Class 2A Girls Basketball Weekly Update Week 6 by Tayler Garcia

For the next 3 weeks of January, we will continue to look at the top 10 ranked teams via the MileHigh Prep Report Rankings and 6 other teams who are just outside of the rankings.  Then during the final week of January until Districts we will switch to breaking down the playoff bubble.  This week we will look back at the past week plus look ahead to this week & weekend.

#1 Merino (6-0)

The Rams start off 2024 with another win on 1/5 against Wray (61-39) to bring their overall record of 6-0. This first game of the year was a league game which also gives Merino a 1-0 record in league play so far. The Rams will be on the road this weekend as they face Wiggins in a league game on 1/12 and Genoa-Hugo/Karval on 1/13 where they will be looking to end the week with a 8-0 record. 

#2 Sedgwick County (6-1)

Sedgwick County has a 6-1 record to start the 2024 portion of their season. They started 2024 off strong with a league win against Akron, 46-40, giving their league record a 1-0 start. They will be looking to continue their success on 1/12 when they face Caliche on the road in their second league game. Stat leaders so far for the Cougars are Abigail Dille with 112 points, 15 assists and 28 rebounds, Lainee Nein with 106 points, 20 assists, and 43 rebounds, Avery Goddard with 31 points, Ryen Carlson with 9 assists, and Chloe Thode with 15 assists. 

#3 Limon (5-2)

The Badgers are off to a 5-2 start for 2024. They kicked off the new year with wins against Genoa-Hugo/Karval (59-30), Dolores Huerta Prep (63-15) and Calhan (53-43). Limon will face Flagler this weekend on 1/12 and Elbert on 1/13 in two league games and will be looking to improve their record, both overall and for league. Leading the Badgers so far this season are Jentri Marx with 105 points, 32 assists and 58 rebounds, Katelyn Tacha with 73 points and 16 assists, Teal Schmidt with 27 points and 34 rebounds, Jazzy Rosler with 12 assists and Enyceia Frescas with 32 rebounds. 

#4 Akron (4-3)

Akron fell this last week to Sedgwick County in a close game of 40-46. This loss leaves Akron with a 4-3 overall record and 0-1 in league play. They will be looking to bounce back and get a couple of wins this weekend when they play Briggsdale on 1/11 and Wray in a league game on 1/12.  The Rams’ stat leaders are Addi Kessinger with 113 points, 5 assists and 64 rebounds, Kinsey Grauer with 87 points, 17 assists and 26 rebounds, and Kashlee Randel with 57 points, 26 assists and 21 rebounds.

#5 Burlington (4-3)

Burlington currently has a 4-3 record capturing a win against Elbert (64-7) to start the new year. With the win against Elbert, the Cougars kicked off their league record to a 1-0 start. Last night, they defeated Wray 60-27. They will be looking to continue their success with games this weekend against Simla on 1/12 and Calhan on 1/13. Leading Burlington so far this season are Kiyarra Williams with 84 points, 10 assists, and 43 rebounds, Trinitee Holmes with 66 points, 14 assists and 54 rebounds, and Reagan Simpson with 37 points, 17 assists and 25 rebounds. 

#6 Rangely (8-1)

The Panthers currently have a 8-1 record with their most recent wins coming this new year against North Fork (42-26) and Soroco (54-26). Their win against Soroco was a league game which gives Rangely a 1-0 league record. The Panthers will play Plateau Valley on 1/11 and Caprock Academy on 1/16 where they will be looking to continue their success and add some wins to their records. Leading the team currently are Miah Wren with 145 points and 14 assists, Annika Cantrell with 71 points and 73 rebounds, Ashlynn Ducey with 68 points and 10 assists, Miley Chism with 13 assists and Emmeree Wagner with 40 rebounds. 

#7 Denver Christian (7-2)

Denver Christian starts off January with a 7-2 overall record and a 1-0 league record. The Thunder defeated Lyons to kick off January 68-22 in a league game to give them a good league start. Denver Christian will play Wray on 1/13 and Bishop Machebeuf on 1/15 and will be looking to continue their current success into these games. Stat leaders for the team are Kamiree Fuller with 122 points,15 assists, and 24 rebounds, Noelani Book with 85 points and 30 assists, Anna Everett with 29 points and 15 assists, Fabiana Genc with 58 rebounds and Natalie Bohannon with 26 rebounds. 

#8 Simla (5-4)

Simla currently has a 5-4 record and no league games yet played. They lost their first game of the new year to McClave 51-39 and beat Byers 51-31. The Cubs will face Burlington on 1/12 to try to continue their success and add more wins to their record. This will also be their first league game, so they will be looking to start their league record off with a win. Leading Simla currently are Carlee Cox with 62 points, 15 assists and 53 rebounds, Kylie Maranville with 62 points 13 assists and 52 rebounds, Kylie Brickell with 49 points, Katie Gotschall with 15 assists, and Amara Mazerall with 35 rebounds. 

#9 Sanford (6-2)

The Mustangs sit with a 6-2 record currently, splitting the games in the new year with a loss to Pagosa Springs 38-27 and a win against Alamosa 44-37. Sanford will play Mancos on 1/13 and will be playing to add more wins to their record before they start playing league games. Stat leaders for Sanford are Brooklyn Reynolds with 62 points and 17 assists, Shasta Bond with 61 points, 4 assists and 23 rebounds, Claire Crowther with 32 points, Riley Willet with 5 assists and 16 rebounds, and Erica Miller with 23 rebounds. 

#10 Hoehne (6-2)

The Farmers are currently off to a 6-2 start to their season, with a 3-0 league record so far. Hoehne beat Swink to kick off 2024 54-13 and are on a 3-game win streak. They will be facing Fowler on 1/12 and Walsenburg on 1/16 and will be looking to continue to improve their record. Leading the Farmers so far this season are Janae Ramos with 107 points and 48 rebounds, Ellegra Guriterrez with 51 points and 17 rebounds, Kaylah Crosson with 49 points and 42 rebounds, Phoenix San Roman with 20 assists, Alessa Cantoria with 15 assists, and Janelle Ramos with 32 rebounds.

Other Teams just outside of the top 10

We look at 6 teams who are not ranked but are off to a great start this season.

Dayspring Christian (4-2)

The Eagles currently have a 4-2 record with an overtime win against Heritage Christian to kick off the new year (35-33). This was their first league game which gives Dayspring a good start to their league record and is hopefully a preview for the close games that will be played in the Mile High League. They will be looking to continue their success this week with games against Platte Valley on 1/12 and Bishop Machebeuf on 1/16.

Wiggins (4-4)

Wiggins currently has a split record of 4-4 but has come out strong so far this year with wins against Byers (43-23) and Haxtun (54-44). They will have games against Merino on 1/12 and Prairie on 1/16 where they will be looking to add wins to their overall and league records. Stat leaders for the Tigers are Kennedy Kerr with 145 points and 20 assists, Riley Hunt with 93 points and 73 rebounds, Taelynn Epple with 36 points and 30 rebounds, and Tyleigh Fehseke with 22 assists and 42 rebounds.

Heritage Christian (4-3)

Heritage Christian starts the second half of their season with a 4-3 overall record and 0-1 in league play. They played DCA to kick off 2024 and lost in an overtime game (35-33) and played Union Colony Prep on 1/9 (score not reported). They will face Lyons on 1/12 and will be trying to get their first league win.

Caliche (6-1)

The Buffaloes have a 6-1 overall record and are starting off their league play with a 1-0 record. To start January, Caliche beat Holyoke 47-45 and Weldon Valley 53-37 to put them on a 5-game win streak. They will face Sedgwick County in a league game on 1/12 and Otis on 1/13. Leading the team so far this season are Karsyn Huss with 84 points, 18 assists and 29 rebounds, Ava Hernandez with 57 points, 18 assists, and 32 rebounds, Hallie Lewis with 45 points, and Ryann Svoboda with 7 assists and 43 rebounds. 

Loveland Classical (6-0)

The Lions are on a 6-game winning streak this season with a 6-0 record. They played Ascent Classical Academy on 1/9 (score not reported) and will face Rocky Mountain Lutheran on 1/11 and Windsor Charter Academy on 1/12. Leading Loveland Classical are Abigail Ruppert with 90 points and 10 assists, Alethia Thye with 64 points, Lara Riedel with 26 points and 40 rebounds, Jessika Scoma with 5 assists and 25 rebounds, Keira Doan with 4 assists and Sophia Stern with 35 rebounds. 

Center (5-3)

Center starts off January with a 5-3 record. To start the new year, the Vikings beat Rocky Ford 47-30 but fell to Peyton 60-29. They will play their first league game of the season on 1/12 against Del Norte and will face Las Animas on 1/13 where they will be looking to add more wins to their record. Stat leaders for Center are Alicia Rios with 104 points and 13 assists, Ciara Paiz with 53 points and 5 assists, Ximena Miranda with 51 points and 83 rebounds, Yanelli Garcia with 9 assists, Emiliana Valdez with 44 rebounds, and Dulce Palma with 36 rebounds.
