Class 2A

#2 Berthoud (3-0) at Lamar (3-0)

My vote for best game in Class 2A on paper.  Berthoud makes the long trip south to face Lamar in a battle of unbeatens.  Berthoud comes into the matchup at 3-0 and are coming off a bye.  Berthoud last game was a great matchup against 3A Thompson Valley, and they came away with a 16 to 14 win.  Berthoud had to battle late to win the game and are off to a great start this season.  Berthoud offensively had a big game against Thompson Valley racking up 402 yards of total offense but will look to fix the 2 turnovers they had.  RB Alex Larsen and RB Cole Bialek both broke the 100 yards rushing mark and QB Darin Davidson scored two TDs in the game.  Defensively Berthoud limited Thompson Valley to just 255 yards of offense.  Aiden McGrath, Joey Finnegan, and Elisha Mosher all had over 12 tackles in the game.  Berthoud will be looking to move to 4-0 but will have the long road trip and another tough opponent.  Lamar is also off to a 3-0 start and are coming off a 21 to 14 win over Burlington last week.  This was a tight affair with both teams scoring 14 points in the first quarter then Lamar getting one last score in the 3rd quarter.  Lamar defensively played well after the first quarter pitching the shutout.  Diego Estrada and Austin Thacker both had over 11 tackles in the game.  Offensively Lamar did struggle at times with just 176 yards of total offense.  QB Deyago Vasquez had over 100 yards of total offense and 2 TDS and led the team.  Turnovers will be the main thing to fix for Lamar heading into this very tough matchup.

#7 Rifle (2-1) vs Brush (2-1)

We stay inside the top 10 with a great matchup.  Rifle will host Brush, and this should be a great matchup between a pair of 2-1 teams.  Rifle comes into the matchup following a tough loss to #1 Delta 28 to 7.  Defensively Rifle was able to limit the offensive attack of Delta.  Rifle did give up 363 yards of total offense but just 28 points.  Omar Silva led all tacklers for Rifle.  Offensively Rifle had 224 yards of total offense but did have two turnovers in the game.  QB Logan Gross did find some success passing with 109 yards and a TD.  The rushing attack for Rifle did struggle at times with 115 yards rushing and averaging 4.0 yards per carry.  Rifle will look to bounce back this week at home.  Brush comes into the matchup following a physical win over 1A Yuma 28 to 0.  Brush has been very tough defensively all season and they continued that last week with the shutout.  Brush limited Yuma to just 168 yards of total offense.  Percy Odle, Tanner Ludgate, and Ritchie Bruno all had over 10 tackles in the win.  Offensively Brush had 323 yards of total offense.  QB Eric Rico had 108 yards passing and a passing TD.  The rushing attack had a big day with 200 yards on the ground.  RB Ritchie Bruno led the way with 80 yards rushing.  Brush will look for a signature win if they can pull the upset.

Forge Christian (2-1) at Florence (2-2)

We move out of the top 10 for a clash of teams looking for key momentum heading into league play.  Both teams are at critical points in the season where a win moves them much closer to a postseason appearance.  Forge Christian enters the matchup at 2-1 and they are coming off a 46 to 0 loss to Kent Denver.  Offensively Forge Christian will look to bounce back after a tough day with just 123 yards of total offense.  RB Euli Tafoya led the offense with 69 yards rushing and QB Treysen Eye will look to fix his mistakes after a pair of INTS.  Defensively Forge Christian will look to improve and lock down this week.  Dante Vigil led all tachlers with 8 tackles and look for some other players to step up against the run this week.  Florence enters the matchup at 2-2 overall and are on a two-game winning streak.  Florence moved to 2-2 after a 26-2 win over league opponent Woodland Park.  Florence defensively flew around forcing 6 turnovers in the game and keeping the offense shutout.  Gage Goodall had a great day with 2 INTs and 3 fumble recoveries.  Offensively Florence had a solid day with 393 yards of total offense.  RB Luguse Nuss had a big day with 191 yards rushing and 2 rushing TDs.  QB Tanner Wrast had an ok day with 68 yards passing but 3 INTs.  Florence will look to move over .500 for the first time this season.

#10 Kent Denver (3-0) vs Sterling (1-2)

We move back into the top 10 with this matchup with #10 Kent Denver hosting Sterling.  Kent Denver just moved into the top 10 this week and will look to stay there if they can get by Sterling.  Kent Denver is off to a 3-0 start and are coming off a 46-0 win over Forge Christian.  Kent Denver had a stellar day defensively posting the shutout and limiting Forge Christian to 123 yards of offense.  Kent Denver offensively now has had back-to-back big games and will be looking for another one.  Kent Denver has not posted any stats on the year.  Sterling comes into the matchup at 1-2 overall and will be coming off a bye.  Sterling hopefully was able to get focused up and be ready for this top 10 matchup.  Sterling last matchup was against Wellington on 9/8.  Defensively Sterling must improve on stopping the run after giving up 327 yards on the ground.  Sterling did not post stats to the Wellington game.  Sterling will be looking for a huge win if they can pull the upset.

1A Del Norte (1-2) at Salida (3-1)

We move back out of the top 10 for a matchup between Salida and Del Norte.  Salida comes into the matchup at 3-1 overall and winners of 3 straight.  Salida has been playing well on the 3 game winning streak with back to back 30 point games and a key win over Rye two weeks ago.  Salida last win came over Coal Ridge 33 to 6 and they have not posted stats for the game.  Defensively Salida held Coal Ridge off the board till the fourth quarter and limited Coal Ridge to 221 yards of total offense.  Salida also forced 4 turnovers in the game.  Salida will be looking to keep the momentum as they head into league play.  Del Norte comes into the matchup at 1-2 overall and will be coming off a bye week.  Del Norte at times has struggled to get the offense going.  They will look to get the bugs fixed during the bye week and come out on all cylinders.  Del Norte last matchup was against Cedaredge where they fell 41 to 0.  Defensively they will look to improve against the run.  Del Norte has not posted stats on the year.

#6 Classical Academy vs 3A Sand Creek (1-2)

We move back into the top 10 where we have #6 Classical Academy moving up to face 3A Sand Creek.  TCA is 3-0 on the season and are looking to move to 4-0 before moving into league play.  TCA had a bye last week and comes at a great time to fix mistakes before the long stretch.  TCA last game was against Alamosa where they captured the 21 to 20 win over Alamosa.  TCA offensively did struggle at times with just 246 yards of total offense.  QB Andrew Brown had a solid day with 109 yards passing and 40 yards rushing.  RB Riley Romine also stepped in with 71 yards rushing and a TD.  Defensively TCA will look to improve after giving up over 450 yards of total offense.  TCA did force 2 turnovers and were critical in getting the win.  Gabriel Wright led all tacklers with 14.  Sand Creek comes into the matchup at 1-2 overall and coming off back-to-back losses.  Sand Creek will look to get back on track if they can pull the upset.  Last season Classical Academy defeated Sand Creek 43 to0.

Denver West (3-0) vs 3A Denver North (2-1)

We move back out of the top 10 with a matchup of DPS schools in Denver West vs Denver North.  Both teams currently sit above .500 and look to keep key momentum.  Denver West comes into the matchup at 3-0 and are coming off a 44 to 0 win over Flatirons Academy.  Denver West has a pair of quality wins over Manual and Flatirons Academy but the matchup vs Denver North should be a great test.  Denver West against Flatirons Academy had a great day offensively.  Denver West racked up over 300 yards of total offense.  QB Meekael Garcia had a career day with 165 yards passing and 2 passing TDs.  RB Roman Blea also had a big day with 164 yards rushing and 2 rushing TDs.  Defensively Denver West posted the shutout and forced 3 turnovers in the game.  Alexander Ramon led all tacklers with 9.  Denver North comes into the matchup with a 2-1 record and will be looking to bounce back after a tough loss to Northfield 21-13.  Denver North will be looking for a key win on the season and to bounce back.  Denver North defeated Denver West last season 14 to 6.

#1 Delta (4-0) vs The Academy (0-3)

We jump back into the top 10 with the #1 team in Class 2A Delta hosting The Academy.  Delta is off to a great start and have a pair of top 10 wins over University and Rifle to start the year.  Delta last week defeated Rifle 28 to 7.  Defensively Delta played well holding Rifle to just 7 points and did not allow any rusher over 50 yards in the game.  Caleb Richman and Tucker Johnson led all players with 10 tackles in the game.  Offensively Delta racked up 363 yards of total offense.  QB Ty Reed took over in the game with 186 yards passing and 103 yards rushing plus 4 total TDs in the game. RB Jovanny Romero also had an impact with 70 yards on the ground.  Delta will look to improve to 5-0 before league play.  The Academy comes into the matchup at 0-3 overall and will look to continue to improve on the year.  The Academy fell last week to D’Evelyn 30 to 7.  The Academy offensively did find some success last week rushing for over 206 yards and were led by RB Sean Smith who ran for 108 yards and 1 TD.  The main thing The Academy must fix is turnovers as they had 5 total turnovers in the game.  Defensively The Academy limited the rushing attack of D’Evelyn but did give up 241 yards passing.  The Academy will need to bring their A game against the run this week.
