Girls Basketball Class 1A Top Ten Breakdown

Ranking Notes: Not a ton of movement this week in the rankings.  The only switch in the top 5 is Limon jumping Wray and even then, that ranking could be switched.  The only big move in the Top 10 is Paonia dropping out of the rankings.  Paonia lost to Olathe and that is enough to unranked Paonia.  Ellicott, Haxtun, and Ignacio all move up a spot to fill the hole.  The new team to the ranking this week is Holyoke who is off to a blazing start at 3-0.

#1 Kit Carson (3-0)

Kit Carson is your defending state champions and off to a very good start in 2017.  Kit Carson opened the season last week blast both Wiley (56 to 30) and Idalia (51 to 18).  This week Kit Carson is competing in the Lamar Holiday Tournament.  They opened the tournament last night against Walsh and easily took care of business winning 72 to 18.  Through 3 games Kit Carson has 3 players scoring over 10 ppg and are being led by Micayla Isenbart 17.0 ppg and Tess Hornung 12.0 ppg.  Kit Carson will continue playing the in the tournament tonight 12/15 against #7 Springfield (3-1).  This will be a great test for Kit Carson early on.  Kit Carson will then play either Holly (4-1) or #10 McClave (4-1).  Kit Carson has a good shot to establish their #1 rankings in these next two games.  After break Kit Carson will play a pair of non-league games against Bethune and Arickaree/Woodlin.  Kit Carson won’t open league play till 1/12 against Granada.  Kit Carson is projected to win district 2 but will be challenged by Cheraw, McClave, and Eads.

#2 Fleming (1-1)

Fleming opened their season last week playing a pair of games.  Fleming split the pair beating Caliche 57 to 39 but fell to 2A #10 Holyoke 51 to 34.  Fleming will have a chance to bounce back immediately but standing in their ways is #3 Briggsdale.  Fleming will play Briggsdale tonight 12/15 and is a huge game early in the season for both teams.  Fleming will then play #8 2A Haxtun tomorrow 12/16 to close out the week.  Fleming has one last game in December against Weldon Valley on 12/19.  We will really have a good look at Fleming by the end of December.  Fleming after break has a league game against Pawnee and then a non-league game against Sedgwick County.  Fleming is currently the favorite to win District 4 but will be challenged by Briggsdale, Heritage Christian, and Longmont Christian.

#3 Briggsdale (4-0)

Briggsdale is off to a very quick start of the season with a perfect 4-0 start.  Briggsdale has yet to be challenged this year blowing out all 4 opponents they have played.  Briggsdale played 2 games last week beating Shining Mountain 59 to 4 and Arickaree/Woodlin 49 to 19.  Briggsdale then played one game this week as well blast Denver Jewish Day 74 to 29.  Briggsdale will play their toughest game of the season tonight 12/15 against Fleming (1-1).  This is a league game as well, so the implications are huge.  Briggsdale has one last game in the month of December against Weldon Valley which is also a league game.  Currently Briggsdale is projected as the #2 team in District 4 but after tonight that could all change.  District 4 looks to have 5 solid teams and only 3 will qualify for regionals.

#4 Kim/Branson (5-0)

Kim/Branson has played a tough opening schedule of the season and have come out a perfect 5-0.  Last week Kim/Branson played 2 games and went 2-0 against those teams.  Kim/Branson beat #9 La Veta 50 to 28 and then beat Genoa-Hugo 57 to 25.  Kim/Branson has already played one game this week taking care of business against Des Moines NM beating them 49 to 34.  Kim/Branson has 2 final games in the month of December against Primero (1-3) tonight and then Sierra Grande (3-3) tomorrow night 12/16.  Kim/Branson after break will play a league game against Wiley on 1/5 and then a huge non-league game against #6 Antonito on 1/6.  Kim/Branson is currently the favorite to win District 3 but will be challenged by Holly and Springfield.

#5 Sangre De Cristo (4-0)

Sangre De Cristo started the season unranked but were in the Top 20.  Sangre De Cristo played 1 game last week against 2A South Park and proved why they belonged in the Top 5 blast South Park 49 to 23.  Sangre De Cristo now plays a huge league game tonight 12/15 against Manzanola (1-5).  Sangre De Cristo will then close out the month of December with an important game against 2A Custer County (3-2).  Sangre De Cristo after break will play two huge non-league games Rocky Ford and Sargent both 2A opponents.  Sangre De Cristo will get back into league play 1/12 against Cotopaxi.  Sangre De Cristo currently is the favorite to win District 6 but will be challenged by Antonito, Cotopaxi, La Veta, and Sierra Grande.

#6 Antonito (4-1)

Antonito bounced back for their first lose of the season last week.  They played 2 games last week against Escalante NM and 2A Crested Butte.  Antonito took care of both pulling off a close win over Escalante 58 to 53 and then blowing past Crested Butte 69 to 16.  Antonito is done for the rest of December but right after break have a monster game against #4 Kim/Branson (1/6).  After that game they play Cimarron NM before jumping into league play.  Antonito opens league play against Creede on 1/12.  District 6 will be a great race to watch this year Antonito is currently projected to finish second just behind Sangre De Cristo, they played head to head already with Sangre winning by 1.  District 6 this year will get 3 teams into regionals and will be a very fun race to watch.  Antonito, Sangre De Cristo, Cotopaxi, La Veta, and Sierra Grande will fight it out for 3 spots at regionals.

#7 Springfield (3-1)

Springfield started the season preseason ranked but fell out of the rankings after losing to #4 Kim/Branson.  Last week Springfield pulled a nice upset beating #8 Eads 42 to 39 and that win moved Springfield back into the rankings.  Springfield is participating in the Lamar Holiday Tournament and opened the tournament with a solid 62 to 44 wins over Wiley.  In round #2 Springfield will play #1 Kit Carson (3-0).  This will show how far Springfield has come this season.  Springfield will then play either Holly or McClave in the championship or 3rd place game.  We will have a solid look at Springfield after both games.  Springfield is currently projected to finish second in District 3.  Springfield will be challenged by Holly and of course look to knock off Kim/Branson at the #1 spot.

#8 Eads (2-2)

Eads is off to a tough start this season.  Eads played two games last week going 1-1 in those games.  Eads lost to #7 Springfield 42 to 39 but bounced back nicely beating Bethune 68 to 16.  Eads this week is also playing in the Lamar Holiday tournament.  Eads opened the tournament against #10 McClave and Eads was upset against losing to McClave 29 to 24.  Eads is now in the consolation bracket and will play Granada (1-4).  Eads should win that game and will face either Walsh or Wiley in the Consolation Championship.  Both games are important for Eads to keep building momentum.  After break Eads opens league play against Cheraw and then has a non-league game against Stratton/Liberty.  Eads is projected as the #3 team in District 2.  Eads is chasing Kit Carson and McClave but are being chased themselves by Cheraw.

#9 La Veta (3-1)

La Veta opened the season perfect at 2-0.  La Veta last week played two important games against #4 Kim/Branson and Manzanola.  La Veta split the games losing to Kim/Branson 50 to 28 and then beating Manzanola 59 to 21.  La Veta has one last game in the month of December against Cotopaxi (3-0).  This is a league game and has early implications on the league race.  La Veta after break plays a non-league game against Cheraw before jumping back into league play against Primero.  La Veta is currently projected as the #3 team in District 6 but the District 6 race will be a fun race to watch.

#10 McClave (4-1)

McClave opened the season unranked but after an upset win over Holly they moved into the rankings.  McClave played 3 games last week participating in the Border War against KS.  McClave went 2-1 in those games.  McClave beat Elkhart KS 42 to 31 and Syracuse KS 41 to 31.  McClave lost to Greeley County 37 to 28.  McClave this week is participating in the Lamar Holiday Tournament.  They opened the tournament with an upset win over #8 Eads 29 to 24.  McClave now has a rematch against Holly (4-1) tonight 12/15.  They will then either play Kit Carson or Springfield.  McClave will have the rest of the questions answered by the end of the tournament.  McClave after break plays a pair of non-league games against Centennial and #4 Kim/Branson.  McClave then opens league play against #1 Kit Carson on 1/19.  The District 2 race will be another great race to watch with Kit Carson, Cheraw, McClave, and Eads all fighting for 3 spots at regionals.
