Class 2A Girls Basketball Weekly Update Week 8 by Tayler Garcia

This is the final week we will use our MileHigh Prep Report Rankings and 6 other teams who are just outside of the rankings.  Next week we start diving into the playoff race. We have just one month left of the regular season and it’s go time!

#1 Merino (10-0)

Merino is on a 10 game win streak and are maintaining their perfect record on the season. They are currently 10-0 overall, 3-0 in league play and are 2nd in the Lower Platte League. Their last wins came over Caliche (77-26) and Stratton (59-42).  This week, The Rams will face Fleming on 1/26 at home and Limon on 1/27 on the road. 

#2 Sedgwick County (8-1)

After defeating Haxtun 50-20 and Garden County (), the Cougars are on a 3-game winning streak and are 8-1 overall, 3-0 in league play and are 3rd in the Lower Platte League. Their most recent win came against Haxtun where they won 59-41. This weekend, Sedgwick County will face Perkins County on 1/25, Wiggins on 1/26 and Leyton on 1/30.  Leading the team so far this season are Abigail Dille with 147 points, 18 assists and 41 rebounds, Lainee Nein with 137 points, 24 assists and 58 rebounds, Avery Goddard with 39 points, and Chloe Thode with 13 assists and 39 rebounds. 

#3 Limon (9-3)

The Badgers are currently 9-3 overall, have a 5-0 league record and are 3rd in the Union Pacific league. Limon’s Latest wins come against Evangel Christian Academy (66-53) and Deer Trail (48-25) but Limon came up short against Simla(63-51). This week, the Badgers will be looking to expand their wins and will face Colorado Springs School on 1/26 and Merino on 1/27.  Leading the team this season are Jentri Marx with 150 points, 41 assists, and 86 rebounds, Katelyn Tacha with 107 points and 28 assists, Teal Schmidt with 43 points and 45 rebounds, Jazzy Rosler with 18 assists and Enyceia Frescas with 39 rebounds. 

#4 Burlington (8-3)

Burlington is currently on a six game winning streak after beating Genoa-Hugo/Karval 59-24 and Colorado Springs School 88-13.  With these wins, Burlington is now 8-3 overall, 5-0 in league, and 2nd in the Union Pacific League. The team will be looking to continue their win streak this weekend against Flagler on 1/26, Byers on 1/27, and Goodland on 1/30. Stat leaders for the Cougars are Kiyarra Williams with 175 Points, 25 assists, and 90 rebounds, Trinitee Holmes with 140 points, 34 assists, 89 rebounds, Lynzee Neal with 97 points, and Reagan Simpson with 39 assists and 48 rebounds. 

#5 Rangely (12-1)

With a 12-1 overall record, and a 4-0 league record, Rangely is currently sitting 2nd in the Western Slope League. The Panthers beat Little Snake River (49-34) and North Park (67-30) last week and this week, they will face Hayden on 1/26 on the road, West Grand on 1/27 at home, and Plateau Valley on 1/30 on the road. Stat leaders for Rangely are Miah Wren with 201 points and 26 assists, Ashlynn Ducey with 145 points and 21 assists, Annika Cantrell with 115 points and 132 rebounds, Miley Chrism with 23 assists and 69 rebounds, and Emmeree Wagner with 76 rebounds. 

#6 Hoehne (9-2)

Hoehne is currently 9-2 overall, with a 6-0 league record and are 1st in the Santa Fe League. The Farmers defeated Crowley County last week 58-9 and will be looking for the same success this weekend and will face SCA on 1/25, Del Norte on 1/26 and Rocky Ford on 1/30. Leading Hoehne so far this season are Janae Ramos with 129 points and 63 rebounds, Ellegra Guriterrez with 81 points and 24 assists, Phoenix San Roman with 80 points and 32 assists, Alessa Cantoria with 26 assists and 41 rebounds, and Kaylah Crosson with 62 rebounds. 

#7 Akron (5-5)

Akron lost to Yuma this weekend 50-41 which gives a recorded 5-5 record (Fleming Vs Akron score not reported). They are also 1-2 in league play and are 6th in the Lower Platte League. The Rams will face Caliche on 1/26 at home and Simla on 1/27 on the road. Stat leaders for Akron are Kinsey Grauer with 132 points, 28 assists, and 56 rebounds, Addi Kessinger with 113 points and 69 rebounds, Kashlee Randel with 86 points and 37 assists, and Becky Drum with 7 assists and 38 rebounds. 

#8 Simla (6-5)

Simla has a 6-5 overall record, are 1-1 in league and are 2nd in the Black Forest Legue. The cubs defeated Dolores Huerta 62-15 and Limon 51-36 This week, Simla will face a tough opponent in Akron on 1/27 at home. Leading the team in stats this season are Kylie Maranville with 122 points and 86 rebounds, Carlee Cox with 102 points, 22 assists and 85 rebounds, Katie Gotschall with 85 points and 28 assists, Kylie Brickell with 18 assists and Amara Mazerall with 60 rebounds. 

#9 Dayspring Christian (8-3)

Dayspring Christian went 3-1 on the week with a win against Jefferson Academy 43-37, a loss against Flatirons Academy 37-32, and wins against Bishop Machebeuf 59-28 and SkiView Academy 62-12. They are now 8-3 overall, 3-0 in league play, and are 2nd  in the Mile High League. The Eagles will face Gilpin County this week on 1/26, Wray on 1/27, and Clear Creek on 1/30 and will look to add more wins to their record. 

#10 Monte Vista (8-1)

Monte Vista is currently 8-1 after wins against Sanford (55-51 in OT) and Crested Butte. With these wins, the Pirates are 2-0 in league and are ranked 3rd in the Southern Peaks League. The team will face Cotopaxi this weekend on 1/27 and will be looking to continue their success. Leading Monte Vista right now in stats are Heysenny Beltran with 80 points and 11 assists, Zariah Archuleta with 77 points and 10 assists, Allessah Archuleta with 74 points and 11 assists, Stephanie Lopez with 36 rebounds, Hannah Henderhan with 32 rebounds, and Daylin Castro with 30 rebounds.

We look at 6 teams who are not ranked but are off to a great start this season.

West Grand

West Grand is 8-2 on the season so far, are 3-0 in league play and are 1st in the Western Slope League. The Mustangs are currently on an 8-game win streak after beating North Park 45-28 and Vail Christian 70-11. West Grand will have a bust few days this week and will play Olathe on 1/25 on the road, Soroco on 1/26 at home and Rangely on 1/27 on the road. Stat leaders for the Mustangs are Sage Wheatley with 143 points, Makaila Gifford with 96 points and 38 assists, Luci Bruchez with 86 points and 80 rebounds, Taylor Martinson with 21 assists and 39 rebounds, and Sara Lechman with 13 assists and 81 rebounds.  

Denver Christian

The Thunder are currently seeing some mixed success now in the mid-season. They are currently only 1-2 in 2024, with their most recent loss coming from Flatirons Academy (65-45). Denver Christian is currently 7-4 overall, 1-0 in league play, and ranked 1st in the Mile High League. The Thunder will be looking for success this week, and will be looking to maintain their league their success, and will face SkyView Academy on 1/27 on the road and Gilpin County on 1/30 at home. Stat leaders for Denver Christian are Kamiree Fuller with 153 points, 22 assists, and 33 rebounds, Noelani Book with 131 points and 40 assists, Anna Everett with 53 points and 18 assists, Fabiana Genc with 77 rebounds, and Natalie Bohannon with 45 rebounds. 

Mancos

Mancos is currently on a 4-game win streak, with their most recent wins coming against Telluride 55-13 and Dolores 57-15. The Bluejays are now 8-2 overall, 2-0 in league play and are 1st n the San Juan Basin League. Mancos will be looking for continued success this week and will face Dove Creek on 1/26 and 1/30, and Ridgway on 1/17. Leading the Bluejays are Claire Goodwin with 183 points, 22 assists, and 68 rebounds, Quicny Montoya with 108 points, 33 assists, and 43 rebounds, Teya Yeomans with 98 points and 101 rebounds, and Jenna Wilson with 12 assists. 

Wiggins

Wiggins is currently 5-6 overall, 1-1 in league play and are 4th in the Lower Platte League. The Tigers fell to Briggsdale last week 41-31 but where able to bounce back and get the win against Heritage Christian 51-39. This week, Wiggins will face Sedgwick County on the road on 1/26 and Prairie at home on 1/27. Leading the team this season are Kennedy Kerr with 172 points and 24 assists, Riley Hunt with 128 points and 98 rebounds, Taelynn Epple with 55 points and 47 rebounds, Tyleigh Fehseke with 22 assistsand 50 rebounds, and Kallie Green with 11 assists. 

Wray 

The Eagles are 6-6 on the season currently with a 2-2 league record and are 5th in the Lower Platte League. Last week, Wray defeated Caliche 59-43 and Holyoke 72-38. This week, they will be looking to continue their success and will face Yuma on 1.26 and DCA on 1/27. Leading the Eagles so far this season are Dori Saffer with 113 points, Sharon Greek with 93 points, 34 assists, and 66 rebounds, Sydnee Cheek with 85 points, 21 assists, and 48 rebounds, and Isabelle Gilham with 19 assists and 42 rebounds.

Las Animas 

Last week was a good week for Las Animas as they got four wins against Crowley County (36-34 in 2OT), Holly (45-29), Calhan (41-25), and Rocky Ford (45-17). The Trojans are currently 9-2 overall, have a 5-1 league record and are 2nd in the Santa Fe League. Las Animas will be looking to continue their wins this week as the face Trinidad on 1/25 at home. Top players for the Trojans so far are Jadann Eck with 110 points, 23 assists, and 52 rebounds, Emma Netherton with 90 points and 98 rebounds, Chanel LaBarge with 61 points and 34 assists, and Ava LaBarge with 22 assists and 29 rebounds.
