Class 2A Football Week 8 League Breakdown

For Class 2A thru 6-Man I plan on doing league awards to give more recognition to teams who don’t make it to the playoffs.  I did this for Basketball last year.  We move into the third week of the league season this week.  RPI is also starting to become a factor with us in October.

Colorado League

Things inside the Colorado League took an interesting turn with an upset and a big result.  Last week Englewood solidified first place beating Kent Denver 31-21.  Englewood now sits alone in first place in the Colorado League.  The big upset was Riverdale Ridge beating Machebeuf 15-12.  The upset win by Riverdale Ridge keeps them in contention and really mixes up the Colorado League.  This week inside the Colorado League we have Alameda at Englewood, Kent Denver at Riverdale Ridge, and Machebeuf at Ridgeview Academy.  Alameda at Englewood should be a victory for Englewood and continue to keep them in first place at 3-0.  Machebeuf at Ridge View Academy should be a win for Machebeuf.  Machebeuf cannot drop another game and hope to make a push for a playoff spot.  This is a must win game for Machebeuf! The game to really talk about his Kent Denver vs Riverdale Ridge.  Kent Denver has been in rebuild mode this year.  Kent Denver is 2-4 on the year but have played teams tough.  Kent Denver sits at 32nd in the RPI and would need to win out plus get some help to get into the playoffs.  Kent Denver with a win over Riverdale Ridge is the right start for them but this is a must win game for Kent Denver.  Riverdale Ridge surprised me with the big upset win over Machebeuf.  Riverdale Ridge threw a huge wrench into the mix and now are hoping to make a push for a playoff spot.  Riverdale Ridge sits at 25th in the RPI and winning out is a must if they plan to get into the playoffs.  They possibly will need some help to get in but must take care of their own by winning.  Riverdale Ridge is still in the hunt for a league title as well but would need someone to upset Englewood to force a tie.  This is a huge match for Kent Denver and Riverdale Ridge.

Playoff Contenders: Englewood, Riverdale Ridge, Machebeuf, Kent Denver

RPI: Englewood (9), Riverdale Ridge (25), Machebeuf (28), Kent Denver (32), Ridge View Academy (40), Alameda (41)

Flatirons League

Three teams sit atop the Flatirons league at 2-0 they are Faith Christian, Bennett, and D’Evelyn.  4 teams are still in the hunt for the playoffs and the Flatirons League looks to be a very competitive race to the end this year.  Last week the top 3 teams in the league beat the bottom 3 teams and I can eliminate Denver West and Middle Park for the playoff race.  Arvada still has hope for the playoffs but it’s crunch time for Arvada.  This week inside the Flatirons league we have Arvada at D’Evelyn, Bennett at Faith Christian, and Middle Park at Denver West.  Really two games to talk about this week.  Arvada at D’Evelyn is a huge game to get us started.  Arvada is 3-3 on the season and have now dropped three straight games.  They are 0-2 in league and possibly out of the league title race.  An at-large berth is the one thing they must fight for and they sit at #16 in the RPI.  Arvada is in must win territory this week because a loss this week probably catapults D’Evelyn over them.  Arvada will look for their defense to really step up this week and get them a victory.  D’Evelyn is sitting at 21 in the RPI and 2-0 in league.  They play three straight tough games and probably need 2 of the 3 to feel comfortable to get into the playoffs.  D’Evelyn though must focus on this week’s opponent who has played both Faith Christian and Englewood tough. D’Evelyn offensively will be tested and QB Shane Bishop must have a big game.  D’Evelyn needs this win to move them up the RPI and also to give them some confidence heading into their matchups against Bennett and Faith Christian.  Bennett vs Faith Christian is the main event inside the Flatirons League.  Bennett is 4-2 on the year and are on a two-game winning streak.  Bennett will be looking to pull a huge upset off this week.  Offensively Bennett must be able to run the ball to have success.  Mac Copeland must have a big game for Bennett this week.  Defensively Bennett will also look to stop the run and force Faith Christian into more passing.  If Bennett can snag the win the keep a share of first place and take over as the favorite to win the Flatirons League.  Faith Christian has won 5 straight games and have really started playing better football.  Faith Christian seems to be fully healthy with both top RBs.  Faith Christian can keep a share of the league lead with a win.  Faith Christian offensively will hope their running game will lead the way but also look for QB Isiah Kroll to step up if needed.  Defensively stopping Bennett rushing attack will be key.  This is a huge matchup for both teams.

Updated League Predictions:

Playoff Contenders: Faith Christian, D’Evelyn, Bennett, Arvada,

RPI: Faith Christian (12), Bennett (15), Arvada, (16), D’Evelyn (21), Denver West (36), Middle Park (37)

Intermountain League

The IML League has 3 teams hoping to reach the playoffs and hoping to win the league title.  Bayfield, Pagosa Springs, and Alamosa are all in the hunt for the playoffs and the league title.  Bayfield and Pagosa Springs sit atop the league standings undefeated with Alamosa at 1-1.  RPI wise the IML is not sitting great with no teams in the Top 16.  I do think a few wins by the top teams this week and we see a team make a jump.  The IML league has two games this week and they are Salida at Alamosa and Bayfield at Montezuma-Cortez.  Bayfield vs Montezuma-Cortez is a big game for Bayfield to keep pace with Pagosa Springs.  I don’t see Bayfield being upset by Montezuma-Cortez, but you just never know.  I do think a win by Bayfield will move their RPI up quite a bit.  Alamosa vs Salida is a huge game.  Salida has had a very tough season this year at 0-6.  They have at times shown their offense can be explosive.  Salida will be looking for a huge upset this week.  Salida is just about eliminated from the playoffs and a loss this week would do it.  Alamosa is hoping the win last week has them pointed in the right direction.  Alamosa is sitting at 24 in the RPI and probably need to win out to get into the playoffs.  I will have to look at their RPI more in depth to see and I will next week.  Alamosa cannot lose to Salida and expect to get into the playoffs this is a due or die game for Alamosa as well.

Playoff Contenders: Bayfield, Pagosa Springs, Alamosa

RPI: Pagosa Springs (23), Alamosa (24), Bayfield (26), Montezuma-Cortez (35), Salida (38)

Patriot East League

The League title is possibly on the line in the Patriot East league this week when Sterling and Platte Valley clash.  Looking back at last week we see Sterling beating Brush, Weld Central over Valley, and Platte Valley over Fort Lupton.  These results have Sterling and Platte Valley at 2-0 atop the standing and Brush and Weld Central tied at 1-1 in second.  This week we could see some of the ties broken.  Games inside the Patriot East this week are Valley at Brush, Fort Lupton at Weld Central, and Sterling at Platte Valley.  Weld Central vs Fort Lupton should be a win for Weld Central and keep them in second place at 2-1.  Weld Central cannot lose to Fort Lupton and expect to make the playoffs.  Valley at Brush is a very intriguing matchup.  Valley is 3-3 on the year but have lost two straight since entering league play.  Valley is sitting at #29 in the RPI and desperately need a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.  Valley with a loss to Brush possibly could be eliminated from the playoff chase.  Look for Valley to play with some intensity this week.  Brush is 2-4 overall and 1-1 in league and sit at #30 in the RPI.  Like Valley, Brush is fighting for their playoff lives this week and need to probably win 2 of their final 3 games to have a shot.  Brush cannot loss this week and look for them to play with some passion.  Brush will look to RB/LB Nick Wellen to lead them this week.  This is a due or die game for both teams and should be a great game.  The main event in Class 2A this week is Platte Valley hosting Sterling.  This is a top 5 matchup between two of the best teams in Class 2A.  The league title could possibly be decided this week.  Platte Valley has not lost to a 2A team this year and their lone loss was to 3A Lutheran.  Platte Valley offensively has been balanced in their attack.  QB Kade McDaniel has performed well in his first year at QB throwing for 417 yards and 6 TDs.  The rushing attack for Platte Valley has been impressive with Josh Yancey leading the way with 559 yards rushing and 5 TDs.  Platte Valley will need big performances from both players to pull the upset.  Sterling is 5-1 on the year and have not lost to a Colorado team this year.  Sterling lone loss of the year came to Scottsbluff NE who is the #1 team in the entire state of Nebraska.  Sterling has some key wins as well but this will be a huge test for them.  Offensively Sterling struggled a bit out of the gate but have picked it up as of late.  QB Brock Shalla continues to lead this team.  RB Conner Polenz and WR Tucker Myers have also stepped up to help Sterling offensively.  Defensively Sterling has been one of the best in the state.  This will be a great test for both teams.  This game will effect the league standing and playoff seeding.

Playoff Contenders: Sterling, Platte Valley, Weld Central, Brush, Valley

RPI: Sterling (1), Platte Valley (5), Weld Central (17), Valley (29), Brush (30), Fort Lupton (39)

Patriot West League

Two teams sit atop the Patriot West League standings and they are Resurrection Christian and Eaton.  Resurrection Christian moved to 2-0 beating University 56-12 and Eaton moved to 2-0 beating The Academy 27-9. Sitting in second place now is The Academy and Berthoud both are 1-1.  University sits at 0-2 but still very much in the hunt for the playoffs.  This week inside the Patriot West league we have The Academy at Berthoud, University at Prospect Ridge, and Eaton at Resurrection Christian.  University at Prospect Ridge is a big game for both teams.  Prospect Ridge is in desperate need of a win and have dropped two straight games.  Prospect Ridge is #34 in the RPI and if they cannot upset University will be eliminated from the playoff hunt.  University is sitting at 2-4 overall and have dropped 3 straight tough games.  University cannot lose this week and probably the rest of the year.  University will be looking to make a big run at the end of the year.  University has played a brutal non-league schedule but now look for them to make their run.  The Academy at Berthoud is a make or break game for both teams.  Berthoud picked up their first win of the season over Prospect Ridge.  This was a much-needed momentum boost for this team and now they are hoping to have a huge run to end the year.  Berthoud sits at #31 in the RPI but winning 2 of their final 3 games probably gives them a shot at the playoffs.  Berthoud this week will be tested on defense by a pass heavy offense and we will see how they respond.  The Academy is 4-2 on the season and playing well so far.  The Academy lost last week to Eaton but played tough.  The Academy is sitting at #19 in the RPI and in the mix for a playoff spot.  They have three tough games to end the year and cannot afford to drop this game to Berthoud.  The Academy will look to QB Brandon Boston to lead the way and this defense must be on top of their game.  The Academy with a win stays in second place and stay in good position for a playoff berth.  The main event inside the Patriot West is Resurrection Christian hosting Eaton.  This is probably the second-best game in Class 2A and possibly could be a league title game.  Eaton is 4-2 on the year and have won 3 straight games.  Eaton has played a tough non-league schedule and opened league with a tough schedule as well.  Eaton has been lead by their defense this year and will hope they can come up big this week.  QB Scott Grable must put together his best game this season.  Eaton has proven they can hang with any team losing to Platte Valley by 4 and Sterling by 7.  Eaton will be looking for their biggest win of the season and will need their leaders to really step up.  Resurrection Christian is 5-1 on the season with their lone loss to Sterling in OT.  Resurrection Christian has played a tough schedule this season and seem to have found their offensive groove.  QB Buck Coors has really become the leader this offense has needed, and his improved play has Resurrection Christian looking like a title contender.  Defensively this team has been lights out.  Resurrection Christian has allowed 47 points this year and have not given up over 20 points.  This will be a good test for this defense again.  I see this game turning into a defensive struggle and should be a great game.  The League title and Playoff seeding are on the line in this game.

Playoff Contenders: Resurrection Christian, Eaton, University, The Academy, Berthoud

RPI: Resurrection Christian (2), Eaton (6), The Academy (19), University (22), Berthoud (31), Prospect Ridge (34)

Tri-Peaks League

The Tri-Peaks continue their crazy start of the league season.  Two teams sit atop the standing they are Elizabeth and Classical Academy.  Lamar and La Junta sit in second at 1-1 and Woodland Park and Manitou Springs sit at 0-2 at the bottom.  Things are still very much in the air but we could see a bit of clarity after this weeks games.  This week inside the Tri-Peaks we have La Junta at Lamar, Elizabeth at Classical Academy, and Manitou Springs at Woodland Park.  Woodland Park vs Manitou Springs is huge for Woodland Park.  Woodland Park is sitting at 3-3 overall and #20 in the RPI.  A loss to Manitou Springs will probably end their playoff hopes.  A win helps set Woodland Park in the right direction but needing probably one more win.  La Junta vs Lamar is a big rivalry game.  It also has big implications for the league title race and possibly the playoffs.  La Junta is coming off a tough 7-6 loss to Elizabeth.  La Junta had an extra point blocked that was the difference in the game.  La Junta has a few key injuries heading into this week’s game and could be a big difference maker.  La Junta will need their defense to play outstanding this week and hope their offense can come along.  Lamar is coming off an impressive 56-19 victory over Woodland Park.  Lamar played well against an improved Woodland Park team.  Lamar would like nothing more than to beat La Junta, but it won’t be easy.  Offensively Zane Rankin will need to play one of his best games and Walker Kee must get the ground game going.  Lamar offense will truly be tested by La Junta defense.  Defensively Lamar must shutdown La Junta offense.  Stopping the run is key and we will see how they do.  The main event inside the Tri-Peaks league is Classical Academy hosting Elizabeth.  Elizabeth pulled off the upset last week beating La Junta 7-6.  Elizabeth defense was able to limit La Junta to just 6 points and the big special teams play help them win the game.  Elizabeth this week must be able to stop the run if they plan to have success.  Elizabeth offensively must get things turned around after scoring just 7 points.  Look for QB Vincent Weber to have a break out game if Elizabeth plan to upset TCA.  Classical Academy seems to have found its stride winning two straight games.  TCA has played a tough schedule so far this season and we will see if it has them ready for the tough stretch of games ahead.  TCA with a win over Elizabeth can nearly lock up the league title.  RB Cade Palmer must have a big game for TCA.  Also, look for improved QB play from Sam Guilez to help the TCA offense.  TCA defensively will be focusing on a dual threat QB and they must find some success.  This is a huge game that will go along way of deciding the Tri-Peaks League title and playoff seeding.

Playoff Contenders: Classical Academy, Lamar, Elizabeth, La Junta, Woodland Park

RPI: Elizabeth (7), Lamar (8), Classical Academy (11), La Junta (14), Woodland Park (20), Manitou Spring (33)

Western Slope League

Two teams remain atop the Western Slope League standings and they are Basalt and Rifle.  Rifle picked up a huge win over Delta 47-29 to snag the first of many tough victories.  Basalt kept pace with Rifle beating Coal Ridge 34-0.  Aspen also stayed in second place beating Moffat County 28-0.  This week inside the Western Slope League we have Coal Ridge at Moffat County, Rifle at Aspen, and Basalt at Delta.  Coal Ridge vs Moffat County is a big game for both teams.  Both sit a 0-2 and are desperate for a league win.  Coal Ridge is #27 in the RPI and a loss to Moffat County will eliminate them for the playoff chase.  Moffat County is #13 in the RPI and a loss to Coal Ridge will drop them way down in the RPI.  Both teams will be desperate for a win.  Rifle vs Aspen features two teams coming off big wins.  Aspen picked up a big win over Moffat County last week 28-0.  The win keeps Aspen playoff hopes alive.  Aspen sits at #18 in the RPI and a loss to Rifle won’t hurt their RPI.  For Aspen to get into the playoff though they will have to for sure win next weeks game and possibly their final game of the year against Basalt.  Rifle picked up the massive win over Delta 47-29.  Rifle is now two wins away from the league title.  Rifle has had a break out year from RB Levi Warfel and he must continue to dominate this year.  Rifle is in the running for a top 3 seed for the playoffs and must continue to win.  They will be tested by a tough Aspen team and we will see how they handle a pass heavy offense.  The main event in the Western Slope League is Delta hosting Basalt.  Delta will be coming off their first loss of the season.  We will see how Delta bounces back from the tough loss to Rifle.  I think the leadership of Delta should get them going back on the right track, but they have a tough test this week.  Delta defensively will have to be able to stop the run to be effective and they are facing a solid QB this week.  Offensively Delta must fix the mistakes from last week and be ready for a tough defensive team in Basalt.  Look for QB Nolan Bynum to get this offense going in the right direction.  Basalt will be facing the first of 3 very tough upcoming games.  This will be Basalt toughest game so far this season.  QB Matty Gillis must be on top of his game and RB Cole Dombrowski also must have a breakout game.  Basalt defensively will face a tough test in stopping a balanced offensive attack.  We will learn how good Basalt is after this game.  Delta with a win keeps their league title hopes alive.  Basalt with a win keeps pace with Rifle and regardless next weeks matchup with Rifle will be for a league title.

Playoff Contenders: Rifle, Delta, Basalt, Moffat County, Aspen

RPI: Basalt (3), Rifle (4), Delta (10), Moffat County (13), Aspen (18), Coal Ridge (27)
