CLASS 1A GIRLS BASKETBALL REPORT – WEEK SEVEN

The season is rapidly approaching the midpoint and a lot of big match-ups still remain. This week, we will take a look at some of the trends and key stats from across the classification.

McClave (9-0) is the only remaining unbeaten squad in the class, and the Lady Cards have been winning by an average of 31.78 points a night. They are in a chase with Flatirons Academy (8-1), Briggsdale (8-1), and Stratton (7-1) to be the first team to double digit wins. McClave hosts an unbeaten 2A Peyton team on Saturday. Flatirons hosts Rocky Mountain Lutheran (6-2) on Thursday, 2A Dayspring Christian (5-2) on Saturday, and then visits 2A Denver Christian (7-3) on Tuesday.

Stratton can’t get there until next Friday at the soonest, as the Lady Eagles host Eads (6-3) on Friday and visit 2A Merino (8-0). If they win both, they would be looking for that 10th victory next Friday at Kit Carson (6-2). No matter how their game at 2A Wiggins (4-5) goes on Friday, Briggsdale can’t get to double digits until next weekend.

Career milestones could be had this weekend for both Stratton and Briggsdale. Sedonia Isenbart heads into the weekend with 970 points in her career. She’s averaging around 20 points a game for Stratton, so she could hit 1000 in the game against Merino. Briggsdale’s Jenna Krise needs 31 points to hit the 1500-point milestone. She leads the classification at just over 26 points a night.

Flatirons’ Emma Cox went over the 1000-point plateau in the second game of the season, and at 24 points per game, a deep postseason run by the Lady Bison could bring her to the 1500 mark. Should Cox hit that milestone, she would become the second Lady Bison in as many seasons to do so, joining Kenlee Durrill, who finished her career with 1527.

Rocky Mountain Lutheran puts the second longest current winning streak on the line in the Thursday game at Flatirons Academy. The Lady Eagles have won six straight since starting the season 0-2. Ginny Slade has been a big part of that turnaround, averaging just under 20 points a game. She recently recorded her 100th career blocked shot.

Idalia (7-2) and Arickaree (7-4) are tied for the top spot in the YWKC league, which will pull Stratton and Flagler (5-4) from the Union Pacific for the District 5 tournament in February. The Lady Wolves and Lady Bison will meet next Friday in what could be the de facto league championship game. But, both have to navigate at least one league contest before then. Idalia will host Lone Star (4-5) on Friday before stepping out of conference action on Saturday for an important match-up with Eads. Arickaree visits Bethune (4-3) on Friday and Lone Star next Tuesday.

Dove Creek (7-2) rolled to its fourth straight win of the season last week, beating Nucla (5-6) for the third time. Kalie Gatlin turned in a 17-point, 10-rebound effort. It was her fourth double-double of the year.

The Arkansas Valley looks to be a three team race, with Springfield (6-4), South Baca (7-2), and Kim/Branson (5-3) fighting it out. Springfield owns a win over South Baca from early in the season, but that was in tournament play. Those two meet at the end of the month, and Springfield will face Kim/Branson at the end of the regular season. South Baca and Kim/Branson meet midway between those two contests.
