6-Man Football Week 5 League Breakdown

We move to League Breakdowns for 8-man and 6-man with both classes starting league play.  We will update who we think will win their respective leagues plus look at some of the big matchups inside the league and of course show the RPI of the teams in the league.  I will update my League Predictions this last time and pick who I think will win player of the league.  I will update the contenders weekly as those will change based on results and RPI.  Also, this year I plan on doing League Awards along with my Yearly Overall Awards!

Central League

The Central league is off to a very interesting start with the team who I thought was favored to win off to a 0-4 start.  Currently 3 teams are at or above .500.  Deer Trail, Hanover, and Colorado D&B are the teams at or above .500.  Edison has not opened league play and the preseason favorite to win the Central League Genoa-Hugo is off to a 0-4 start, but we will see how they bounce back.  Two games inside the Central this week Edison vs Deer Trail and Genoa-Hugo vs Hanover.  Both are very interesting games.  Genoa-Hugo vs Hanover will determine a ton for this league.  Genoa-Hugo is 0-4 and need a win desperately and I think a loss to Hanover would eliminate any hopes of a playoff berth and a league title.  Hanover has a chance to try and keep pace with Deer Trail or even take over the top spot in league.  We will have to see which team rises to the occasion.  The other game is Edison vs Deer Trail.  Edison has not started league play and is 1-3 on the season.  They picked up their first win of the season over Cripple Creek last week 54-20.  This week they will be hoping to get off on the right foot in league and pull a huge upset.  Deer Trail is 1-0 in league and have a big win over Genoa-Hugo.  A win over Edison keeps them in control of their own destiny.  Deer Trail is hoping to get their rushing attack going and control the game.  A win by Deer Trail and a loss by Hanover could put them in complete control of the Central League.

Updated League Predictions:

League Champion: Deer Trail

Player of the League: RB Walker Morelock Sr. Deer Trail

Playoff Contenders: Deer Trail, Genoa-Hugo, Hanover

RPI: Hanover (16), Deer Trail (18), Edison (23), Colorado D&B (26), Genoa-Hugo (27)

East Central League

The East Central league is off to a slow start as a whole with just 2 of the 5 teams with .500 records and two of the 5 teams have not won a game so far this year.  Stratton/Liberty and Flagler/Hi Plains are the two teams above .500 with Otis, Aricakree/Woodlin, and Idalia all chasing the top teams.  Only 1 league game has been played in the East Central and it really kicks off league play this week.  Two games are on schedule for the East Central League Otis at Stratton/Liberty and Idalia at Flagler/Hi Plains.  We will talk about both games.  Otis vs Stratton/Liberty was nearly the league championship a year ago but things have changed this year.  Otis is off to a 1-3 start and lost to Flagler/Hi Plains last week 81-22.  Otis has a lot of inexperienced players and it is showing this year.  Stratton/Liberty is finally back at full strength with Jaret Lichty back from injury.  Stratton/Liberty since losing their opener have won 3 straight games including quality wins over Prairie and Peetz.  Stratton/Liberty should be able to dominate in this game but don’t expect Otis just to lay over.  The other game in the East Central league is Idalia vs Flagler/Hi Plains.  Idalia was expected to be one of the main teams in the East Central league but a very tough non-league schedule including 3 top 10 opponents has started them off 0-4.  Last week Idalia lost to Briggsdale 70-39 but this was the most points scored by Idalia this year.  We will see if they have improved heading into their first league matchup.  Flagler/Hi Plains is off to a perfect 4-0 start with just one quality win over Briggsdale 40-39.  Flagler/Hi Plains has not really been tested in the non-league schedule and we will see how they play against a tougher opponent this week.

Updated League Predictions:

League Champion: Stratton/Liberty

Player of the League: RB Jaret Lichty Jr. Stratton/Liberty

Playoff Contenders: Stratton/Liberty, Flagler/Hi Plains, Idalia, Arickaree/Woodlin, Otis

RPI: Stratton/Liberty (1), Flagler/Hi Plains (5), Arickaree/Woodlin (19), Otis (21), Idalia (22)

North League

The North League is once again proving to be one of the toughest leagues in 6-man once again.  5 of the 6 teams inside the North league are .500 or above.  Most teams have played at least 1 game if not two league games.  Currently Fleming and Prairie sit at 2-0 in league and in early control.  Peetz sits at 1-1 and Briggsdale and North Park are at 0-1.  Expect this league to be very competitive till the end.  3 gams are on the schedule for the North League.  Briggsdale vs Weldon Valley, North Park vs Peetz, and Prairie vs Fleming.  Two big games to talk about this week.  Game #1 is North Park vs Peetz.  Peetz is 2-2 on the season but are on a two-game losing streak losing to Fleming and Stratton/Liberty on back to back weeks.  Peetz has a lot of inexperience but do have some leadership with Cooper White leading the offense.  Peetz needs to have a big day from Cooper White if they expect to pull a huge upset this week.  North Park is 3-1 on the season and picked up their first loss of the season last week losing to Prairie 54-32.  Defensively North Park struggled stopping the passing attack of Prairie giving up 281 yards passing, and 6 TDs and they will look to fix their pass defense this week.  Offensively North Park had a decent day passing for 129 yards and rushing for 245 yards, but 3 lost fumbles hurt their chances in this game.  North Park will look to fix a few things heading into their second league game.  The main event in the North League is #5 Prairie at #2 Fleming.  This is a huge game not just for league but also come playoff time.  Prairie is 3-1 on the season with their lone loss coming to #4 Stratton/Liberty.  Prairie is on a solid two game winning streak and both were league wins.  Prairie picked up a huge win over North Park last week and were led by QB Mitch Dollerschell who threw for 281 yards and 6 TDs.  He may be needed again this week to have a big game.  The rushing attack must also get going if they plan to upset Fleming.  Defensively Prairie must be able to stop the run this week and force a few turnovers as well.  #2 Fleming is 4-0 on the season but are lacking a quality opponent.  Fleming has scored over 48 points in all 4 games and have dominated all four opponents.  Fleming offensively likes to run the ball first and are led by RB Brandon Williams.  The passing attack is solid as well just not used as much.  Fleming will finally have their first test and it’s a big one.

Updated League Predictions:

League Champion: Fleming

Player of the League: RB Brandon Williams Sr. Fleming HS

Playoff Contenders: Fleming, Prairie, North Park, Briggsdale, Peetz

RPI: Prairie (2), North Park (7), Fleming (9), Briggsdale (11), Peetz (14), Weldon Valley (28)

South Central League

The South Central league has just one team with a winning record.  Branson/Kim is the lone team with a winning record in the South Central league and control their own fate.  Branson/Kim picked up a huge win over Manzanola last week and a win over La Veta this week will essentially lock up the league title for Branson/Kim.  Branson/Kim has been a huge surprise this year with quality wins over Deer Trail and Sierra Grande.  Branson/Kim has been led by their rushing attack which has churned out 854 yards and led by Finn Warner who has 490 yards rushing and 8 TDs.  Manzanola is another team to mention in the South Central league they are 1-3 and have a must win game against Primero this week.  Manzanola still has a shot at the playoffs but will have to win out and a win over Primero is big start.

Updated League Predictions:

League Champion: Branson/Kim

Player of the League: RB Finn Warner Sr. Branson/Kim

Playoff Contenders: Branson/Kim and Manzanola

RPI: Branson/Kim (3), Manzanola (17), La Veta (25), Primero (29)

South East League

The second most competitive league in 6-man is the South East league with 5 of the 6 teams over or at .500 and 3 of them are still undefeated.  Most team in the league have played two games.  Cheyenne Wells, Kit Carson, and Granada are all sitting undefeated in league.  Walsh sits in 4th at 1-1 with Cheraw and Eads tied at 0-2 in 5th and 6th.  Kit Carson moved to 2-0 in league last night picking up the 61-20 victory over Cheraw.  One other league game remains in the South East League and it’s a big one.  #9 Granada hits the road to take on #3 Cheyenne Wells.  Granada is off to a 4-0 start and have really had to work for most of their victories.  Granada last week held off Arickaree/Woodlin 36-30 and the week before beat Eads 54-46.  Most of Granada victors have come under 10 points and most came down to the wire.  Granada has been a run first team racking up 999 yards rushing with QB Dominic Coleman leading the way at 696 yards rushing.  Dominic Coleman is also the QB and has 481 yards passing to help keep the offense balanced.  Granada will be facing their toughest opponent to date and we will see how they play.  Cheyenne Wells is also off to a 4-0 start and picked up a tough 37-18 victory over Walsh last week.  Cheyenne Wells offensively would like to run first but their passing attack is still good to keep defenses off balanced.  RB Quade Pelton leads the offense rushing for 515 yards and throwing for another 248 yards.  Pelton has 15 TDs so far this season.  Adding to the offensive attack is RB Cade Mitchek who has helped the offense keep teams off balanced rushing for 441 yards and 7 TDs. This will be a very tough test for Cheyenne Wells and will also be their first Top 10 opponent of the season.

Updated League Predictions:

League Champion: Kit Carson

Player of the League: RB/QB Quade Pelton Sr. Cheyenne Wells

Playoff Contenders: Kit Carson, Cheyenne Wells, Granada, Walsh, Cheraw, Eads

RPI: Kit Carson (4), Granada (6), Cheyenne Wells (8), Walsh (10), Eads (12), Cheraw (15)

South West league

The South West league got underway last week with a huge game.  Cotopaxi was able to beat Mountain Valley 47-33 to grab control of the league.  Cotopaxi is now 3-1 on the season and control their own destiny.  Cotopaxi plays Cripple Creek this week and Cotopaxi should dominate that game.  Cotopaxi will then face a huge non-league test against Branson/Kim next week.  The league title will probably be decided for Cotopaxi on 10/11 when they face Sierra Grande.  Mountain Valley is now 0-1 in league and 1-3 on the year.  They should be back at full strength this week and have a huge game against Sierra Grande.  Mountain Valley is in a must win game to have any shot at the league title.  A win by Mountain Valley and if Sierra Grande can upset Cotopaxi will give them a piece of the league title.  Mountain Valley also is looking to win out the rest of the year to make a run for a playoff spot.  Sierra Grande has not opened league play yet and are 2-2 on the year.  Sierra Grande with a win over Mountain Valley will keep pace with Cotopaxi atop the standings.  Sierra Grande will face another tough opponent and we will see if the tough games in the non-league season prepared them for this game.  This will be a very good game and has huge implications.

Updated League Predictions:

League Champion: Cotopaxi

Player of the League: RB Elijah Roberts Sr. Mountain Valley

Playoff Contenders: Cotopaxi, Sierra Grande, Mountain Valley

RPI: Cotopaxi (13), Sierra Grande (20), Mountain Valley (24), Cripple Creek (30)
