
Class 3A Girls Basketball Weekly Update Week 6 by Tayler Garcia
For the next 3 weeks of January, we will continue to look at the top 10 ranked teams via the MileHigh Prep Report Rankings and 6 other teams who are just outside of the rankings. Then during the final week of January until Districts we will switch to breaking down the playoff bubble. This week we will look back at the past week plus look ahead to this week & weekend.

Colorado Springs Christian
C.S. Christian kicks off January with a 7-0 overall record and a 3-0 league record after getting two wins against Pueblo South (78-13) and Manitou Springs (81-20) to start the new year. The Lions will be looking to add a couple of wins to their league record when they face Rye on 1/16 and Salida on 1/17. Leading the team currently in stats are Grace Minihane with 126 points and 41 rebounds, Kinsey Asp with 73 points and 32 assists, Rose Ross with 69 points, and 19 assists, Jordyn Rollins with 14 assists and 36 rebounds and Abigail Perry with 49 rebounds.
St. Mary’s
St. Mary’s entered 2024 with a league game in against Buena Vista 39-30. This win brings the Pirates to a 6-1 overall record and 2-0 in league play. They will be looking to add to the win column next week when they play Manitou Springs on the road on 1/17. Current stat leaders for the Pirates are Maeve Salceson with 118 points and 27 assists, Sydney Ramirez with 87 points, Jaela Pedro with 84 points and 41 rebounds, Hope Chavez with 29 assists and 43 rebounds, and Aylin Luna Zamora with 22 assists and 35 rebounds.
Peyton
Peyton currently carries a perfect record of 7-0, most recently beating Center in the new year 60-29 as well as Salida 72-34. The Panthers will be looking to continue their success next week as they face Vanguard on 1/15 and Swallows Charter on 1/16. Top players for Peyton so far this season are AJ Mannering with 215 points, 19 assists and 38 rebounds, Abbie Nickell with 89 points and 14 assists, Emme Ratliff with 63 points and 41 rebounds, Butula Murray with 6 assists, and Sammie Nickell with 42 rebounds.
Grand Valley
The Cardinals are off to a 6-0 start as we enter January play. They kicked off the new year with wins against Coal Ridge (51-25) and Moffat County (48-33). Grand Valley will have a busy week this week with games against Aspen on 1/12, Meeker on 1/13, Roaring Fork on 1/16 and Cedaredge on 1/18. Stat leaders for the Cardinals are Jaycee Pittman with 112 points, 22 assists and 46 rebounds, Kaylae Medina with 64 points and 18 assists, Chloe Gronewoller with 41 points and39 rebounds, Chloe Williams with 9 assists and Aryaa Tanner with 40 rebounds.
Yuma
Yuma starts 2024 with a win against Highland, 53-39 to bring their overall record to 6-1 on the season. The team will have their first two league games this week on 1/12 against Holyoke and on 1/13 against Haxtun. Leading Yuma currently in stats are Caddis Robinson with 72 points, 15 assists and 54 rebounds, Jade Lungwitz with 69 points and 24 rebounds, Alina Moran with 55 points and 36 rebounds, Emma Rayl with 14 assists and Ashley Ibanez with 12 assists.
Centauri
The Falcons currently have a 6-2 record, losing to Delta 66-40 and beating Vanguard 63-44 to begin 2024. They will be starting league play this week and will kick it off on the road against Pagosa Springs on 1/12. They will then face Bayfield on 1/13 at home. Leading the Falcons so far this season are Hannah Curtis with 69 points, 11 assists and 32 rebounds, Braelyn Tucker with 65 points and 18 assists, Lacey Johnson with 57 points and 48 rebounds, Jaelyn Jackson with 13 assists and Joselyn McCarroll with 33 rebounds.
Timnath
Currently with an 8-3 record, Timnath opened up 2024 with wins against Basalt (71-15) and The Academy (70-33), but then lost their 7 game win streak to Rocky Mountain (78-51). This week, the Cubs will be looking to bounce back and add wins to their record. They will face Valley on 1/12 and will play their first league game on 1/16 against Platte Valley. Currently leading Timnath are Gretchen Deines with 139 points and 59 rebounds, Tiana Guzman with 132 points, 28 assists and 69 rebounds, Olivia Zadeh with 95 points, Izzy Schimmelpfennig with 38 assists, Lily Eisenberner with 38 assists, and Ashlee Stone with 42 rebounds.
Montezuma-Cortez
The Panthers ended 2023 with a 4-3 record and will kick off the 2024 portion of their season against Bayfield on 1/12. They will then travel to Alamosa and play the Mean Moose on 1/13. They will be looking to get a good start to 2024 and to league by winning these games. Leading the team so far in stats are Savannah Haselroth with 89 points, 11 assists and 46 rebounds, Taylor Whited with 82 points and 23 assists, Markylla Jones with 43 points, 14 assists and 70 rebounds, and Kalea Ogo with 32 rebounds.
Strasburg
Strasburg currently is 4-4 on the season. They opened 2024 with a win against Rocky Ford 57-17, but lost their first league game against Highland 57-51, giving them a 0-1 league start. Strasburg will be looking to get more wins this week and will face Ellicott 1/11, Valley on 1/13 and will play a couple of league games against Liberty Common on 1/16 and Platte Valley on 1/18. Stat leaders for the team so far this season are Gracey Graf with 88 points and 32 assists, Peighton Marrero with 79 points, 23 assists and 33 rebounds, Natalie Damron with 74 points and 86 rebounds, Aubrie Archuleta with 6 assists and Hannah Damron with 42 rebounds.
Cedaredge
The Bruins are 2-0 to start the new year and beat Plateau Valley (43-31) and Nucla (49-32) to kick off 2024. This leaves them with a 5-2 overall record and are 2-0 in league play. This week, Cedaredge will face Roaring Fork on 1/12 at home, Olathe on the road on 1/13, and Grand Valley at home on 1/18. They will be looking to win these games to add more wins to their records. Stat leaders so far for the Bruins are Carley Malinowski with 85 points, 10 assists and 48 rebounds, Sammy Denison with 48 points and 13 assists, Libby Brooks with 26 points and 29 rebounds, and Lydia Tietz with 13 assists and 25 rebounds.
Platte Valley
Platte Valley will be looking to break their 6 game losing streak this week and will face DCA on 1/12 in a league game, Timnath on 1/16, and Strasburg on 1/18. The Broncos are currently 1-8 but have played some tough opponents so far. Their two losses in 2024 are from Eaton (81-34) and University (64-19). Leaders for Platte Valley so far this season are Lauryn Uyemura with 74 points and 8 assists, Alyssa Salazar with 41 points, Mia Koffler with 23 points and 15 rebounds, Addy Grossnickle with 2 assists and 14 rebounds, Lidia Vasquez with 2 assists and Kamber Offinga with 16 rebounds.
Bennett
The Tigers are 5-1 overall and 1-0 after beating The Pinnacle 63-10 to open 2024. This week, Bennett will be looking to add more wins to their record and will face Lake County on 1/12, Jefferson on 1/13 and Englewood on 1/18. Top performers for Bennett so far this season are Lily Venneberg with 121 points 20 assists and 32 rebounds, Jessica Venneberg with 85 points, 13 assists and 34 rebounds, Marayha Munoz with 25 points, Raquel Thrope with 9 assists, and Mya Robledo with 26 rebounds.
Buena Vista
Buena Vista currently has a 4-3 overall record and are 2-1 in league play. The Demons were able to defeat Banning Lewis to start 2024 (41-25) but fell to St. Mary’s (39-30). The team will be looking to bounce back and collect some wins this week and will play Woodland Park on 1/11 and Ellicott on 1/13 in league games and will also play Summit on 1/16.
Banning Lewis
Banning Lewis has a 6-2 overall record and are 2-2 in league play. To start off 2024, the Stallions beat Liberty Tree Academy (55-13), fell to Buena Vista (41-25), and beat La Junta (58-34). Banning Lewis will be looking to add more wins to their record this week with several games against Lamar on 1/12, Mitchell on 1/15, and Florence on 1/16. Stat leaders for the Stallions are Ashtyn McKean with 67 points and 3 assists, Elany Canada with 72 points, Kaylee Gentsch with 67 points, 4 assists, and 17 rebounds, Natalia Burton with 3 assists and 29 rebounds and Katie Chandler with 19 rebounds.
Woodland Park
The Panthers won their first two games on 2024 against Thomas MacLaren School (41-33) and La Junta (48-41), but fell to Ellicott in a close game of 30-28. This leaves them with a 4-3 overall record and 202 in league play. Woodland Park will face Buena Vista, Harrison on 1/15 and Vanguard on 1/17. Leading the team so far this season is Emma Larsen with 85 points and 68 rebounds, Brenna Larsen with 71 points and 16 assists, Stella Schroeder with 55 points, 24 assists and 43 rebounds, Kai Kattil with 5 assists and Adeline Hughes with 44 rebounds.
Vanguard
Vanguard split the games they have played so far in the new year and lost to Centauri 63-44 but beat Florence 58-20. They will be looking to break the tie with some wins this week and improve their 5-2 overall record and continue their successful 3-0 league record. This week the Coursers will face Lamar on 1/13 in a league game, Peyton on the road on 1/15 and Woodland Park on the road in league game on1/17. Stat leaders for Vanguard are Jordyn Christensen with 84 points, Baily Fritzke with 71 points and Lily Blanchard with 57 points.
