Football Opening Weekend Thoughts

football field 1

Opening weekend is in the books and what a start to the season it was.  A few upsets and a few teams starting with statement wins.
Class 2A is going to be very competitive this year. #1 Bayfield starts with a blasting of Farmington and are showing that they are going to be very tough to beat.  Also Bayfield is going to just improve as the year goes on.  #2 Platte Valley surges past Berthoud in the second half to capture the 16-0 victory.  Platte Valley defense is going to be tough this year.  Berthoud is also going to be a extremely tough team to beat this year and will also improve as the year goes.  Resurrection Christian beat a solid Sterling team and gave up just 3 points.  Salida defense is as good as advertised with a shutout and same for La Junta with a shutout win over Raton NM.

In Class 1A the first big surprise of the weekend happened when Meeker was upset by Aspen.  Aspen lost their QB who threw for over 2000 yards and have a new coach.  The win by Aspen makes me keep a closer eye on them in 2A.  Meeker lost some key pieces from last year’s team and will be looking to improve after a week 1 lose.  Crowley County and Strasburg picked up early wins and Wray may be a real threat blowing past Highland 41-8.

In 8-Man I may have to let some of the dust settle in the first couple weeks to really grasp what is going on. Holly was impressive in their first game handling Dayspring Christian 41-16, West Grand made quick work of Calhan 43-0, Merino played well against a tough Pikes Peak Christian team, and Caliche blasting Gilpin County 43-0. The surprises from the opening weekend are Akron upsetting Springfieild and Sanford surging past McClave (who loses just 2 seniors from last year’s team).

6-Man had just 1 game and it was a juggernaut of a battle. #3 Otis vs #5 Peetz and it lived up to the billing with Otis holding on to the 64-43 win over Peetz. Two take away’s from this game Otis is going to be tough for anyone they play this year and Peetz is just reloading this season and will be a threat.

Overall, I think the opening weekend had its fair share of surprises and also games going as planned. I will be posting my Top Ten Rankings for both Football and Volleyball on Monday plus my prediction results.
