
Class 2A Girls Basketball Update

We have decided for the month of December to look at the top 10 teams and look at their past results and also look at the teams who are off to great starts but not ranked. This week we will look at the past two weeks and next week we will look back at the previous week and any remaining games until the Winter Break. Rankings used are MileHigh Prep Reports.

#1 Merino (2-0)
Merino is off to a strong start with wins over Flatirons Academy (42-24), and #7 Simla (52-33). They will be facing a tough 1A team in Prairie (4-0) in the NJC Tournament where both teams will be looking to win keep their perfect record afloat and advance into the winner’s part of the NJC Tournament.
#2 Sedgwick County (3-0)
Sedgwick County starts the season off with wins against South Platte (56-21), 4A Pagosa Springs (54-49), and Heritage Christian (38-33). They will be looking to keep their success running into the new year this Thursday when they face Holyoke (1-2) in the NJC Tournament. Early season leaders for the team are Abigail Dille with 57 points and Lainee Nein with 8 assists and 19 rebounds.
#3 Limon (1-1)
Limon kicked off their season with a win against #8 Wiggins (50-45) and fell in close game to 3A Peyton (65-62). On 12/15 the Badgers will face Sterling (1-1) in the Bank of Colorado Tournament, hosted by Yuma. Limon can go into the new year with a positive win record if they have a good showing. The big leader for the team so far is Jentri Marx with 33 points, 13 assists, and 22 rebounds.
#4 Akron (2-1)
The Rams are sitting with a 2-1 record to start the season with wins against Burlington (45-34) and Otis (59-26). They lost to Idalia in the second game of their season in a barn burner 27-28. They will be playing a few more games before the end of the year starting with the 1-1 Dayspring Christian Academy in the NJC Tournament. he rest of their games will be on 12/15, and 12/16 with opponents TBA. After the first 3 games, stat leaders are Addicyn Kessinger with 51 points and 27 rebounds, and Kinsey Grauer with 12 assists.
#5 Burlington (2-3)
Burlington begins their season with a 2-3 record. They started out with a tough loss to Akron 34-45 but were able to bounce back and beat Holyoke 52-29. Then in tournament play, the cougars were able to beat Ulysses 57-43, but then fell to Colby 36-49 and Norton 40-48. The ladies will be back in action against Elbert in the new year in 1/6. So far, stat leaders for Burlington are Kiyarra Williams with 60 points, Reagan Simpson with 16 assists, and Trinitee Holmes with 44 rebounds.
#6 Rangely (5-0)
With a very strong 5-0 start to the season, Rangely has beat Manila 49-41, American Heritage 46-36, Nucla 53-20, North Park 81-15 and De Beque 58-33. They will have a couple of more games in the Bank of Colorado Tournament beginning on 12/15 against 3A Yuma to see if they can keep their perfect record going into the new year. Top performers so far for the Panthers are Miah Wren with 105 points, Miley Chism with 10 assists, and Annika Cantrell with 40 rebounds.
#7 Simla (2-2)
Simla starts off with a 2-2 record so far this season. Their first game to Peyton did not give them the start that they were hoping for and they fell to Peyton 26-51, but were able to get a win against #8 Wiggins in a close game of 59-54. They were also able to beat Holyoke 48-17 but then lost to #1 Merino 33-52. They will be playing in a tournament start on 12/15 with their first opponent being Monte Vista. Their last game to wrap up the year will be a rematch against Peyton on 12/19. Leading the team so far this season is Carlee Cox with 43 points and Kylie Maranville with 8 assists and 31 rebounds.
#8 Wiggins (1-2)
Wiggins has played some tough opponents to open up their season, including #3 Limon and #7 Simla. The Tigers fell to Limon 45-50 and Simla 54-59, but beat DCA 43-29, giving them a 1-2 record. Wiggins will be playing in the NJC Tournament beginning on 12/14 against Haxtun and will go through 12/16 to end the year.
#9 Fowler (2-2)
Fowler starts this season with a 2-2 record so far. The Grizzlies started their season off with a couple of wins against Evangel Christian Academy 45-44 and SCA 63-24. They have since lost to CSCHS 31-82 and Las Animas 36-45. Fowler will play in a tournament on 12/21 with their first opponent being Jefferson to end the year. Top players so far for Fowler are Randy Maestas with 46 points, Andrea Maestas with 8 assists, and Jaslyn Bates with 13 rebounds.
#10 Denver Christian (3-1)
Denver Christian currently has a 3-1 record to start their season. They started their season with a loss to Colorado Academy 42-58, but have since bounced back and have won against 3A Forge Christian 54-37, West Grand 45-26 and Byers 60-54. They will play on 12/13 against St. Mary’s Academy who currently has a 3-2 record and close the year in the Katte Classic Tournament.
Team who are off to great starts and not ranked
We look at 6 teams who are not ranked but are off to a great start this season.
Sanford (3-0)
The Mustangs are off to a very strong 3-0 start with wins against Salida (32-21, Ignacio 52-44 and 3A #5 Centauri 42-39 (OT). Sanford more than likely will be ranked next week. They will be playing the Katte Classic Tournament hosted by Denver Christian beginning on 12/21 where their first opponent will be Hayden and they will be looking to carry their perfect record into the new year.
Heritage Christian (1-1)
The Eagles start the season so far with a 1-1 record. They opened up their season with a win against Hoehne 45-41 and fell to #2 Sedwick County 38-33. Starting on 12/14, Heritage Christian will be playing in a tournament starting on 12/14 and will face Prospect Ridge Academy (0-4), Glenwood Springs (1-4), and Windsor Charter Academy (4-1).
Cotopaxi (4-0)
Cotopaxi starts their season off with a 4-0 record with wins against Cripple Creek-Victor 41-8, South Park 43-41 (OT), Antonito 70-21, and Lake County 50-12. They will be playing three games before the end of the new year against Cripple Creek-Victor on 12/15, Evangel Christian Academy on 12/16, and Trinidad on 12/19. Leading the team so far for Cotopaxi is Hayden Eggleston with 33 points and Abby Faith with 4 assists and 13 rebounds.
Plateau Valley (4-0)
Plateau Valley is off to a very strong start with a 4-0 record. They have defeated Soroco 63-7, Vail Christian 75-9, Telluride 54-9, and Crested Butte 67-28. Their last game heading into the new year will be 12/13 against De Beque who has a 4-2 record. Stat leaders for the Cowboys are Emaline Ealey with 102 points and 50 rebounds, and Zully Varela Castillo with 15 assists.
Crowley County (4-0)
Crowley County opens up their season with a 4-0 record. Their wins include victories over Rocky Ford, 43-38 (OT), Walsenburg 42-16, Granada 46-39, and Florence 64-31. Starting on 12/15, they will play in the C-Town Showdown with their first game being against Sierra Grande.
Monte Vista (3-0)
The Pirates are off to a 3-0 start for the season with wins against 4A Pueblo Centennial 46-16, 4A Pueblo Central 52-20 and Swink 66-29. They will play in tournament style games on 12/15 against Simla, and have a regular game to end the year against Bayfield on 12/19. Leaders for the Pirates are Zariah Archuleta with 41 points, Heysenny Betran with 8 assists, and Hannah Henderhan with 19 rebounds.
