We are about a week into the regular season.  Teams have kicked off their schedule and most teams have played a few games. We look forward to this Weekend and next weeks’ games.

#1 Sedgwick County

Sedgwick County has opened the 2023 Volleyball Season with a 4-1 record with wins over Flatirons Academy (3-0), Briggsdale (3-0), Weldon Valley (3-2), and Burlington (3-0).  Sedgwick County’s lone loss comes in a close matchup with surprise 1A team Haxtun 3-2.  Sedgwick County has been led in kills by Sophomore Lainee Nein with 44 kills and Junior Abigail Dille with 36 Kills.  Sedgwick County will be a taking a bit of a hiatus with no scheduled games on Maxpreps till 9/5 when they face South Platte NE.

#2 Wiggins

Wiggins has started their season strong in a tournament where they finished the weekend with a 5-0 record. During this tournament, they defeated Yuma, Wiley, Simla, Byers, and Dayspring Christian Academy, beating all of them in 3 sets. Wiggins Tigers will face the 4-1 Fleming Wildcats on 8/31 on the road, where they hope to continue their win streak. The Tigers will then travel to face the Weldon Valley Warriors next week on 9/5.

#3 Strasburg

Strasburg begins the start of their season with a 2-1 record after defeating Union Colony Prep 3-0 on 8/19 and Limon 3-0 in 8/23.Their first loss on the season is from Timnath on 8/29 where Strasburg was defeated 3-0. Peighton Marrero (Junior) leads the team in kills with 21 so far as well as leading the team with 4 blocks and 34 assists. Natalie Damron (Junior) is currently leading in digs with 14 and is matching Peighton with 4 blocks so far and right behind her in kills with 12. Strasburg will travel to the 3-0 Jefferson Academy on 8/31 and will play the 4-3 Liberty Common at home on 9/5.

#4 Fowler

The Grizzlies start their season off on the right foot with a 3-0 record, defeating Swallows Charter Academy on 8/27, 3-0, Manitou Springs on 8/22, 3-0, and Walsenburg on 8/29, 3-0. The team is led in kills by Sophomores, Lawren Johnson with 19, Jaslyn Bates with 17 and Madison Porto with 8. Jaslyn Bates and Freshman Kory Pieper leads the team in digs with 25 each with Lawren Johnson close behind with 22. Assists from the team is led by Freshman Syriah Alvarez who has 41. Fowler will play at home 8/31 against James Irwin (0-2) and will travel to Rocky Ford (0-2) on 9/5 to try to continue their winning record.

#5 Rye

Rye starts their season with 4-1 record after the first week of play. They lost their home opener and first game to Lamar, 3-1 on 8/22. From there, the Thunderbolts are on a 4-game win streak, having beat Hoehne, Peyton, Buena Vista and Swallows Charter Academy all in 3 sets. Rye is led by Seniors Jordan Holderson (28 Kills, 48 digs) and Jaklyn Newitt (20 kills, 60 digs, 71 assists, 6 blocks), Juniors Desiree Ruiz (81 digs), Mackenzie Indgjer (26 assists), and Kelsy Stribling (7 assisits), and Sophomore Isabella Bond (26 Kills, 13 blocks). On 9/5, Rye will travel to Walsenburg.

#6 Meeker

Meeker is starting their season with 4-0 record with wins over Plateau Valley (3-0), DeBeque (3-1), North From (3-0) and Hayden (3-0). The team is led by Ainsley Selle, Sr. (34 kills, 47 digs), Natalie Kracht, Sr.(29 kills), Reese Clatterbaugh, Jr.(28 kills) , Ellie Hossack, Sr.(71 assists 69 digs), Graycee Cravens, Jr. (57 assists), Taylor Garcia, Jr. (131 digs, 4 assists). The cowboys will play 8/31 in Delta and 9/1 at home against Limon.

#7 Hoehne

Hoehne starts their season off with a 3-2 record after the first week of play. They beat Swink and Del Norte at home 3-0 and La Junta on the road 3-0. Their two losses come from La Veta (3-2) and Rye (3-0), which were both road games. The Farmers stat leaders are Ellegra Guitierrez (26 kills, 35 digs), Janae Ramos (25 kills, 28 digs), Kaylah Crosson, (17 Kills), Cadence Doering (39 digs), and Aspen Garrison (10 blocks). Their next upcoming games will be Walsenburg on 8/31 at home and Swallows Charter Academy 9/5 on the road.

#8 Limon

Limon has a 1-1 record after the first week of games, having lost to Strasburg at home 3-0 but defeating Elber 3-0 on the road. The Badgers are led by Jentri Marx with 18 kills, Katelyn Tacha with 21 Digs and Katelyn Tacha with 35 assists. Upcoming games for the badgers will be against the 2-3 Kit Carson Wildcats, at home on 8/31, and they will be on the road 9/1 to face Meeker.

#9 Yuma

Yuma beings their season with a 2-2 record this year. They beat Wiley 3-2 and Kit Carson 3-0, but lost to Wiggins 3-0, and Sidney 3-2. Yuma is led in kills by senior, Caddis Robinson with 37. Alina Moran, Lauren Gonzales, and Emma Rayl lead the team with digs all having 47. Upcoming games for Yuma will be away at Pine Bluffs on 9/1 and away at Chase County (imperial NE) on 9/5.

#10 Burlington

Burlington has three games under their belt to start the season and are currently at a 0-3 record. The first week has been hard for the cougars, having been defeated by Kit Carson, 3-1, Sedgwick County, 3-0, and Hi-Plains 2-3. Despite the rough start, the team still has some good stats from leaders such as Trinitee Holmes (20 kills, 3 blocks), Regan Simpson (41 assists, 25 digs) and Azalia Fuentes (39 digs). Burlington will play Arickaree on the road 9/2 and Wray at home and will hope to get a number or two in the win column.

Lake County

Lake County has defeated West Grand (3-0), The Pinnacle (2-0), Northridge (2-0), Wellington (2-0) St. Mary’s Academy (2-1), and Moffat County (3-0) to start their season off with a 6-0 record. The panthers are led by Jaycee Windorski with 22 kills and 3 blocks, Kelsea Roeder with 8 digs, and Maggie Order with 28 assists. Lake County will be looking to continue their win streak when they on 8/31 against Englewood and at home against Fort Lupton on 9/5.

Calhan

Calhan starts their season with a 3-1 record. They defeated Kiowa (3-0) on the road and Banning Lewis (3-0) and Las Animas (3-1) at home. They will play the Center Vikings on 9/1 to try and continue their win streak.

Gilpin County

The Eagles start off their season 3-1 after the first week of play. They defeated Kiowa 3-0, Platte Canyon 3-1, West Grand 3-2 and lost to Loveland Classical 3-1. Gilpin County is led by Kenzie Marr with 64 digs, Elise Vincent with 50 kills, Jordanna Gagnon and Sterling O’Sullivan with 51 and 50 assists respectively, and by Jiselle Osteboe with 10 blocks. They will start their weekend tournament off with a game against South Park and Cedaredge.

Trinidad

Trinidad begins their season with a 4-0 record having defeated Monte Vista once in tournament play and once in league play (2-1, 3-1), Crowley County (2-1) and Walsenburg (2-1). The Miners will play Swallows Charter on 8/31 at home to try to continue their win streak.

Holyoke

Holyoke opens their season with a 3-3 record having beat Prairie (3-1), Day spring Christian (3-0) and Caliche (3-0). Their losses come from Idalia (3-0), Otis (3-0) and Haxtun (3-1). The Dragons are led by Anessa Colglazier with 15 kills and Audrey Talavera with 10 digs and 18 assists. Holyoke will play 9/5 against Merino on the road.

Rangely

Rangely finishes their first week of play 3-1. They defeated Grand Valley (2-0), Telluride (2-1), and North Park (3-0) with their loss coming from Dove Creek (2-0). The Panthers will play Vail Mountain on 9/1 on the road.

Peyton

Peyton kicks off their season with a 4-1 record after the first week. During the first week of play, they beat Harrison (3-0), Elbert (3-0), and Buena Vista (3-2), but fell to Rye 3-0. The Panthers are led by Savannah Kelley with 47 kills, Abbie Nickell with 128 assists, Tahjyanna McFall with 102 digs, and Masyn Gregg with 6 blocks. Peyton will continue this week with games against Mancos and Sanford on 9/1, West Grand on 9/2, and Kiowa on 9/6.

Swink

Swinks starts their season with a 4-1 record with their first loss of the season coming from Hoehne (3-0). The Lions so far have defeated Walsenburg 3-0, Holly 3-0, Sanford 3-1, and Crowley County 3-0. Swink is led by Daisy Heberlie with 16 blocks and 34 kills, Taylor Mendenhall with 15 blocks and 35 kills, Larriana Taggart with 46 digs, and Briana McElroy with 53 assists. The team will look to add another win this week with their game against Las Animas on 8/31.
