Class 1A Boys Basketball District Breakdown
Quick Note: Region 2 and Region 3 are seeded by RPI.
District 1
District 1 is a 5 team league that has 2 available spots for Regionals. Their compete in Region 1 and this year will face District 8 in Region 1. District 1 appears to do a 4 team bracket with 1 play-in game. This year the play in game appears to be between Dove Creek and Nucla. I am going to use RPI to seed the 3 other teams. #1 seed would be De Beque, #2 seed is North Park, #3 is Ouray. I am picking Dove Creek to beat Nucla and will face #1 De Beque and #2 North Park would face #3 Ouray. The two winners will advance to Regionals and the District winner will face the #2 team from District 8. My District Champion would be De Beque and my runner up is Ouray.
District 2
District 2 is a 6-team league competing for 3 spots at Regionals. All District besides 1 and 8 get 3 teams to regionals. District 2 will compete in Region 3 and it’s a heavily loaded region. The #1 and #2 seeds in District 2 receive bye’s in the first round and gives them two shots at making regionals. The bracket would be #4 Cheraw vs #5 Eads, #3 McClave vs #6 Granada. I have Cheraw and McClave winning. I am giving Cheyenne Wells the nod for the #1 seed they don’t face each other till this weekend. #1 Cheyenne Wells would face #4 Cheraw and #2 Kit Carson would face #3 McClave. I have both Cheyenne Wells and Kit Carson winning advancing to the District finals and to Regionals. The third place game will be for the final spot to Regionals and that game will be between #3 McClave and #4 Cheraw. McClave beat Cheraw during the regular season by 13 points and I expect a similar win for McClave this time around. My 3 teams would be Cheyenne Wells, Kit Carson, and McClave. My District Champion is Cheyenne Wells. Also remember that Regionals is seeded all by RPI so winning the District Championship is bigger for RPI #’s than actual seeding.
District 3
District 3 is like District 2 as they are a 6-team league competing for 3 spots at Regionals. District 3 is also in Region 3 which features District 2, 3, and 6. The #1 and #2 seeds for District 3 get bye’s and 2 shots at making it to Regionals. Your #1 & #2 seeds are Holly and South Baca. The rest of the bracket is #4 Kim/Branson vs #5 Wiley, #3 Walsh vs #6 Springfield. I have #4 Kim/Branson and #3 Walsh both winning. #1 Holly would face #4 Kim/Branson and #2 South Baca would face #3 Walsh. I have both Holly and South Baca winning advancing to Regionals. The third place game would pit #3 Walsh vs #4 Kim/Branson. I am picking Walsh to win the third place game and advance to Regionals. My 3 team would be Holly, South Baca, and Walsh. My District Champion is Holly.
District 4
District 4 is a big 9 team district that only gets 3 spots in Regionals. District 4 is also a weird District that has teams from 3 different leagues so I am guessing this District Tournament will be seeded by RPI. District 4 competes in Region 2 which all three teams from District 4 could be favored to reach state. District 4 does a play-in game but I will start with just the seeding via RPI. #1 Peetz, #2 Heritage Christian, #3 Longmont Christian, #4 Caliche, #5 Fleming, #6 Prairie, #7 Briggsdale, #8 Pawnee, #9 Weldon Valley. The play-in game would feature #8 Pawnee vs #9 Weldon Valley and I am picking #8 Pawnee to win the play-in game. The main bracket would set up as: #1 Peetz vs #8 Pawnee, #4 Caliche vs #5 Fleming, #2 Heritage Christian vs #7 Briggsdale, #3 Longmont Christian vs #6 Prairie. I am picking, and the new matchups would be #1 Peetz vs #5 Fleming, #2 Heritage Christian vs #3 Longmont Christian. I am then going with #1 Peetz and #2 Heritage Christian to win and advance to Regionals and the third-place game would have #5 Fleming vs #3 Longmont Christian and I have Longmont Christian winning to advance to Regionals. My 3 teams would be Peetz, Heritage Christian, and Longmont Christian. My District Champion is Peetz.
District 5
District 5 is a 6-team district that will qualify 3 teams to Region 2. Region 2 has District 4, 5, and 7. District 5 gives their #1 and #2 teams bye’s and two shots at making it to Regionals. Your #1 and #2 seeds are Otis and Arickaree/Woodlin. Your bracket could be #4 Flagler/Hi Plains vs #5 Idalia, #3 Stratton/Liberty vs #6 Bethune. I have Stratton/Liberty and Flagler/Hi Plains winning. The new match-ups would be #1 Otis vs #4 Flagler/Hi Plains and #2 Arickaree/Woodlin vs #3 Stratton/Liberty. I am picking Otis and Arickaree/Woodlin to win and advance to Regionals. The third-place game would then feature #3 Stratton/Liberty vs #4 Flagler/Hi Plains. I am picking Stratton/Liberty to win and advance to regionals. My 3 teams would be Otis, Arickaree/Woodlin, and Stratton/Liberty. My District Champion is Otis.
District 6
District 6 last year only got 2 teams into regionals and will be happy to have another team qualify. District 6 is a monster 11 team District and has 3 teams with solid records and the battle for 3 spots will be a very good one. District 6 will compete in the loaded Region 3. District 6 will have 3 play-in games that will start on Monday of next week. The Top 5 seeds are all put into a 8 team bracket and the other 3 teams must win to have a shot at the main tournament. The top 5 seeds are Sierra Grande, Sangre De Cristo, Creede, Primero, and Cotopaxi. The play-in games will be #8 La Veta vs #9 Centennial, #7 Antonito vs #10 Moffat, #6 Manzanola vs #11 Aguilar. I am going with La Veta, Antonito, and Manzanola to all win to advance into the main bracket. The main bracket could be (Sierra Grande and Sangre De Cristo play each other tonight for the #1 and #2 seeds) #1 Sierra Grande vs #8 La Veta, #4 Primero vs #5 Cotopaxi, #2 Sangre De Cristo vs #7 Antonito, #3 Creede vs #6 Manzanola. I am picking Sierra Grande, Primero, Sangre De Cristo, and Creede to all win and advance into the semifinals. The new matchups would be #1 Sierra Grande vs #4 Primero, #2 Sangre De Cristo vs #3 Creede. I am picking Sierra Grande and Creede to win and advance to Regionals. The third place game would be Sangre De Cristo vs Primero and I am going with Sangre De Cristo to avenge their lose to Primero and advance to Regionals. My 3 teams would be Sierra Grande, Creede, and Sangre De Cristo. My District champion would be Sierra Grande.
District 7
District 7 is an 8 team normal tournament and I am guessing will be seeded by RPI. District 7 competes in Region 2. The seeds could be #1 Genoa-Hugo, #2 Elbert, #3 Kiowa, #4 Deer Trail, #5 Colorado DB, #6 Pikes Peak Christian, #7 Edison, #8 Hanover. The bracket could be #1 Genoa-Hugo vs #8 Hanover, #4 Deer Trail vs #5 Colorado DB, #3 Kiowa vs #6 Pikes Peak Christian, #2 Elbert vs #7 Edison. I am going with Genoa-Hugo, Deer Trail, Kiowa, and Elbert to win. The new matchups would be #1 Genoa-Hugo vs #4 Deer Trail and #2 Elbert vs #3 Kiowa. I am then picking Genoa-Hugo and Elbert to win and advance to Regionals. The third place game is between #3 Kiowa and #4 Deer Trail and I am picking #3 Kiowa to win and advance to Regionals. My 3 teams would be Genoa-Hugo, Elbert, and Kiowa and my District Champion is Genoa-Hugo.
District 8
District 8 is the big league this year that only gets 2 teams into Regionals, but those 2 teams will have a very good shot at making it to the State Tournament. District 8 #1 will face District 1 #2 and District 8 #2 will face District 1 #1. District 8 has already released their bracket and played their first games last night. The Pigtail round started with #8 Belleview Christian beating #9 Denver Academy of Torah 60-37. Belleview Christian advance to the main 8 team bracket. The 8 team bracket is #1 Front Range Baptist vs #8 Belleview Christian, #4 Denver Jewish Day vs #5 Denver Waldorf, #3 Shining Mountain vs #6 Rocky Mountain Lutheran, #2 Cornerstone Christian vs #7 Beth Eden. I am picking #1 Front Range Baptist, #4 Denver Jewish Day, #3 Shining Mountain, and #2 Cornerstone Christian to all advance. The next round would be #1 Front Range Baptist vs #4 Denver Jewish Day, #2 Cornerstone Christian vs #3 Shining Mountain. I have Front Range Baptist and Cornerstone Christian both winning and will advance to Regionals. My District champion would be Front Range Baptist.
Class 1A Boys Basketball Playoff Projections
Eight Districts, each qualifying two or three (as noted) to three regionals
The #1 and #2 seeds from District 1 and 8 will be paired in 2017-2018 while the #1, #2, and #3 seeds from District 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 will advance to a regional site. Region 2 (4, 5, 7) and Region 3 (2, 3, 6), the nine qualifying teams will be seeded by RPI, avoiding any previous district match-ups. In Region 1 District 1 and 8 #1s will play the other District #2s. Region 1 receives 2 state qualifiers, Region 2 and 3 receive three state qualifiers each.
