
Class 2A Volleyball Weekly Preview by Tayler Rocha
We are about two weeks into the regular season. Most teams have competed in a few preseason tournaments and some teams have been playing a lot of games. We are starting to get closer to the start of the league season. All teams are looking for key momentum moving forward.

#1 Sedgwick County
Sedgwick County improves their record this week from 4-1 to 5-1 after a 3-0 away game against South Platte. Junior Abigail Dillie is leading the Cougars in total blocks with 17, sophomore Lainee Nein has the most digs at 75 and is also leading the team in kills with 68, and freshman Ryen Carlson has 106 assists. Sedgwick County will be playing to add more wins to their record this next week when they play Chase County at home on Tuesday, 9/12.
#2 Wiggins
Wiggins continues to add wins to their record, improving from a 5 game win streak to 7 games. This last week they defeated fleming 3-0 and played a close game with Weldon Valley, but ultimately got the victory 3-2 after finding some late match momentum. Senior Tyleigh Fehseke is leading the Tigers in total blocks (11), digs (53), and kills (73). Junior Kennedy Karr is leading the team in assists with 186 and is right behind her teammate Tyleigh in digs with 52. The Tigers will continue to fight for wins this week with games against Stratton at home on 9/7 and an away game at Haxtun on 9/12.
#3 Strasburg
Strasburg lost a couple of tough games this last week to Jefferson Academy and Liberty Common. Because of this, their record falls from 2-1 to 2-3. Strasburg will be looking to bounce back this week and get some success against Front Range Christian and two other TBA opponents on 9/9. Strasburg is lead in stats by Junior Natalie Damron in total blocks with 6 and has the second most kills at 31. Junior Peighton Marrero leads the team with 33 kills, 58 assists, and 33 digs.
#4 Fowler
Fowler went 1-1 this last week to have a 4-1 overall record. The Grizzlies lost last week to James Irwin at home 3-1, but were able to recover and beat Rocky Ford on the road 3-0. Sophomore Jaslyn Bates is leading the team in total blocks so far with 5 and also has 36 digs, freshman Syriah Alvarez is leading the Grizzlies in assists with 90, and sophomore Lawren Johnson is leading in kills with 41. Fowler will be playing Crowley County on 9/9 and Hoehne on 9/12 both at home to try to improve their record.
#5 Rye
Rye defeated Walsenburg this last week 3-0 to improve their record to 5-1. There will be a lot more action this week for the Thunderbolts and many chances to continue their success with games against Pueblo Central on 9/7, Las Animas 9/9, and Crowley County 9/12. Rye’s stat leaders this week belong to Hayley Newitt with most blocks at 18, Desiree Ruiz with 115 digs, Jaklyn Newitt with 96 assists, and Isabella Bond with 39 kills.
#6 Limon
The badgers battled this week to add two more wins on their record. Limon won their games against Kit Carson and Meeker both 3-2 to get to their overall record of 3-1. Stat leaders from the badgers are Teal Schmidt with most total blocks at 16, Samara Humphrey with 85 digs, Katelyn Tacha with 90 assists, and Jentri Marx with 55 kills. Limon will be looking to continue their success this week when they play Genoa-Hugo/ Karval on 9/7, and Bennet on 9/12.
#7 Hoehne
Hoehne won both of their games this week against Walsenburg and Swallows Charter Academy 3-0. These wins brings Hoehne to a 5-2 overall record. Leading the Famers in stats so far this season is Aspen Garrison (sophomore) with 16 total blocks, Cadence Doering (sophomore) with 62 digs, Phoenix SanRoman (junior) with 104 assists, and Janae Ramos (senior) with 58 kills. They will be looking to continue the wining this week as they play Alamosa at home on 9/7 and Fowler on the road 9/12.
#8 Meeker
Meeker’s record fell this last week with losses to Delta (3-0) and Limon in a tough battle (3-2). This leaves the cowboys with a 4-2 overall record. They will be looking to bounce back this week in the Denver Christian Tournament where they will be facing the 3-5 Holyoke Dragons. Meeker is led in total blocks by Reese Clatterbaugh with 14, digs by Taylor Garcia with 211, assists by Ellie Hossack with 102, and kills by Ainsley Selle with 48.
#9 Yuma
Yuma went 1-1 this last week to keep their 50%-win percentage with an overall record of 3-3. They beat Pine Bluffs 3-0 but lost to Chase County 0-3. Yuma is led by Caddis Robinson in kills with 51, Emma Rayl with 61 digs and 78 assists, and Lauren Gonzales with 9 total blocks. This week, Yuma will be looking to add a victory to the win column when they Brush on 9/8.
#10 Lake County
Lake County continues their win streak to finish this last week with an 8-0 record overall. They defeated Englewood 3-0 and Fort Lupton 3-1. Stat leaders for the Panthers are Jaycee Windorski with 15 total blocks and 153 kills, Kelsea Roeder with 47 digs, and Maggie Roeder with 199 assists. Lake County will be playing to continue their win streak this next Tuesday on the road where they will play KIPP Denver Collegiate on 9/12.

Mancos
The Bluejays are on a 7 game win streak with a 7-0 overall record for the season. This last week, they defeated West Grande (3-0), Peyton (3-0), Sanford (3-0), and Ignacio (3-1). Mancos is led by Haylie Higgins with 23 total blocks, Teya Yeomans with 100 digs and 105 kills, and Aysia Mathews with 177 assists. They will be looking to continue their win streak this week with games against Dolores on 9/7 and Montezuma-Cortez on 9/12.
Trinidad
Trinidad got the win this week against Swallows Charter Academy 3-1 to get a 5-0 overall record and continue their win streak. The Miners’ stat leaders so far this season are Hannah Chavez with 7 total blocks, Layla Maes with 5 assists and Jesse Gegelman with 10 kills. Trinidad will have a busier schedule this week with games against Primero on the road on 9/7, a home game against Crested Butte on 9/9, and Custer County on 9/12 on the road.
Swink
The Lions got the win this week against Las Animas 3-0. This brings their overall record to 5-1 on the season. Swink is led by Daisy Heberlie with 16 total blocks, Lariana Taggart with 46 digs, Taylor Mendenhall with 35 kills, and Briana McElroy with 53 assists. Swink will be looking to continue their win streak when they play Rocky Ford at home on 9/7.
Ignacio
Ignacio improved their record this last week to 5-2 after beating South Park, Cedaredge, and Gilpin County 3-0. They took a lost from Mancos 1-3, but will be looking to keep improving their wins this week against Denver Christian and other tournament opponents on 9/9.
Lyons
Lyons defeated Denver Christian this week 3-1, lost to Byers 1-3 and then defeated Ascent Classical Academy 3-0 to get their overall record of 4-2. The Lions are led in total blocks by Michaela Coleman with 18, Sienna Reed in digs with 42, Scarlett Voss in assists with 85, and Gemma Powell in kills with 25. Lyons will be looking to work their way up the ranks this week with their opponents Front Range Christian on 9/7 at home and on the road against Dawson School on 9/12.
Front Range Christian
Front Range Christian begins this week of play with a 7-1 overall record. They defeated Evangel Christian Academy, Byers, and Fountain Valley this previous week to continue their 6 game win streak. The Falcons will be fighting to keep improving this win streak this week with opponents Lyons on 9/7, Strasburg on 9/9, and Clear Creek on 9/12. They are led by Skyla Anglada with 26 blocks, Hannah Keyfauver with 104 digs, Emma Bolz with 184 assists, and Eadlin Hoff with 64 kills.
