
Class 3A Softball Weekly Preview by Tayler Rocha
We open up our 2023 coverage of Class 3A softball with a look at the top games for the weekend. We are hoping to get rankings and continual coverage of 3A softball for the rest of the season. Look for stats and rankings next week as well as weekly previews by Tayler.
#1 Eaton
Eaton starts their season off strong after the first two weeks of play with a 6-0 record. The Reds have defeated most of their opponents so far by 10 runs (Fort Lupton 10-0, Delta 10-0, Lamar 10-0, Rocky Ford 11-1, Limon 16-6) with the exception with a tight game against Riverdale Ridge where the final score was 2-0. Senior Sadie Ross is leading the team with most hits (10), RBI (8), 5 doubles and 2 home runs. Freshman Emma Anderson is also leading the steam in stolen bases with 8 and the most runs at 10. Eaton will be playing in a tournament on 9/1 where they will face Wiley (6-0), Plamer Ridge, (3-4) and Holy Family (7-0) and will see if they can keep their win streak going.
#2 Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson begins their season with a 6-0 start, having beat their opponents Green Mountain (5-4), Mullen (19-3), Standley Lake (18-3), Far Northeast Warriors, Wheat Ridge (5-1), Vista PEAK prep (11-1 and Rangeview (17-7). Junior Sophia Sandoval is leading her team in runs with 15, 1 home run and the highest RBI at 15. Layla Colonna is leading her team in stolen bases with 8 and 18 hits. The Spartans will be playing Denver North on the road on 9/5 and Overland at home on 9/7.
#3 Strasburg
Strasburg ends the first two weeks of play with a 7-2 record. They beat Limon 12-1, Rocky Ford 6-3, Delta 13-0, La Junta 11-1, Peak to Peak 16-3, Elizabeth 7-3, and Gunnison 18-3. Strasburg lost a couple of close games to Rocky Ford 10-8, and Lyons 3-2. Strasburg is led by Addi Kent in runs and hits, both at 15, RBIs are led by Graecyn Graf and Madi Olsen with 10, and Aubrie Archuleta is leading her team in home runs with 2. They will be looking to add more wins to their record this week when they face Wheat Ridge on 9/5, and Brush on 9/7.
#4 University
The Bulldogs have a strong start to the season with a 7-1 record so far. Most of their wins have shown dominance against their opponents (Rocky Ford 11-0, Peak to Peak 12-0, Limon 22-1, Forge Christian 21-5, Limon 8-0, Platte Valley 15-0) with having a close game with Lamar 2-0, and their lone loss coming from Riverdale Ridge 15-4. The team is led by Natalie Galindo in RBIs with 14 and 3 home runs, and Ellie Baca is leading University in runs with 12 and hits with 14. The Bulldogs will be facing Wiley and Erie on 9/1, Palmer Ridge 9/2, Northridge 9/5, and Berthoud 9/7.
#5 The Academy
The Academy has an 8-1 record after the first two weeks of games. Their wins so far come from Timnath (16-0), Holyoke (14-2), Alamosa (7-5), Brush (16-0), Wellington (14-2), Lincoln (19-0), Thornton (13-0) and Standley Lake (8-3). The Wildcats’ single loss is from Erie, who beat them 10-0. The Academy is led by Isabella Bruntz in hits with 15 and is tied with Mackenzie Pearson with an RBI of 23. Mackenzie also has the team high in home runs with 2. Victoria Peason leads the team with 20 runs. The Wildcats will play a double header against Rocky Mountain Prep SMART on 9/7, at home where they will fight to continue adding wins to their record.
#6 Lyons
Lyons starts off their season with a 8-1 record. They have so far won their games against Rocky Ford (5-2), Resurrection Chrisitan (5-4) in extra innings, Standley Lake (14-5), Timnath (9-3), Limon (9-6), Peak to Peak (18-5), Strasburg (3-2) and Forge Christian (6-4). Their loss comes from Niwot where they lost a close one 1-0. Elle Magaldi leads the lions in runs with 13 hits with 14 and 6 stolen bases. Ava Vasquez holds the spot for most RBIs with 9. Lyons will be looking to continue their win streak this week, playing Sterling on 9/5 and a double header against Wellington on 9/7 at home.
#7 Gunnison
Gunnison finishes their first two weeks of play with a 5-2-1 record. The cowboys got the won over Montezuma-Cortez 16-14, and 21-6, Florence 18-2, Rocky Ford 13-11 and Cedaredge 20-11. Their losses are from Strasburg 18-3 and Delta 9-5. Kylee McDougal leads Gunnison in Hits with 13, RBIs with 16 and home runs with 1. Runs is led by Isabella Crown with 14. The Cowboys will face Alamosa this week on 9/5 where they will be looking to add a win to the record.
#8 Wellington
Wellington ends the first couple of weeks of play with a 6-1 record. The Eagles have defeated their opponents Peak to Peak 11-4, Timnath 15-3, Platte Canyon 21-0 and 18-2, Forge Christian, Jefferson Academy 22-0, and Sterling 13-3. Their lone loss comes form the Academy where they were beat 14-2. Wellington is led by Scarlet McGuire in RBIs with 13, Kensley Story in runs with 17, hits with 10, stolen bases with 8, and home runs with 2. They will be playing Valley at home on 9/5 and will have a double header against Lyons on the road 9-7.
#9 Wiley
Wiley starts off their season this year with a 6-0 record. The Panthers have had some very strong wins so far, defeating their opponents by 10 plus runs. (Burlington 16-0, 21-1, Florence 22-0, 15-0, Wray/Yuma 19-4, 12-0). Zoe Martinez is leading the team ion RBIs (13), runs (14) and home runs (1). Dixie Bitner and Rachel Kopasz are tied for most runs with 11 and Rachel has the most stolen bases with 5. Wiley will be playing on 9/1 where they will face Eaton and University, they will play a double header against Forge Christian on 9/2 and will play La Junta on 9/9.
#10 Fort Lupton
Fort Lupton enters the start of September with a 6-2 record. Their wins come from games against Boudler(14-7), La Junta(12-11), Limon(16-5), Delta (8-3) Timnath (8-4) and Valley (25-7). Their losses come from their game against Eaton (10-0) and a close one with Weld Central where they lost 5-3 in 9 innings. The next upcoming game for the Bluedevils will be against Englewood at home on 9/6.
Sterling
Sterling finishes their first two weeks of play with a 4-3 record with wins over Northfield (13-12), Longmont (21-5), Thompson Valley (14-8) and Holyoke (14-2). The three losses on the Tigers record come from Greely West (10-7), Scottsbluff (12-5) and Wellington (13-3). Upcoming games for the Tigers are against Lyons on 9/5 and Valley on 9/7.
Lamar
The Thunder begins September with a 6-3 record. Their wins are over Wray/Yuma (15-0), Weld Central(12-2), Timnath(13-1), Burlington( 16-0, 19-3), and Rocky Ford (21-7). Losses for Lamar come from their opponents Eaton (10-0), University (2-0) and Guymon (7-4 in 8). Delorin Bellomy leads the thunder in Rbi (16) stolen bases (8) and hits (18), Annabelle Morales leads the thunder in runs with 16. The next game for Lamar will be at home against La Junta on 9/2.
Dolores Huerta Prep
The Scorpions start off their season with a 4-0 record. With some of the larges amount of runs, they have defeated James Irwin 36-23, Florence 24-12, Mitchell 7-0 and a Non Varsity Opponent 17-11. Nykeysha Stringfellow is leading her team in RBIs with 10, Hits with 7, runs with 13, and stolen bases with 7. The scorpions will be playing Sand Creek on 9/2 and Florence on 9/7 to try to continue their winning record.

Great information on 3A softball. A lot of play yet to go.
Frustrated to see yet another school that gets to play in a lower division. #2 Thomas Jefferson has to be twice as big as the top end of 3A and I believe was a semi finalist last year.
Not sure why there are cut offs if this continues to happen. Examples:
Strasburg volleyball ranked #3 in 2A, #2 Thomas Jefferson in softball. Last year Wray boys basketball won state in 2A and should have been 3A and Burlington girls placed 3rd in 2A basketball and should have been 3A.
