Class 2A Wrestling Top 10 Team Breakdown
Something new we have decided to do is take a look at the top 10 teams in Wrestling. We will be looking at how many wresters they have ranked total, inside the top 10, and the kids ranked in the top 3. We are also looking at what upcoming tournaments teams have. #1 Wray
Wray took over as the #1 team two weeks ago and will look to add another team title to their trophy case. Wray currently has 9 total wrestlers ranked in their respective weight classes. Expect changes with the 2lb allowance. Wray has wrestlers ranked at 106, 126, 132, 138, 150, 157, 165, 175, and 190. Wrestlers ranked in the top 3 for Wray are: #1 Austin Collins (126), #1 Samuel Meisner (150), and #2 Casey Midcap (165). Wray will be at the Tournament of Champions in Utah this weekend.
#2 Cedaredge
Cedaredge continues to see their rank increase weekly. Cedaredge started the season ranked #4 and have since risen to #2 in the latest team rankings by Tim Yount. Cedaredge currently has 9 wrestlers ranked in their current weight classes. Expect changes with the 2lb allowance. Cedaredge has wrestlers ranked at 106, 113, 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157, and 215. Wrestlers ranked in the top 3 for Cedaredge are: #2 Ethan Hice (126), and #1 Landon Martin (144). Cedaredge will be at the Gunnison Cowboy Invitational on 1/6.
#3 Meeker
Meeker kicked off the preseason ranking at #1 but have slide back a bit to #3. I still believe the race for the team title will be very close especially with the top 5 teams. Meeker currently has 6 wrestlers ranked in their current weight classes, of course expect some changes with the 2lb allowance. Meeker has wrestlers ranked at 126, 138, 175, 190, 215, and 285. Wrestlers ranked in the top 3 for Meeker are: #2 Cade Blunt (175), #1 Brendan Clatterbaugh (190), #1 Judd Harvey (215), #2 Noah Leblanc (285). Meeker will be at the Tournament of Champions in Utah this weekend.
#4 Mancos
Mancos has been at #3 or #4 so far this season as a team. The latest ranking keeps them sitting at #4 as a team but like other teams ranked in the top 5 I believe could be in the mix for the team title. Mancos currently has 5 wrestlers ranked in their respective weight classes. Expect changes with the 2lb allowance. Mancos has wrestlers ranked at 113, 157, 165, 190, and 285. Wrestlers ranked in the top 3 for Mancos are: #1 Brandon Vannest (157), #2 Cole Dainty-Guilfoyle (190), #1 Elliot Sam (285). Mancos will be at the 2024 Conflict at Cleveland in New Mexico on 1/5 and then the Gunnison Cowboy Invitational on 1/6.
#5 Center
Center is another team who has been a fast riser in the rankings. Center started the season at #7 and have risen to #5 and proven they can be a top team with winning the small school title for the Warrior Classic. Center currently has 7 wrestlers ranked at their current weight classes but expect some changes with the 2lb allowance. Center has wrestlers ranked at 106, 113, 126, 150, 157, 165, and 175. Wrestlers ranked in the top 3 for Center are: #2 Michael Archuleta (106) and #3 Martin Palma (165). Center will dual Centauri on 1/5 in Centauri then will compete in the Rocky Mountain Invitation in Pagosa Springs on 1/6.
#6 Sedgwick County/Fleming
Sedgwick County/Fleming did not start the season preseason ranked in the top 10 but have quickly moved up the rankings. Sedgwick County/Fleming now sit at #6 improving from #8 last week. Sedgwick County/Fleming currently has 6 wrestlers ranked in their current weight classes. Sedgwick County/Fleming has wrestlers ranked at 113, 120, 132, 144, 150, and 165. Wrestlers ranked in the top 3 for Sedgwick County/Fleming are: #2 Kaiden Schelling (120), #2 Scotty Engle (132), and #3 Mario Nieto Ortiz (144). Sedgwick County/Fleming will participate in the Garden CO. Invite in Nebraska on 1/6.
#7 Buena Vista
Buena Vista started the season ranked #5 in the preseason poll by Tim Yount. Buena Vista has since fallen to #7 but still remain a team to watch going into 2024. Buena Vista currently has 6 wrestlers ranked in their current weight classes. Buena Vista has wrestlers ranked at 113, 138, 144, 157, 165, and 215. Wrestlers ranked in the top 3 for Buena Vista are #1 Caleb Camp at 138 lbs. Buena Vista will compete in the Thunderbolt Dual Classic on 1/6. (I Believe, if wrong let me know)
#8 Rocky Ford
Rocky Ford makes the jump into the top 10 rankings for the first time this season. Rocky Ford sits at #8 in the latest team rankings by Tim Yount. Rocky Ford currently has 8 wrestlers ranked at their current weights. Rocky Ford has wrestlers ranked at 106, 113, 120, 126, 138, 144, 190, and 285. Wrestlers ranked in the top 3 for Rocky For are #3 Emilio Vallejos at 106 Lbs. Rocky Ford will dual Monte Vista on 1/5 then participate in the Rocky Mountain Invitation in Pagosa Springs on 1/6.
#9 Dolores Huerta
Dolores Huerta was preseason ranked #8. They have not moved higher than #8 but have fallen to #10. This week Dolores Huerta sits at #9 which is up one spot from the previous week. Dolores Huerta currently has 2 kids ranked at their current weights which are 106 and 113. Wrestlers ranked in the top 3 for Dolores Huerta are: #1 Miguel Franco (106) and #1 AJ Jaramillo (113). Dolores Huerta will compete in the Bennett Tournament on 1/6 in Bennett.
#10 North Fork
The final team to mention is North Fork. North Fork started the season preseason ranked #6 but have slide back to #10 in the latest team ranking from Tim Yount. North Fork last week was sitting at #6 so don’t expect them to stay at #10 long. North Fork currently has 7 kids ranked at their current weight classes but expect changes with the 2lb allowance. North Fork has wrestlers ranked at 120, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157, and 175. Wrestlers ranked in the top 3 for North Fork are #2 Charlie Miller at 144 lbs. North Fork will be at the Tournament of Champions in Utah this weekend.
