Girls Basketball Class 2A Top Ten Breakdown

Ranking Notes: Not a ton of movement this week in the rankings.  The only switch in the top 5 is Limon jumping Wray and even then, that ranking could be switched.  The only big move in the Top 10 is Paonia dropping out of the rankings.  Paonia lost to Olathe and that is enough to unranked Paonia.  Ellicott, Haxtun, and Ignacio all move up a spot to fill the hole.  The new team to the ranking this week is Holyoke who is off to a blazing start at 3-0.

#1 Yuma (5-0)

Yuma is off to a blazing start at 5-0.  Yuma played in the Goodland Topside Tipoff and won the tournament going 3-0.  Yuma opened the tournament played Norton KS and won 58 to 36.  Next, they played Burlington and won 63 to 47.  In the championship Yuma faced Colby KS and once again took care of business winning 55 to 37.  Yuma currently has 3 players scoring over 10 point a game and are being led by Chasey Blach 15.6 ppg and Cody Robinson 13.0 ppg.  Yuma has 2 games this week and their first matchup with rival Wray is on the schedule.  Yuma faces Chase County NE (3-2) on 12/14 and then play rival #5 Wray (3-2) on 12/15.  The Wray vs Yuma game will give us an interesting look at both teams.  After break Yuma opens league play against Wiggins and are the favorites to win District 2.

#2 Swink (3-1)

Swink partook in the La Junta Holiday Shootout this past weekend is were tested in the tournament.  Swink opened the La Junta Holiday Shootout against 3A Monte Vista and won easily 61 to 26.  In the next round Swink fell to 3A #4 Lamar 50 to 43.  In the third-place game Swink meet up with #3 Del Norte and it came down to the wire.  Del Norte had a few opportunities to send the game to overtime but fell just short and Swink held on to win 40 to 37.  Swink is being led by Courtney Estrada 13.0 ppg and Brianna Denton 11.8 ppg.  Swink has 2 games left in the month of December.  First, they will face off against rival Fowler (2-2) on 12/15.  They then face Hoehne (4-1) on 12/16 and this game will test Swink again.  Swink after break will open league play and face John Mall first, Swink is the favorite to win the District 6 championship.

#3 Del Norte (4-3)

Del Norte has played a brutal schedule to open the season facing 3A #1 Centauri twice already and #2 Swink.  Del Norte last week played 3 games in the La Junta Holiday Shootout.  Del Norte opened the tournament against La Junta and won easily 54 to 29.  Del Norte then faced Centauri for the second time and lost 50 to 39.  In the third-place game Del Norte faced #2 Swink and fell just short 40 to 37.  Del Norte is very battle tested after these games and it showed last night 12/12 when they played 1A Sierra Grande and won 59 to 43.  Del Norte early on has 3 players scoring over 8 ppg and are being led by Kendra Parra 20.0 ppg and Lacie Jones 9.0 ppg.  Del Norte has one last game in the month of December against Dolores (2-4) on 12/14.  Del Norte after break opens league play against South Park and Del Norte is the favorite to win District 1.

#4 Limon (3-0)

Limon is off to a perfect 3-0 start to the season.  Limon has yet to be challenged early in the season.  Limon had one game last week against Crowley County and easily took care of business 48 to 13.  Limon early on has only 1 player scoring double digits but 4 players over 5 ppg.  Limon is being led by Anna Weisensee 13.7 ppg and Elivia Hilferty 6.3 ppg.  Limon still has two games left in the month of December against Merino (2-3) on 12/15 and Evangelical Christian (1-3) on 12/16.  Limon won’t be tested until the new year when they open league play.  Limon is currently the favorite to win District 4 ahead of Denver Christian.

#5 Wray (3-1)

Wray is off to a good start to the season going 3-1.  Wray participated in the Goodland Topside Tipoff Tournament.  Wray opened the tournament against McCook NE and took care of business winning 62 to 45.  Then faced Colby KS and lost in OT 53 to 48.  Wray though finished off the tournament taking third place beating Burlington 59 to 45.  Wray currently has 3 players scoring over 10 ppg.  Wray is being led by Morgan Smith 16.8 ppg and Peyton Pecar 12.0 ppg.  Wray will play one of their biggest games of the year on 12/15 against Rival #1 Yuma (5-0).  This is a huge test for both teams and will give early insight into both teams.  Wray after that plays a game 12/19 against Dundy County NE.  Wray after break opens league play against Holyoke.  Wray is projected as the #2 team in District 2 but followed by Holyoke and Haxtun.

#6 Simla (3-0)

Simla is off to a hot 3-0 start to the season.  They beat Akron 61 to 20, Merino 49 to 35 and beat Kiowa last night 12/12.  Simla has two games left in the month of December.  Simla plays Elbert (3-3) on 12/15 and Dolores Huerta (2-4) on 12/16.  We won’t learn a ton about Simla until they get into league play.  Simla after break will open league play against Peyton who is undefeated.  Simla is currently the slight favorite to win District 8.  The big problem I see is Ellicott, Peyton, Calhan, and Colorado Springs School are all undefeated and District 8 should be a great race to watch.

#7 Ellicott (4-0)

Ellicott is off to a perfect 4-0 start but have been tested early on.  Last week Ellicott played two games one of them against 3A James Irwin and they pulled off a 50 to 44 Overtime victory holding off a tough James Irwin team.  Ellicott followed that game up with a nice 49 to 26 win over Crowley County.  Ellicott has 4 players scoring over 8 ppg and are being led by Samantha Chambers 12.0 ppg and Graciela Donez 9.5 ppg.  Ellicott has one final game in the month of December and it looks to be a good one.  They play Peyton (3-0) on 12/15 and this could give us a good look at how good both teams are.  Ellicott after break will play two non-league games against Center and 3A Manitou Springs before opening league play against Dolores Huerta.  Ellicott is projected #2 just behind Simla but will be tested by Peyton, Calhan, and Colorado Springs School.

#8 Haxtun (4-0)

Haxtun is off on the right foot starting at 4-0 on the season.  Haxtun played 2 games last week beating 1A Caliche 38 to 34 and beating Sedgwick County 45 to 39.  Haxtun has played their fare share of close games to open the season.  Last night 12/12 Haxtun had their biggest victory beating 1A Peetz 49 to 26.  Haxtun currently has only 2 players scoring 6 ppg or more and are being led by Marissa Schelling 19.0 ppg and Brooklyn Davis 6.0 ppg.  Things don’t get easy for Haxtun going forward.  Haxtun plays #10 Holyoke (4-0) on 12/15 and follow that game up with 1A #2 Fleming (1-1).  Haxtun will be tested by both teams and we will have a better look at who they are.  Haxtun after break has a non-league game against Leyton NE and then jump into league play against Holyoke.  Currently Haxtun is projected as the #3 team in District 2 but are hoping to snag the #2 spot but will be challenged as well for the #3 spot by Holyoke and Merino.

#9 Ignacio (4-0)

Ignacio has started the season on fire with a perfect 4-0 start.  Ignacio last week played 2 games winning all both by double digits.  Ignacio played Nucla and won 58 to 15 and Montezuma Cortez 56 to 27.  Ignacio played one game last night 12/12 and won easily 42 to 25 over Dolores.  Ignacio has one game left in December next week against Mancos.  We will get a good look at Ignacio after break when they play Dolores and then jump into league play.  Ignacio is the favorite to win District 3.

#10 Holyoke (4-0)

Holyoke is the new team into the rankings after a solid 4-0 start.  They played 1 game last week beating 1A #2 Fleming 51 to 34.  Holyoke followed that win up this week rolling Merino 38 to 19.  Holyoke also snagged good wins against Strasburg and Vanguard to open the season and really look to make a run in District 2.  Holyoke currently has only 2 players over 6 ppg and are being led by Taeryn Trumper 18.3 ppg and Grace Dillie 13.0 ppg.  Holyoke will now face a huge test on 12/15 against #8 Haxtun (4-0) and then end their December schedule against Sedgwick County (2-1).  After break Holyoke opens league play against Haxtun.  Holyoke is currently projected to be the #4 team but have hopes of moving up in the District.
