Class 1A Girls Basketball District Breakdown
Quick Note: Region 2 and Region 3 are seeded by RPI.
District 1
District 1 is a 5-team league that has 2 available spots for Regionals. They compete in Region 1 and this year will face District 8 in Region 1. District 1 appears to do a 4-team bracket with 1 play-in game. This year the play in game appears to be between Ouray vs Nucla. I am going to use RPI to seed the 3 other teams. #1 seed would be North Park, #2 seed is De Beque, #3 is Dove Creek. I am picking Ouray to beat Nucla and will face #1 North Park and #2 De Beque would face #3 Dove Creek. The two winners will advance to Regionals and the District winner will face the #2 team from District 8. My District Champion would be North Park and my runner up is De Beque.
District 2
District 2 is a 6-team league competing for 3 spots at Regionals. All District besides 1 and 8 get 3 teams to regionals. District 2 will compete in Region 3 and it’s a heavily loaded region. The #1 and #2 seeds in District 2 receive bye’s in the first round and gives them two shots at making regionals. The bracket would be #4 Cheyenne Wells vs #5 Cheraw, #3 Eads vs #6 Granada. I have Cheraw and Eads winning. #1 Kit Carson would face #4 Cheyenne Wells and #2 McClave would face #3 Eads. I have both Kit Carson and McClave winning advancing to the District finals and to Regionals. The third-place game will be for the final spot to Regionals and that game will be between #3 Eads and #4 Cheyenne Wells. I am giving Eads the win over Cheyenne Wells and snagging the 3rd spot. My 3 teams would be Kit Carson, McClave, and Eads. My District Champion is Kit Carson. Also remember that Regionals is seeded all by RPI so winning the District Championship is bigger for RPI #’s than actual seeding.
District 3
District 3 is like District 2 as they are a 6-team league competing for 3 spots at Regionals. District 3 is also in Region 3 which features District 2, 3, and 6. The #1 and #2 seeds for District 3 get bye’s and 2 shots at making it to Regionals. Your #1 & #2 seeds are Holly and Kim/Branson. The rest of the bracket is #4 Wiley vs #5 South Baca, #3 Springfield vs #6 Walsh. I have #3 Springfield & #5 South Baca winning. #1 Holly would face #5 South Baca and #2 Kim/Branson would face #3 Springfield. I have both Holly and Kim/Branson winning advancing to Regionals. The third-place game would pit #3 Springfield vs #5 South Baca. South Baca recently upset Springfield and could make this game very interesting. I am going with Springfield to squeeze out the tough win and snag a regional spot. My 3 teams would be Kim/Branson, Holly, and Springfield and Kim/Branson is my District Champion.
District 4
District 4 is a big 9 team district that only gets 3 spots in Regionals. District 4 is also a weird District that has teams from 3 different leagues, so I am guessing this District Tournament will be seeded by RPI. District 4 competes in Region 2 which all three teams from District 4 could be favored to reach state. District 4 does a play-in game, but I will start with just the seeding via RPI. #1 Fleming, #2 Briggsdale, #3 Heritage Christian, #4 Weldon Valley, #5 Longmont Christian, #6 Prairie, #7 Pawnee, #8 Caliche, #9 Peetz. The play-in game would feature #8 Caliche vs #9 Peetz and I am picking #8 Caliche to win the play-in game. The main bracket would set up as: #1 Peetz vs #8 Caliche, #4 Weldon valley vs #5 Longmont Christian, #2 Briggsdale vs #7 Pawnee, #3 Heritage Christian vs #6 Prairie. I am picking, and the new matchups would be #1 Fleming vs #4 Weldon Valley, #2 Briggsdale vs #3 Heritage Christian. I am then going with #1 Fleming and #2 Briggsdale to win and advance to Regionals and the third-place game would have #4 Weldon Valley vs #3 Heritage Christian and I have Heritage Christian winning to advance to Regionals. My 3 teams would be Fleming, Briggsdale, and Heritage Christian. My District Champion is Fleming.
District 5
District 5 is a 6-team district that will qualify 3 teams to Region 2. Region 2 has District 4, 5, and 7. District 5 gives their #1 and #2 teams bye’s and two shots at making it to Regionals. Your #1 and #2 seeds are Arickaree/Woodlin and Idalia. Your bracket could be #4 Otis vs #5 Stratton/Liberty, #3 Flagler/Hi Plains vs #6 Bethune. I have #3 Flagler/Hi Plains and #4 Otis winning. The new matchups would be #1 Arickaree/Woodlin vs #4 Otis and #2 Idalia vs #3 Flagler/Hi Plains. I am picking Arickaree/Woodlin and Idalia to win and advance to Regionals. The third-place game would then feature #3 Flagler/Hi Plains and #4 Otis. I am picking Flagler/Hi Plains to win and advance to regionals. My 3 teams would be Arickaree/Woodlin, Idalia, and Flagler/Hi Plains and my District Champion is Arickaree/Woodlin
District 6
District 6 last year only got 2 teams into regionals and will be happy to have another team qualify. District 6 is a monster 11 team District and has 3 teams with solid records and the battle for 3 spots will be a very good one. District 6 will compete in the loaded Region 3. District 6 will have 3 play-in games that will start on Monday of next week. The Top 5 seeds are all put into an 8-team bracket and the other 3 teams must win to have a shot at the main tournament. The top 5 seeds are Sierra Grande, Antonito, Sangre De Cristo, La Veta, and Cotopaxi. The play-in games will be #8 Centennial vs #9 Manzanola, #7 Creede vs #10 Moffat, #6 Primero vs #11 Aguilar. I am going with Centennial, Creede, and Primero to win and advance into the main bracket. The main bracket could be (Sierra Grande and Sangre De Cristo play each other tonight and could force a three-way tie for first) #1 Sierra Grande vs #8 Centennial, #4 La Veta vs #5 Cotopaxi, #2 Antonito vs #7 Creede, #3 Sangre De Cristo vs #6 Primero. I am picking Sierra Grande, La Veta, Antonito, and Sangre De Cristo to all win and advance into the semifinals. The new matchups would be #1 Sierra Grande vs #4 La Veta, #2 Antonito vs #3 Sangre De Cristo. I am picking Sierra Grande and Antonito to win and advance to Regionals. The third-place game would be Sangre De Cristo vs La Veta and I am going with Sangre De Cristo to advance to Regionals. My 3 teams would be Antonito, Sierra Grande, Sangre De Cristo and my District Champion is Antonito.
District 7
District 7 is an 8-team normal tournament and I am guessing will be seeded by RPI. District 7 competes in Region 2. The seeds could be #1 Genoa-Hugo, #2 Kiowa, #3 Edison, #4 Elbert, #5 Pikes Peak Christian, #6 Deer Trail, #7 Hanover, #8 Colorado DB. The bracket could be #1 Genoa-Hugo vs #8 Colorado DB, #4 Elbert vs #5 Pikes Peak Christian, #3 Edison vs #6 Deer Trail, #2 Kiowa vs #7 Hanover. I am going with Genoa-Hugo, Elbert, Edison, and Kiowa to win. The new matchups would be #1 Genoa-Hugo vs #4 Elbert and #2 Kiowa vs #3 Edison I am then picking Genoa-Hugo and Kiowa to win and advance to Regionals. The third-place game is between #3 Edison and #4 Elbert and I am picking #3 Edison to win and advance to Regionals. My 3 teams would be Genoa-Hugo, Kiowa, and Edison and my District Champion is Genoa-Hugo.
District 8
District 8 is the big league this year that only gets 2 teams into Regionals, but those 2 teams will have a very good shot at making it to the State Tournament. District 8 #1 will face District 1 #2 and District 8 #2 will face District 1 #1. District 8 has already released their bracket and they are playing a normal 8 team bracket. The Bracket is #1 Front Range Baptist vs #8 Denver Academy of Torah, #4 Belleview Christian vs #5 Rocky Mountain Lutheran, #3 Denver Jewish Day vs #6 Shining Mountain, #2 Cornerstone Christian vs #7 Beth Eden. These games all take place on Saturday Feb 17th. I am picking Front Range Baptist, Belleview Christian, Denver Jewish Day, and Cornerstone Christian to win. The matchups in the Semifinals would be #1 Front Range Baptist vs #4 Belleview Christian, #2 Cornerstone Christian vs #3 Denver Jewish Day. I am picking #1 Front Range Baptist and #2 Cornerstone Christian to win and advance to Regionals. My District Champion is Front Range Baptist.
Class 1A Girls Basketball Playoff Projections
Eight Districts, each qualifying two or three (as noted) to three regionals
The #1 and #2 seeds from District 1 and 8 will be paired in 2017-2018 while the #1, #2, and #3 seeds from District 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 will advance to a regional site. Region 2 (4, 5, 7) and Region 3 (2, 3, 6), the nine qualifying teams will be seeded by RPI, avoiding any previous district match-ups. In Region 1 District 1 and 8 #1s will play the other District #2s. Region 1 receives 2 state qualifiers, Region 2 and 3 receive three state qualifiers each.
