Class 2A Top Ten Boys Basketball Breakdown
Ranking Notes: Class 2A boys is wide open this year and without a completely dominate team/teams the rankings have been changing weekly. The spots not changing this week are #1 Crowley County who has been dominate in the open month of the season and #2 Sedgwick County who barely escaped with a 4-point win over Holyoke last week. Moving up to #3 is Byers. Byers only set back was their opening game against 3A Vanguard since that lose they have won 6 straight games including a 20-point win over Holyoke and a 29-point win over Genoa-Hugo. #4 this week is Meeker who fell one spot due to a 21-point loss to 3A undefeated Grand Valley. #5 is Yuma who stays put this week. Yuma lost an OT game to Chase County NE which is not a great lose but followed that with an 18-point win over Wray, still a ton of questions about Yuma. Coming in at #6 is Del Norte who is moving back up with polls. Del Norte has yet to lose to a 2A opponent and took care of business against Sierra Grande and Dolores last week. #7 is Vail Christian who is scoring 76.6 ppg and their only loss is to 4A Battle Mountain, but Vail Christian is still seeking their first quality win of the season. #8 is Sanford who has back to back loses to 3A opponents by a combined 4 points. #9 is Ignacio who picked up their first lose of the season to a very good Grand County UT team but bounced back nicely blowing past Basalt and Mancos. Rounding out the Top 10 is Highland who is barely holding onto the #10 spot. Highland keeps the ranking after blasting 3A Liberty Common but plenty of questions are still to be answered by Highland.
#1 Crowley County (7-0)
Crowley County keeps things rolling picking up two more blowout victories last week. Crowley County beat Las Animas 65 to 29 and Swallows Charter 59 to 25. Crowley County has been challenged a few times this year by Limon (49-40) who is on the verge of being ranked and Ellicott (46-33). Crowley County through the month of December has three players scoring 10ppg or more and are being led by Bradley Carnes-Clabey 12.9 ppg and Hayden Carter 10.1 ppg. Crowley County after break jumps right into league play with a game against Rocky Ford on 1/6. We don’t know much about Rocky Ford, so this could be an interesting game. The second game after break is against Hoehne who is also challenging for the League Crown. Crowley County is currently the favorite to win District 6 but will be challenged by Fowler, Hoehne, and maybe Rocky Ford. District 6 is weak on the other 4 teams so looks for the Top 3 or 4 teams to separate themselves.
#2 Sedgwick County (5-0)
Sedgwick County is off to a quick start at 5-0. One close game against Garden County NE opened their season but 4 straight games they won by 15+ points until this week. Sedgwick County played two games this week blowing past Creek Valley NE 46 to 27 and then sneaking past Holyoke 40 to 36. Holyoke nearly upset Sedgwick County and now Sedgwick County like most 2A Boys teams have questions about their ranking. I still feel solid with Sedgwick County at #2. Sedgwick County after break plays a league game against Wiggins on 1/4 and then have a non-league game against 1A Fleming. Sedgwick County does not have a full schedule on MaxPreps and if anyone has their schedule please send it to me. Sedgwick County is currently the favorite to win District 2. District 2 seems to be a bit down from last year with perennial Holyoke and Akron having somewhat down years. Sedgwick County will be challenged by a very improved Yuma team, Haxtun, Merino, and you cannot county out Holyoke.
#3 Byers (6-1)
Byers lost their opening game of the season to 3A Vanguard who is very solid but since that lose have played outstanding winning 6 straight games. Byers played 3 games last week winning all 3 in big fashion. Byers beat 1A Genoa-Hugo 70 to 41, Wiggins 73 to 28, and Elbert 72 to 20. Byers finished up their December schedule with 3 players scoring over double digits but only 3 players scoring over 5 ppg. Byers is led in scoring by Austin Davis 17.4 ppg and Brady Shelley 15.2 ppg. After break Byers plays Evangelical Christian on 1/6 and Simla on 1/9 both games will test how good Byers will be this season. Byers plays in District 4 and does not face many District opponents through the year. Byers will be the favorite in District 4 though. Byers will be challenged by Limon for the top spot in District 4.
#4 Meeker (3-1)
Meeker falls back 1 spot after picking up their first lose of the season. The lose was a good lose for Meeker as they fell to #7 3A Grand Valley. Meeker fell a spot due to losing by 21. Meeker still has 1 final game in the month of December and once again will test how good Meeker is. Meeker plays 3A Coal Ridge (4-1) tonight 12/21. Meeker will be tested by a very good Coal Ridge team who is just outside of the rankings. Meeker currently has 5 players scoring 6 ppg or more and are being led by Logan Hughes 14.5 ppg and Zach Dinwiddie 13.0 ppg. After break Meeker jumps right into league play with a pair of games against West Grand (1/5) and Hayden (1/6). Meeker currently is the favorite to win District 5 but right behind them is Vail Christian. District 5 will be an interesting race due to Paonia having a down year and will be interesting to see which team can rise up a take the District over.
#5 Yuma (5-2)
Yuma played 2 games last week picking up their second loss of the season in OT to Chase County NE which is not the best loss. Yuma rebounded nicely blowing past Wray 70 to 52. Yuma high ranking is due to a pair of impressive wins over Dawson School and Highland. Yuma still has plenty of questions to answer about how good of a team are they. After break Yuma jumps right into league play with a game against Wiggins (1/12) and Holyoke on 1/19. Yuma will get tested by league play and questions will get answered about how good Yuma can be. Currently in District 2 Yuma is projected as the #2 team. Remember in class 2A you only get 3 teams into regionals so fighting for a Top 3 spots is the key. Chasing Yuma will be Haxtun, Merino, and Holyoke.
#6 Del Norte (6-2)
Del Norte continues the steady rise back up the rankings following a solid month of December. Del Norte picked up both loses early in the month but have won 4 straight games to end the month. This past week Del Norte beat Sierra Grand 71 to 58 and Dolores 78 to 47. Del Norte has finished their December schedule and end with 3 players scoring over 6 ppg. Del Norte is being led by Carlos Parra 31.0 ppg and Izeah Peterson 12.8 ppg. Del Norte after break jumps right into league play with a pair of games against South Park (1/12) and Sargent (1/13). Del Norte is currently projected just ahead of Sanford for the #1 spot in District 1. The race for the #1 spot will be very good though between Del Norte and Sanford and picking a clear-cut winner is tough this early in the season.
#7 Vail Christian (4-1)
Vail Christian continues their rise up the rankings jumping up to #7 this week. Vail Christian is a scoring machine averaging 76.6 ppg and only once have been held under 60 point this season. Vail Christian picked up their loss early on to 4A Battle Mountain but are now on a 4-game winning streak. This week Vail Christian beat 3A Aspen 81 to 51. Vail Christian has plenty of questions how good they actually are but with league play starting some of those questions will get answered. Vail Christian through the month of December have 6 players scoring 6 ppg or more and are being led by Sebastian Moritz 16.0 ppg and Bryan Trujillo 14.6 ppg. Vail Christian after break jumps right into league play with a pair of games against North Park (1/5) and West Grand (1/6). Vail Christian currently is projected as the #2 team in district 5 but will be challenged by Plateau Valley, Hotchkiss, Paonia, and West Grand.
#8 Sanford (3-2)
Sanford started the season on a three-game winning streak but after back to back loses to 3A team have fallen to #8. Sanford picked up their second lose of the season following a 40 to 37 loss to a very improved Monte Vista team. Sanford is not done with their December schedule and play 3A Centauri tonight 12/21 and this is a monster game for Sanford. Sanford needs some momentum after two very close losses and picking up a win over a solid Centauri (5-2) team is key. Sanford after break opens league play against Crested Butte (1/6) and then Center (1/13). Sanford is currently the #2 team in District 1 but are right behind Del Norte for the top spot. Chasing Sanford for the #2 spot is Cripple Creek and Sargent.
#9 Ignacio (4-1)
Ignacio schedule ramped up this past week played 3 games and 1 game this week. Ignacio participated in the Montezuma-Cortez tournament and opened against a very good Grand County (7-1). Ignacio fell just short losing to Grand County 56 to 48. Ignacio did bounce back nicely blowing out Basalt 81 to 52. Ignacio ended their December schedule with one final game this week against Mancos. Ignacio made quick work of Mancos beating them easily 67 to 32. Ignacio after break will participate in a tournament against 3A Bayfield and 3A Montezuma Cortez. Ignacio will get a very good challenge by both teams and really show us how good Ignacio is. Currently Ignacio is the hands down favorite to win District 3. Ignacio already beat easily Mancos and Dolores. I see Ignacio winning District 3 easily.
#10 Highland (3-3)
Highland finished up their tough December schedule on a high note picking up a very good win against 3A Liberty Common. Highland’s three loses are to very solid teams in Yuma, Eaton, and Platte Valley. Highland though is on the verge of being unranked and must get off to a solid start in January. Highland through the month of December has 3 players scoring over 5 ppg and are being led by Tate Bessire 15.7 ppg and Trey Allmon 14.2 ppg. After break Highland opens league play against Dayspring Christian (1/5) and Front Range Christian (1/9). Highland has some very tough games to open January but must get off to a solid start. Highland currently is my pick to win District 7, but this will be a tough race. Competing with Highland for the top spot is Clear Creek, Twin Peaks Charter, Union Colony Prep, Dayspring Christian, and Dawson School. District 7 will be a fun race to watch and seeing these early games will be key.
