Class 1A Football Week 5 Top Ten Breakdown
A new #1 this week. Limon moves into the #1 spot after a huge road win over Meeker. Holyoke and C.S Christian drop a spot each. Strasburg and Florence move up a spot and Meeker drop to #6 following the loss. No other changes this week in Class 1A.
#1 Limon (3-0)
Limon title defense is off to a perfect start at 3-0. Limon has played two quality games this year and have two solid wins over Lamar and Meeker. Limon beat Meeker last week 42-28. Limon was up 35 to 14 entering the 4th quarter when Meeker made a small run to make the score 42-28. Limon offensively had a big day on the ground rushing for 283 yards. Kory Tacha (151 yards) and Jeremiah Leeper (105 yard) led all rushers. QB Trey Hines also had a productive day passing for 89 yards and had 4 total TDs on the day. Defensively Limon was able to stop the run holding Meeker to just 111 yards rushing. Limon pass defense did give up 352 yards passing but limited Meeker to just 2 touchdown passes. Up next for Limon is a huge battle against #4 Strasburg and a rematch of the state championship. This is a huge game for both teams. Limon will look to run the ball with success on offense and defensively will look to limit the rushing attack of Strasburg. This should be another good test for both teams.
#2 Holyoke (3-0)
Holyoke had a bye last week and were able to get healthy and prepare for a top ten matchup against #10 Highland. Holyoke offensively has been able to both run the ball and pass the ball. QB Miles Sprague is off to a solid start with 468 yards passing and 2 TDs but he does have 3 INTs. The rushing attack for Holyoke has had plenty of success. Holyoke has rushed for 397 yards and are led by Blake Mosenteen who has 210 yards rushing and 4 TDs. This will be a great test for Holyoke this week. Holyoke must be able to stop the run on defense and force Highland to pass. Offensively they will be tested by a tough defense. This will be Holyoke second top 10 matchup of the season.
#3 C.S Christian (2-1)
C.S Christian is on a two-game winning streak and moved to 2-1 on the season after blasting Platte Canyon 41-0. C.S Christian has not played the toughest schedule in the non-league season but have a quality win over Peyton two weeks ago. Last week C.S Christian dominated offensively passing for 138 yards and rushing for 339 yards. QB Caleb Stockton had a solid day as did RB Joe Dunn (190 yards rushing). C.S Christian schedule won’t really toughen up until 10/11 when they jump into league play against Buena Vista. The next two games for C.S Christian are against Ellicott and Ignacio both should not really test C.S Christian but it allows for C.S Christian to continue to fix any holes and adjust before moving into league play.
#4 Strasburg (3-0)
Strasburg had a bye last week and are 3-0 on the season. Strasburg opened the season with 3 quality victories over University, Burlington, and Bennett. Strasburg offensively has been able to run the ball with plenty of success, but the passing attack is a big part of the offense as well. QB Collin Russell is off to a solid start with 354 yards passing and 3 TDs. The rushing attack is led by Trystan Graf (280 yards) and Michael Burns (181 yards). Strasburg defensively has played back to back outstanding games holding both opponents under 7 points. Up next for Strasburg is a rematch of the state championship against #1 Limon. This will be the toughest matchup for Strasburg to date and will test this defense. Strasburg defensively must be able to stop the run and force Limon to pass the ball. Offensively Strasburg must take care of the ball and have a big day from their rushing attack. This will be a great game and looking forward to seeing who comes out on top.
#5 Florence (3-0)
Florence is 3-0 on the season and picked up a huge win on the road against Monte Vista 48-19. Florence dominated the game offensively rushing for 397 yards on 40 carries or 9.9 yards a carry. Owen Busetti had a massive game rushing for 196 yards and 5 TDs. Defensively Limon was able to limit Monte Vista to 223 yards rushing and 146 yards passing but forced 2 turnovers which were difference makers in the game. Florence has proven they are a team to watch early in the season. Up next for Florence is a home game against Trinidad. I don’t see Florence really being tested by Trinidad and Florence should dominate and be ready to open league play against Rye who is 4-0 and on a bye week this week.
#6 Meeker (3-1)
Meeker picked up their first loss of the season going down to #1 Limon at home 42-28. Limon was up 35-14 after the third quarter but Meeker showed a burst to tighten the game up at 42-28. Meeker has a bye this week to fix the mistakes of the defense and get healthy before jumping into league play. Meeker defensively will have a few things to work on after giving up 283 yards rushing. Offensively Meeker had plenty of production from QB Ryan Phelan but the rushing attack was limited. Meeker I am sure will work hard to fix the mistakes and be ready for league play. Meeker opens league plays against Grand Valley next week.
#7 Centauri (2-1)
Centauri moved to 2-1 on the season with a 41-0 victory over Olathe. Centauri was able to have a big day on offense passing for 117 yards and rushing for 257 yards. The rushing attack was led by RB Mason Claunch who had 173 yards rushing and 3 TDs. QB Eric Maez had another solid day passing for 117 yards and 2 TDs. Offensively Centauri was able to bounce back after losing to Pagosa the following week. Up next for Centauri is a huge match up against Buena Vista. Buena Vista is 3-0 on the season but have not really played a tough schedule so far with wins against Salida, Cedaredge, and Platte Canyon. This will be the true first test for Buena Vista. Defensively Centauri must be able to stop both the run and pass. Look for Centauri to force Buena Vista to throw the ball against the speed that Centauri has. Offensively Centauri will be tested by a Buena Vista defense that has given up just 20 points so far this season. This will be a good test for both teams who enter league play next week.
#8 Paonia (2-1)
Paonia moved to 2-1 on the season and escaped last week with a 17-14 victory over Coal Ridge. That is now back to back wins with the score of 17-14. Paonia offensively struggled to get much going racking up just 144 yards of total offense. Paonia offensively has not had a break out game yet this season. Defensively Paonia was able to limit the run heavy offense of Coal Ridge to just 155 yards. Paonia now will face another huge test against Basalt. Basalt is a 2A team who is off to a 3-0 start and are playing really good football. Basalt has not played the toughest schedule but Basalt picked up a big 39-19 victory over Pagosa Springs last week. This will be a very tough matchup for Paonia and they must get their offense going. Paonia defensively must be able to stop a balanced offensive attack but this will be another big test for Paonia.
#9 Rye (4-0)
Rye was able to move to 4-0 on the season and escaped with the 13-12 victory over Rocky Ford last week. Rye was able to slow down the passing attack of Rocky Ford holding them to 98 yards. Rye did struggle stopping Rocky Ford rushing attack who ran for 154 yards, but Rye did force 3 turnovers in the game. Offensively Rye had 173 yards of total offense. Rye struggled offensively but were able to escape with the win. Rye has a bye this week to prepare for their league opener against Florence. This will really test how much Rye has improved.
#10 Highland (2-1)
Highland moved to 2-1 on the season picking up an impressive 27-0 victory over 2A Valley. Highland had a great day on defense holding Valley to just 107 yards of offense. Highland had big days on defense by Hector Flores and Blake Fabrizius. Highland offensively had a solid day. QB Sam Hnizdil threw for 79 yards and 0 INTs. The rushing attack had 276 yards rushing and were led by RB Holden Morgan who had 147 yards rushing and 2 TDs. Up next for Highland is a top ten battle against #2 Holyoke. This will be the toughest game Highland has played up to this point. Highland defensively will have to stop a balanced offensive attack. Offensively Highland must be able to run the ball to have success. This will be another great test for Highland.
