Boys Basketball League Predictions Class 2A
In Class 2A things are much different than 3A. In Class 2A you must finish in the Top 4 of your district to make it to Regionals (5 for District 5 or 3 for District 3). I will pick essentially which teams are making it to regionals and some District have more than 4 good teams and picking those districts will be extremely tough. I really like the new set up for Class 2A this year with 32 teams making it to regionals and not just 24. I also am glad they are giving District Champions the right to host and makes the District Title a huge goal. Remember the team I am picking to win the District will host a regional. Also, Class 2A Boys is wide open with no one team looking invincible and teams losing game they shouldn’t.
District 1
- Del Norte
- Sanford
- Sargent
- Center
District 1 has always produced some very good teams with Del Norte and Sanford both making the State Tournament last year and of course Sanford winning 3 straight State Championships. District 1 looks to be a near similar outcome from last year. I have Del Norte winning the league title, but Sanford will challenge that big time. Del Norte and Sanford in my eyes are a cut ahead of the rest of the District and I expect each matchup to be a fight to the finish and I expect them in the District Championship. Sanford is #2 after falling to Monte Vista and Centauri in back to back games something I am sure has not happened for Sanford in a while. Sanford must bounce back quickly if they plan on challenging Del Norte. Sargent is my #3 team just ahead of Center. Sargent has the head to head win on Center early but expect their games to be extremely close. Center is #4 after picking up a solid win over Ellicott and proving they can challenge for a Top 4 spots. They must learn to close out games but expect them to be in contention for a Top 4 spots. Cripple Creek, South Park, and Crested Butte all could challenge Center and Sargent for the #3 and #4 spot.
District 2
- Sedgwick County
- Yuma
- Holyoke
- Haxtun
District 2 produced last years state champions Holyoke. Holyoke lost a very good senior class but have managed to compete in every game nearly beating Sedgwick County a few weeks ago and Holyoke also beat Haxtun last week. This year I have Sedgwick County as the #1 team. They are off to a 7-0 start and will be a tough team to beat. Sedgwick County also lost some very talented players from last years team but have plenty returning to win a District title. Yuma is #2 after a surprise 5-2 start including wins against Dawson School and Highland they have moved into the Top 10 in 2A. Yuma though will have to hold off a very good group of teams for the #2 spot but also will be looking to challenge Sedgwick County for the Top spot. Holyoke is #3 after their big win over Haxtun and Burlington. Holyoke though has lost to Merino already this year so seeing if they can keep the #3 spot will be interesting. At #4 is Haxtun who recently hit a rough patch losing to Holyoke. Haxtun will have to bounce back quickly and will be looking to hold off Merino and Akron for the #4 spot. Anything could happen in this District and will be fun to watch.
District 3 (Only 3 teams make it to Regionals)
- Ignacio
- Mancos
- Dolores
District 3 is one of the more cut and dry District. Ignacio has already beat Mancos and Dolores easily and are the clear-cut favorites to win District 3. They must hope that Mancos and Dolores can also win out to help their RPI. Ignacio will be hurt by their RPI and will probably draw a very tough Regional unless teams in their District help them out. Mancos is the #2 team in District 3 and should walk away easily with the #2 spot. Dolores is #3 and not much is known about Dolores. Dolores should though grab the #3 spot as they are the closest to .500 after Mancos and Ignacio. District 3 will probably have some of the lower RPI numbers.
District 4
- Byers
- Limon
- Denver Christian
- Burlington
District 4 has your top 2 teams and then the rest of the league fighting for the final two spots. Byers is my #1 team despite falling out of the rankings. Byers picked up a tough 55-53 loss to Evangelical Christian. Byers though was impressive until this point with multiple 20+ point wins and if they can get back to that they could roll to the District Championship. Byers and Limon are a cut about the rest of the District and they will battle for the #1 and #2 spot. Limon is my #2 team and picked up an important 16-point victory over Denver Christian. Limon has show they are a tough out and should battle Byers for the Top 2 spots. The rest of the District following Byers and Limon is up for grabs. Denver Christian has show the most upside and are the only team after Limon and Byers to score more points than they give up. Denver Christian is my #3 team but will be challenged by Burlington and Front Range Christian for that spot. Burlington is my #4 team just ahead of Front Range Christian. Burlington despite losing to Front Range Christian early on is still ahead of them. They have a very good senior leader and hoping some underclassmen step up and help get this team into regionals.
District 5 (5 teams into regionals)
- Meeker
- Vail Christian
- Paonia
- Hotchkiss
- West Grand
District 5 is the only District that gets 5 teams into regionals and the battle for the #4 and #5 spot will be interesting. My #1 team is Meeker. Meeker is returning a ton of talent from last years team and played a tough early season schedule. Meeker two losses are to 3A Grand Valley and Coal Ridge both who where ranked at 1 time. District 5 is wide open this year like Class 2A but by the end I believe Meeker will separate themselves from the rest of the District. At #2 is Vail Christian who has started the season scoring over 58 points in ever game this season. They are a high-flying offense, but this is somewhat uncharted territory for them after a losing season last year. Vail Christian was in a tough battle with West Grand last week but pulled ahead to win by 10. Vail Christian is not a clear cut #2 and will be tested by Paonia. Paonia comes in at the #3 spot and are your defending District Champions. They lost a ton of talent from last year and it has shown in some games. Paonia is on a 3-game winning streak beating Hotchkiss by 17, Plateau Valley by 21, and Caprock by 50. Paonia could easily challenge for the #2 spot but must be able to score points. At #4 is Hotchkiss who took a huge step this past week beating Plateau Valley by 8. Hotchkiss seems to be ahead of the other teams in District but will be tested by West Grand, Plateau Valley, and Rangely. At the #5 spot I have West Grand. West Grand has played a very tough schedule and hopefully they have grown from the early season tough schedule. West Grand is off to an 0-2 start in the District but played the Top 2 teams and challenged Vail Christian only losing by 10. West Grand must have success
District 6
- Crowley County
- Fowler
- Hoehne
- Rocky Ford
District 6 has 3 very solid teams in Crowley County, Fowler, and Hoehne but the #4 spot could be a big question mark. I have Crowley County as the #1 team in District 6. They are also my #1 team in 2A and are off to a solid start to the season at 8-0. Fowler is my #2 team ahead of Hoehne. Fowler early struggled a bit losing to Centauri, Del Norte, and then Calhan. Fowler though has won two straight against John Mall and Swallows Charter and will look to push Crowley County for the #1 spot. Hoehne is my #3 team and have not played a very tough schedule. Hoehne one loss is to La Junta by 21 and on 1/12 have their huge matchup against Crowley County. The #4 spot is the big question mark in District 6. Currently I have Rocky Ford as the #4 team, but they will be fighting with John Mall and Swallows Charter for the #4 spot. Rocky Ford does already have win over John Mall and Las Animas but with the main part of their schedule coming up they will be tested. Rocky Ford lost to Crowley County last week by 21 and seeing how they bounce back will be a huge key.
District 7
- Highland
- Clear Creek
- Dayspring Christian
- Twin Peaks Charter
District 7 looks to be a great race to watch for all 4 spots. I can only count out 2 of the 8 teams which means 6 teams will be fighting for 4 spots. Highland currently is my #1 team and have played a brutal schedule. Highland has played Yuma, Eaton, Platte Valley, and already picked up a huge win against Dayspring Christian. Highland is on a two-game winning streak and must use the momentum to keep rolling in League play. Clear Creek is my #2 team, but huge question marks still arise about this team. Clear Creek has 1 lose but it was to 2-5 Lyons in the opener by 2. They have rebounded well winning 5 straight games but plenty of question marks still surround Clear Creek. Coming in at #3 is Dayspring Christian. Dayspring Christian is currently 3-3 and on a two-game losing streak. Dayspring did pick up an impressive 12-point win over Union Colony Prep. The recent two losses though were to Akron and Highland. Dayspring Christian will have a good shot to bounce back Denver Academy but seeing how they play the rest of the year will be key to if they can make a run for regionals. The #4 spot will go to Twin Peaks Charter. Twins Peaks Charter currently is 6-1 with their lone loss coming to Limon by 8. Twin Peaks Charter has good wins against Peyton and beating Lyons by 21. Twin Peaks Charter could easily jump up to #2 but lack of a tough schedule has me uncertain about them. Twin Peaks Charter played a tough Denver Christian on 1/12 and maybe a few questions could be answered there. The other two teams who could easily take a spot are Union Colony Prep and Dawson School
District 8
- Simla
- Evangelical Christian
- Calhan
- Dolores Huerta
District 8 is a 9-team league with 8 very competitive teams. My #1 team is Simla who is 6-0 with wins against Akron, Merino, Dolores Huerta, and Peyton already on their resume. Simla beat Peyton 65 to 28 and have shown there are a force in District 8. Simla is already 2-0 in district play picking off two solid teams and with some tough games on the horizon we will see how good Simla is. #2 is Evangelical Christian. ECA is currently 4-3 with tough losses to Fowler, Vanguard, and Limon all 3 have been ranked at one point this year. ECA picked up a monster win this past week beating Byer (who was ranked) 55 to 53 in OT. ECA now hits league play action against Peyton and really some early games will tell if they are the real deal to make it to regionals. Calhan is my #3 team at 4-2. Calhan two loses are decent with one to #1 Crowley County and the other to Burlington. Calhan did score nice wins over Fowler and Genoa-Hugo recently. Plenty of question marks still surround how good Calhan is and with back to back games this weekend we will find out if they deserve the #3 spot. Coming in at #4 is Dolores Huerta who edges out Miami-Yoder and Ellicott for the final spot. Dolores Huerta has three losses to Simla, Hoehne and Shining Mountain but has solid wins over Miami-Yoder and John Mall. Their win over Miami-Yoder gives them edge for the final spot but they will be challenged by the rest of the league trying to steal a regional spot.
