
Class 2A Girls Basketball Weekly Update Week 7 by Tayler Garcia
For the next 2 weeks of January, we will continue to look at the top 10 ranked teams via the MileHigh Prep Report Rankings and 6 other teams who are just outside of the rankings. Then during the final week of January until Districts we will switch to breaking down the playoff bubble. This week we will look back at the past week plus look ahead to this week & weekend.

1. Merino (8-0)
Merino secured three wins last week against Prairie (60-14), Akron (54-42) and Sedgwick County (50-39). These wins allow Merino to maintain their perfect record, 8-0 now overall and 2-0 in league, and are sitting 2nd in the Lower Platte League early in play. This week, the Rams will play Caliche on 1/19 at home in a league game, Stratton on 1/20, and Lyons on 1/23.
2. Sedgwick County (7-1)
The Cougars are 7-1 overall after a league win against Caliche (59-41). They are now 2-0 in league play and are 3rd in the Lower Platte League. Sedgwick County will be playing Haxtun on 1/19 on the road and Garden County on 1/23 on the road. Leading the team this season is Abigail Dille with 133 points, 17 assists, and 39 rebounds, Lainee Nein with 126 points, 23 assists, and 51 rebounds, Avery Goddard with 37 points, and Chloe Thode with 12 assists and 38 rebounds.
3. Limon (7-2)
Limon was able to defeat their league opponents Flagler (59-34) and Elbert (46-18) this weekend which leaves them with a 7-2 overall record and 4-0 in league play. Limon is currently sitting 3rd in the Union Pacific league. The Badgers will look to expand their three-game win streak this week as they will face Evangel Christian Academy on 1/18, Deer Trail on 1/20, and Simla on 1/23. Stat leaders for the Badgers are Jentri Marx with 150 points, 41 assists, and 86 rebounds, Katelyn Tacha with 107 points and 28 assists, Teal Schmidt with 43 points and 45 rebounds, Jazzy Rosler with 18 assists, Enyceia Frescas with 39 rebounds.
4. Burlington (6-3)
Burlington is on a four-game winning streak after beating Simla 62-48 and Calhan 56-19. The Cougars now have a 6-3 overall record, a 3-0 league record, and are 2nd in the Union Pacific league. The ladies will be looking to add wins to their record this week and will play Genoa-Hugo/Karval on the road on 1/19 and Colorado Springs School on 1/20 at home. Stat leaders for the Cougars are Kiyarra Williams with 135 points, 18 assists, and 70 rebounds, Trinitee Holmes with 109 points, 24 assists, and 73 rebounds, Lynzee Neal with 72 points, and Reagan Simpson with 31 assists and 40 rebounds.
5. Rangely (10-1)
Rangely is 9-1 overall, 2-0 in league play and are 2nd in the Western Slope League. This last week, the Panthers beat Plateau Valley 56-26 and played Caprock Academy on 1/6. The team will be looking to expand on their win streak this week and will face Little Snake River on 1/18 and North Park on 1/20. Top performers from the team so far this season are Miah Wren with 177 points and 16 assists, Ashlynn Ducey with 93 points, Annika Cantrell with 88 points and 88 rebounds, Miley Chism with 16 assists and 60 rebounds, and Emmeree Wagner with 12 assists and 58 rebounds.
6. Akron (5-4)
Akron is 5-4 overall after losing to Briggsdale 42-37 and beating Wray 54-23. The win over Wray pushes their league record to 1-1 and puts Akron 4th in the Lower Platte League. The Rams will play Fleming on 1/18 and Yuma on 1/19 both at home. Stat leaders for Akron are Kinsey Grauer with 115 points, 26 assists, and 49 rebounds, Addi Kessinger with 113 points, 7 assists, and 69 rebounds, Kashlee Randel with 79 points and 26 assists, and Becky Drum with 35 rebounds.
7. Hoehne (8-2)
With two wins this past week against Fowler (48-38) and Walsenburg (47-0), Hoehne is now sitting with an 8-2 overall record, are 5-0 in league play and currently 1st in the Santa Fe League. The Farmers will be facing the 8-3 Crowley County this week on 1/19 at home where they will be looking to beat another league opponent. Top players for Hoehne so far are Janae Ramos with 121 points and 56 rebounds, Ellegra Guriterrez with 71 points and 21 assists, Phoenix San Roman with 64 points and 26 assists, Alessa Cantoria with 23 assists and 38 rebounds, and Kaylah Crosson with 57 rebounds.
8. Simla (5-5)
Simla currently has a split record of 5-5 overall, are 0-1 in league play and are 3rd in the Black Forest League. The Cubs fell this last week to Burlington 62-48 but will play Dolores Huerta on 1/18 and Limon on 1/23 where they will be looking to add more wins to their record and try to avoid continuing their split success. Stat leaders for Simla are Kylie Maranville with 90 points and 69 rebounds, Carlee Cox with 81 points, 17 assists, and 66 rebounds, Katie Gotschall with 64 points and 22 assists, Kylie Brickell with 15 assists and Amara Mazerall with 48 rebounds.
9. Dayspring Christian (5-2)
The Eagles currently have a 5-2 record after defeating Platte Valley 42-26 last week to give Dayspring a 4-game winning streak. This leaves them with a 1-0 league record and puts them 3rd in the Mile High League. The Eagles will play Jefferson Academy on 1/18, Flatirons Academy on 1/20, and Skyview Academy on 1/23 and will be looking to continue their success.
10. Monte Vista (6-1)
The Pirates currently are sitting with a 6-1 record overall, only falling to Simla so far this season. They have yet to play any league games, but will be facing Sanford on 1/20, which will be a good test for both teams. Stat leaders for Monte Vista so far this season are Heysenny Beltran with 63 points and 10 assists, Zariah Archuleta with 59 points and 10 assists, Allessah Archuleta with 48 points, Angeleah Mora with 8 assists, Stephanie Lopez with 29 rebounds, Hannah Henderhan with 29 rebounds, and Daylin Castro with 25 rebounds.

We look at 6 teams who are not ranked but are off to a great start this season.
Denver Christian (7-3)
Denver Christian Fell to Wray over the weekend 52-22, which leaves the Thunder with a 7-3 overall record, 1-0 in league play and currently 1st in the Mile High League. The team will face Flatirons Academy on 1/23 where Denver Christian will be looking to add a win to their overall record. Leading the team so far are Kamiree Fuller with 122 points, 15 assists, and 24 rebounds, Noelani Book with 85 points and 30 assists, Anna Everett with 29 points and 15 assists, Fabiana Genc with 58 rebounds and Natalie Bohannon with 26 rebounds.
West Grand (6-2)
West Grand is currently 6-2 overall with a 2-0 league record and are sitting 1st in the Western Slope League. The Mustangs were able to beat De Beque last week 41-36 and will face North Park on 1/19 and Vail Christian on 1/20. Stat leaders for West Grand are Sage Wheatley with 114 points, 11 assists, and 31 rebounds, Makaila Gifford with 77 points and 28 assists, Luci Bruchez with 56 points and 65 rebounds, Taylor Martinson with 15 assists and Sara Lechman with 76 rebounds.
Mancos (6-2)
Mancos is 6-2 currently after beating Sanford 41-37 this last week. The Bluejays have yet to play any league games this season but will play their first league game on 1/19 against Telluride on the road. They will also be playing Dolores on 1/23 at home. Top performers for Mancos so far this season are Claire Goodwin with 144 points, 3 assists and 11 rebounds, Teya Yeomans with 84 points and 19 rebounds, Quincy Montoya with 63 points, 10 points, and 10 rebounds, and Jenna Wilson with 4 assists.
Wiggins (4-5)
Wiggins fell to our number one ranked team this weekend in Merino, 52-34. This leaves Merino with a 4-5 overall record, 1-1 in league play and 5th in the Lower Platte League. The Tigers will face Briggsdale on 1/19 at home and Heritage Christian on 1/20 on the road where they will be trying to up their wins and have more wins than losses on their record. Stat leaders for Wiggins are Kennedy Kerr with 149 points and 21 assists, Riley Hunt with 104 points and 86 rebounds, Taelynn Epple with 42 points and 38 rebounds, Tyleigh Fehseke with 22 assists and 45 rebounds, and Kallie Green with 10 assists.
Wray (4-6)
Wray is currently 4-6 on the season, 0-2 in league play and 9th in the Lower Platte league. They split their games this last week and lost to Akron 54-23 but beat Denver Christian 52-22. This week, the Eagles will play two league games, the first will be at home against Caliche on 1/18, and then will play Holyoke on the road on 1/19. Top players so far for Wray are Dori Saffer with 97 points and 37 rebounds, Sharon Greek with 70 points, 26 assists, and 61 rebounds, Sydnee Cheek with 62 points, 16 assists, and 37 rebounds, and Isabelle Gillham with 16 assists.
Sanford (7-3)
After beating Escalante 54-31 and losing to Mancos 41-37, the Mustangs are currently sitting with a 7-3 overall record. Sanford have yet to play a league game but will be facing Monte Vista on 1/20 and will be looking to get a win to start the league play right. Leading Sanford currently in the season are Brooklynn Reynolds with 62 points and 17 assists, Shasta Bond with 61 points, 4 assists and 23 rebounds, Claire Crowther with 32 points, Riley Willet with 5 assists and 16 rebounds and Erica Miller with 23 rebounds.
