller 14 points and Ailaina Suppes 12 points. Briggsdale is taking part of the Prairie Classic this weekend. They open the four team tournament against Shining Mountain and then will play either Prairie or Arickaree/Woodlin. We will learn a bit more about Briggsdale in this tournament but next week they have a huge matchup with Fleming.
#4 Kim/Branson
Kim/Branson opened their season playing in the RL Ballard Tournament. They opened the tournament against Cheyenne Wells beating Cheyenne Wells 51 to 11. Kim/Branson faced then ranked #10 Springfield in the championship and took care of business winning 47 to 35. Kim/Branson played one game this week as well against #7 La Veta and showed why they were a Top 5 team beating La Veta 50 to 28. Kim/Branson has one more game this week against Genoa-Hugo (0-2)
#5 Eads
Eads opened the season with one game against Walsh and dominated in that game winning 59 to 25. Eads was led in that game by Mariah Smith 13 points and Morgyn Johnson 10 points. Eads has two more games in the month of December and they are against Springfield 12/8 and Bethune 12/9. Eads will be tested y a tough Springfield team that stuck with Kim/Branson. We will learn quite a bit from this game.
#6 Sangre De Cristo
Sangre De Cristo started the season unranked but after a dominating start of the season and pulling a huge upset in the opening weekend we moved Sangre De Cristo into the rankings. Sangre De Cristo hosted the Thunderbird Shootout and dominated their opening two opponents. Sangre De Cristo beat Ouray 62 to 16 in the first round then beat Creede 71 to 21 in the second round. Sangre De Cristo then faced #4 Antonito in the championship and pulled off the upset. Sangre De Cristo beat Antonito 46 to 45. Sangre De Cristo then is very young as well no seniors on the roster. Sangre De Cristo is being led by Jessica Slane 18.0 ppg and Kylee Christensen 13.0 ppg. Sangre De Cristo has one game this week against 2A South Park and then has two more games next week.
#7 La Veta
La Veta opened the season playing in Elbert Tournament. They faced Rocky Mountain Lutheran first in the four team tournament. La Veta beat Rocky Mountain Lutheran easily winning 61 to 13. La Veta then faced Elbert in the championship and took care of business winning 44 to 25. La Veta has already played one game this week. They played #4 Kim/Branson on Tuesday 12/7. La Veta fell to Kim/Branson 50 to 28. La Veta has one last game this week against Manzanola.
#8 Antonito
Antonito opened their season playing in the Thunderbird Shootout. They played Sierra Grande in the first round dominating 60 to 34. Antonito then played Cheraw in the semifinals. Antonito then squeezed out a tight win against Cheraw but still won 33 to 29. Antonito then faced a very tough Sangre De Cristo team and were upset in a tight game 46 to 45. Antonito schedule does not get any easier playing Escalante tonight 12/8 and then 2A Crested Butte on Saturday. Both games are winnable for Antonito and they will have a chance to bounce back.
#9 Wiley
Wiley opened their season with a pair of games. They played Flagler/Hi Plains winning easily 47 to 21 Wiley then played a tough Cheyenne Wells team beating them in OT 56 to 47. Wiley has one game left in December and it won’t be an easy one. Wiley will travel to #1 Kit Carson tonight 12/8 and will really give us a good look at Wiley.
#10 McClave
McClave started the season unranked but in the other category. McClave opened up with solid wins against Holly 40 to 34 and then Elkhart KS 42 to 31. McClave is taking place in the annual Border War and have two tough games against Greeley County (KS) and Syracuse (KS). McClave will be tested in both games and we will learn a lot about this team.
