Girls Basketball Class 2A Top Ten Breakdown
Ranking Notes: 1 thru 7 all stay the same from last week. 2A Girls looks to be one of the more competitive Classes to watch in 2A. At #8 this week is Holyoke who beat Haxtun to take their spot and move Haxtun out of the rankings. Ignacio is #9 after a perfect start and move up one spot from #10. New to the rankings this week is #10 Vail Christian. They are off to a perfect start and have played well to start the season.
#1 Yuma (7-0)
Yuma continues to roll and played two games last week winning both by 10 points. Yuma beat Chase County NE 48 to 38 and then raced rival #4 Wray on 12/15. Yuma was able to snag a huge win against Wray beating them 52 to 42. Yuma is finished with their December schedule and have 5 players scoring 6 ppg or more. Yuma is led by Chasey Blach 16.7 ppg and Cody Robinson 13.7 ppg. Yuma after break opens league play against Wiggins on 1/12 and is a huge game for both teams. Then Yuma has back to back Non-league games against #8 Holyoke and Burlington. The Holyoke game will be the big one to watch right after break. Yuma is the favorite to win District 2 but will be chased by Wray, Holyoke, Wiggins, and Haxtun.
#2 Swink (5-1)
Swink since picking up their first lose of the season has been on a fire winning 3 straight games with the big win against Del Norte. Swink last week played two games against Fowler (3-3) and Hoehne (5-1). Swink made quick work of both opponents beating Fowler 50 to 33 and blast Hoehne 52 to 18 both of which were league games as well. Swink thru December had 4 players scoring over 6 ppg and were led by Courtney Estrada 15.0 ppg and Brianna Denton 14.2 ppg. After break Swink continues league play with games against John Mall (1/5) and Swallows Charter (1/6). The game to have your eyes on is on 1/12 against undefeated Rocky Ford. Swink is the favorite to win District 6 and made easy work of Hoehne and Fowler already. Swink could be challenged by Rocky Ford and their game on 1/12 will be a huge sign of how close of a race District 6 will be.
#3 Del Norte (5-3)
Del Norte finished up their December schedule blasting Dolores 49 to 18 and really playing breaking out some solid defense. Del Norte seems to have gained some much-needed momentum to end the month of December with back to back wins. Del Norte currently has 5 players scoring over 6 ppg and are being led by Kendra Parra 20.0 ppg and Lacey Jones 9.0 ppg. Del Norte after break jumps right into league play against South Park (1/12) and Sargent (1/13). Del Norte is the favorite to win District 1 but will be challenged by Sanford and Sargent for the top spot.
#4 Limon (5-0)
Limon continued their hot start ending December with back to back wins over Merino 53 to 32 and Evangelical Christian 59 to 14. Limon is still missing the quality opponent to answer some questions but after break games against Denver Christian and Simla will answer those questions. Limon is still extremely young which if you look at the top 3 teams are all juniors and sophomores as well. Limon thru December had 2 player score over 6 ppg but had 6 players score over 5 ppg. Limon was led by Anna Weisensee 14.2 ppg and Amy Weisensee 6.8 ppg. Limon after break will play Genoa-Hugo (1/5) and Denver Christian (1/6). The Denver Christian game will be a good test for Limon after break. District 4 is a weird District where many opponents do not play each other. Limon though is the favorite to win District 4 followed by Denver Christian and Burlington.
#5 Wray (4-2)
Wray ended the month of December in a big way. Wray played 2 games last week losing to Yuma 52 to 42 but bounced back big against previously undefeated Dundy County-Stratton beating them 48 to 41. Wray gained some much-needed momentum heading into break. Wray through the month of December has 5 players scoring over 6 ppg and are being led by Morgan Smith 15.5 ppg and Peyton Pecar 12.0 ppg. Wray after break plays a non-league game against Holyoke (1/9) and then opens league against Sedgwick County on 1/13. Wray currently is projected as the #2 team but will have to hold of Holyoke, Haxtun, and Wiggins for the #2 spot.
#6 Simla (4-0)
Simla continued their hot start last week beating Elbert 60 to 15. Simla has played a weaker schedule in the month of December with their only game of not being against Merino. Simla will have some challenges after break to really see how good they are. Simla through the month of December has 5 players scoring 6 ppg or more and are being led by Jerraldawn Rector 11.8 ppg and Kegan Hamacher 8.5 ppg. Simla after break opens league play against Peyton on 1/6 and then have a non-league game against Byers on 1/9. Currently District 8 looks to be a great race for the #1 spot. Simla is the very slight favorite over Ellicott for the #1 spot. Simla like I mentioned will be challenged though by Ellicott, Colorado Springs School, and Calhan.
#7 Ellicott (5-0)
Ellicott finished their December schedule perfect at 5-0. Ellicott played 1 game last week blasting Peyton 49 to 25. Ellicott like Simla is missing a signature early season matchup but after break a game against Manitou Springs plus a very strong District 8 will test this Ellicott team. Ellicott has 3 players scoring over 6 ppg and 5 players scoring over 5 ppg. Ellicott is led by Samantha Chambers 14.0 ppg and Graciela Donez 11.3 ppg. After break Ellicott plays back to back non-league games against Center (1/6) and #7 3A Manitou Springs (1/9). The Manitou Springs matchup will be a huge game and could spark Ellicott with a win. Ellicott opens league play against Dolores Huerta on 1/12. Like I mentioned in the Simla post District 8 will be a great race to watch. Ellicott is projected just behind Simla as the #2 team. Ellicott will be chased by Colorado Springs School and Calhan.
#8 Holyoke (6-0)
Holyoke jumped two spots up to #8 this week after their 12-point win over previous #8 Haxtun. Holyoke also followed up their 12-point win over Haxtun by blasting Sedgwick County 54 to 14. Holyoke had a very solid December with good wins against 3A Vanguard, 1A Fleming, Merino, and Haxtun. Holyoke through December had only 2 players score over 5 ppg. Holyoke was led by Taeryn Trumper 16.3 ppg and Grace Dille 12.3 ppg. After break Holyoke opens league play against Haxtun (1/5) and then have back to back non-league games against Burlington (1/6) and #5 Wray (1/9). All three games will be solid tests for Holyoke and the game against Wray is a big measuring stick for Holyoke. District 2 has 3 teams ranked in the Top 10 and Holyoke is projected as the #3 team. Holyoke will be looking to hold off Wiggins and Haxtun for the #3 spot.
#9 Ignacio (5-0)
Ignacio is off to a very hot start at 5-0. Ignacio has yet to be challenged by anyone this year but also have played a weak schedule with their signature win against Montezuma-Cortez 3A (2-6). Ignacio after break will play another 3A team in Bayfield (1/9) and then open league play against Ridgway (1/12). Bayfield may challenge Ignacio and possibly another non-league game against Sargent could challenge Ignacio. Currently Ignacio is the hands down favorite to win District 3 and I don’t see many challengers as their league without Ignacio has won just 3 games and have 3 teams without a win. Ignacio RPI will also be affected by this so winning out may be needed to not destroy their seed.
#10 Vail Christian (6-0)
The new team into the rankings this week is Vail Christian. Vail Christian is off to a perfect start with 5 of their 6 wins against 3A or 4A opponents. Vail Christian though has only played 2 teams this offseason with .500 records and they are 4A Battle Mountain and 3A Lake County. Vail Christian will be challenged after break and we will learn how good they are. Vail Christian after break opens league play against undefeated 1A North Park (1/5) and then West Grand (1/6). Vail Christian opening game after break will test how good they are and if they can stay ranked. Vail Christian currently is the favorite to win District 5, but District 5 is a bit down this year with Paonia losing an amazing senior class. Vail Christian will be challenged and tested by Rangely, Plateau Valley, Paonia, Hotchkiss, and Soroco. Seeing who comes out of District 5 will be very interesting.
