Football Class 6-Man Week 3 Top Ten Breakdown

With nearly all 6-Man teams in action we got are first real taste of 6-Man Football.  There was plenty of upsets in week 2 and the Top 10 Rankings were shaken up quite a bit.  I expect more surprises as the season progresses.

#1 Stratton/Liberty (1-0)

Stratton/Liberty opened their 2018 campaign against #7 Prairie.  This was a very competitive game and the final score does not show just how close this game was.  Stratton/Liberty was winning 22 to 16 at halftime but Stratton/Liberty scored 14 unanswered points and started taking control of the game.  The final score was Stratton/Liberty 66 and Prairie 22 but as mentioned it was a very close game.  Stratton/Liberty did have some injuries in the game but had players step up.  Offensively Stratton/Liberty moved the ball extremely well racking up 433 yards of total offense.  The passing attack was led by Tyson Lichty who passed for 119 yards and 4 TDs.  The rushing attack had for 314 yards and was paced by Ethan Richmond 149 yards and 2 TDs.  Defensively Stratton/Liberty gave up 324 yards but were able to keep Prairie out of the end zone.  The Knighted Eagle were led in tackles by Trevor Frank (11 tackles) and Tyson Lichty (10 tackles).  Stratton/Liberty also had 7 sacks in the game, 2 Interceptions, and 4 fumbles recoveries.  Stratton/Liberty played bend but not break defense and will look to improve on their defense this week.  Stratton/Liberty this week will be on the road to face Hanover.  Hanover won their opening game against Cripple Creek 56-2.  This will be another good test for Stratton/Liberty due to Hanover being a playoff team from last year.

#2 Otis (1-0)

Otis had last week off after opening their season in week 1.  Otis did win their week 1 matchup against #4 Peetz 64-43.  Otis offensively was outstanding racking up 558 yards of total offense.  RB/QB Bryce Miracle had himself a game with 103 yards passing, 321 yards rushing, and 7 total TDs.  Ty Hunt also contributed with 107 yards passing and 3 TDs.  Otis will have a few things to fix on defense after giving up 43 points.  Otis was led by Landston Schaffert (9 tackles), Bryce Miracle (9 tackles), and Isaac Wells (9 tackles).  Otis also forced 2 fumbles and had 2 sacks.  Otis will have to improve on defense this week and going forward, but it does show heart for Otis after trailing early on.  Otis this week will face Genoa-Hugo.  Genoa-Hugo lost their opening game against Cheyenne Wells 43-24.  Otis will be the favorite in the game but cannot Genoa-Hugo.

#3 Kit Carson (1-0)

Kit Carson opened their 2018 season in a big way blowing pat La Veta 73 to 6.  Kit Carson was very effective offensively and had the mercy rule going by halftime.  Kit Carson also held La Veta to just 96 yards rushing and played extremely tough.  Kit Carson did not post any stats from the game, but thing should get much tougher this week.  Kit Carson will have their first road game against #6 Arickaree/Woodlin.  This will be Kit Carson first test this season and we should learn a lot more about Kit Carson after this game.

#4 Peetz (0-1)

Peetz had a bye last week and are looking to rebound after dropping their opening game to Otis 64-43.  Peetz defensively will have a few things to work on after giving up 558 yards of offense to Otis.  Peetz though did have success of their own on offense with Bryson long racking up 105 yards rushing and 3 TDs.  Peetz had a whole week to work on a few things and should be ready to play against their rival Fleming.  Peetz will have an early chance to snag a monster league win and get back to 1-1.  Peetz has a very tough schedule this year and they will be tested every game.  I could see Peetz bouncing back this week but improving their run defense will be key.

#5 Cheyenne Wells (1-0)

Cheyenne Wells opened their season against Genoa-Hugo who is a perennial playoff team.  Cheyenne Wells was trailing after the first quarter 18 to 12 but some adjustments were made, and Cheyenne Wells scored 31 unanswered points to take control of the game.  Cheyenne Wells would end up winning 43 to 24 and move to 1-0.  Cheyenne Wells defensively was torched through the air giving up 240 yards passing but held Genoa-Hugo to just 104 yards rushing.  Cheyenne Wells did start getting some pressure racking up 3 sacks, 1 Interceptions and forcing 4 fumbles in the game.  Jade Cozart led the defense with 14 tackles and Quade Pelton also had 14 tackles.  Offensively Cheyenne Wells was one dimensional with only 45 yards passing but had 320 yards rushing.  The rushing attack was led by Jade Cozart who ran for 229 yards and 4 TDs.  Cheyenne Wells does have some things to fix heading into their next game.  Cheyenne Wells will host #10 Idalia this week and this will be a very tough test for Cheyenne Wells.

#6 Arickaree/Woodlin (1-0)

Arickaree/Woodlin opened their 2018 season with a bang pulling a huge upset over Fleming.  Arickaree/Woodlin was able to grab the go-ahead touchdown by returning an interception for a touchdown and complete the upset.  Arickaree/Woodlin played solid defense all game holding Fleming to just 20 points, but I have a feeling Arickaree/Woodlin will need more points this week to pull yet another upset.  Arickaree/Woodlin will have their home open against #3 Kit Carson.  This game will test how quick Arickaree/Woodlin is and we will also know just how good Arickaree/Woodlin is.  Arickaree/Woodlin offense will probably need closer to 35 points this week to pull the upset.

#7 Prairie (0-1)

Prairie opened their 2018 season with a tough loss to #1 Stratton/Liberty 66 to 23.  Prairie kept it close at halftime but faltered late in the game.  Prairie offensively had over 300 yards of offense and some new leaders emerged for Prairie.  QB Mitch Dollerschell looks to have taken the QB role over passing for 138 yards, 2 TDs, but had 2 INTs.  The rushing attack was able to produce 174 yards rushing but no clear leader has emerged yet.  Trey Moore led all runner with 9 carries and Walter Jordan was #2 with 8 carries.  Offensively I could see Prairie improving weekly and will be tough come the end of the year.  Defensively the Mustangs did struggle to stop the run giving up 314 yards rushing.  Prairie will look to shore up their defense this week.  Prairie leading tackler was Carson Holzworth (8 tackles) and Devon Boling (7 tackles).  Prairie also had 5 sacks and 2 fumble recoveries in the game as well.  Prairie will now look to bounce back this week and that won’t be an easy task playing on the road against Briggsdale.  Briggsdale won their opening game against Sierra Grande 75-19.  This will be a good test for both teams and is also a huge league game.  Prairie is the favorite but will have to bring their A game.

#8 Fleming (0-1)

Fleming opened their 2018 campaign with a tough 26 to 20 lose to Arickaree/Woodlin.  Fleming now has little time to think about that lose as they play their rival Peetz.  Fleming will have to fix some things on their offense after only scoring 20 points in their first game.  Fleming did play well on defense holding Arickaree/Woodlin to under 30 points.   Fleming will be looking to bounce back and pull a massive upset over #4 Peetz.

#9 Flagler/Hi Plains (1-0)

Flagler/Hi Plains opened their 2018 season on the road playing Walsh.  Flagler/Hi Plains was in a tight battle trough halftime winning 25 to 13.  Flagler/Hi Plains took more control in the second half outscoring Walsh 37 to 12 in the second half.  Flagler/Hi Plains was able to get their offense going in the right direction racking up 420 yards of total offense.  The passing attack was led by Zayd Banks who threw for 155 yards and 2 TDs, but also had 2 INTs.  The rushing attack also did a good job racking up 244 yards and were led by Kyle Klann who ran for 118 yards and 3 TDs.  Flagler/Hi Plains must do a better job of taking care of the ball after giving up 3 turnovers.  Defensively Flagler/Hi Plains did a good job holding Walsh to just 25 points especially giving up 3 turnovers on offense.  The defense forced 3 turnovers themselves and were led by Chris Hile (15 tackles and 1.5 sacks) and Kyle Klann (10 tackles, 1 fumble, and 1 INT).  Flagler/Hi Plains will now face a playoff team from last year and should be a good test.  Flagler/Hi Plains will also be on the road and will face Edison.  Edison has not played a game this season but did qualify for the playoffs a year ago.  We will learn more about both teams after this week.

#10 Idalia (1-0)

Idalia also opened this season with a bang pulling an upset win over Granada.  This was a very high scoring game and came down to the end.  Idalia walked away with the 44 to 40 upset of Granada and put themselves into the Top 10.  Idalia offensively was able to run the ball effectively racking up 344 yards and averaging 7.5 yards per carry.  Idalia was led by Sam McGinnis (148 yards rushing and 3 TDs) and Yahir Enriquez (104 yards rushing and 2 TDs).  Idalia set the tone with their opening season win and now will hope to use their momentum going forward.  Idalia defensively will have a few things to work on after giving up 40 points but this was a good start for Idalia.  Idalia now is looking for their second straight upset as they go on the road to #5 Cheyenne Wells.  This game will feature two run heavy teams, and this could turn into a high scoring affair as well.  Idalia will have another really good shot to pull the upset and could come down to taking care of the ball.
