
2A Girls Basketball Weekly Preview Week 10

We make a small change to the way we are doing the 2A Weekly Preview this week. We will look at the top 10 teams according to the CHSAA Seeding and Selection Index. We will then look at three teams who are just outside of the top 10 and wrap things up with 6 teams on the bubble. Remember all rankings are the CHSAA Seeding and Selection Index. We less than one month left of the regular season and its crunch time. To quality for regionals, you must win your District or be ranked in the top 32 of the seeding index.

1. Merino
The Rams continue to remain perfect on the season after playing 15 games this season. With a 5-0 league record, Merino is currently sitting in 1st in the Lower Platte League. With wins this last week against Akron 50-26 and Sedgwick County 59-28, Merino will look to continue their success in the remaining 4 games of the season against Holyoke on 2/8, Yuma on 2/9, Otis on 2/13, and Haxtun on 2/16.
2. Sedgwick County
Sedgwick County is 13-2 on the season after beating Holyoke 62-40 and losing to Merino 59-28. Both losses on their record so far are from Merino. This leaves the Cougars with a 5-1 league record and they are now 2nd in the Lower Platte League. They will be looking to continue their wins to finish out the season against Yuma on 2/8. Wray on 2/9. Briggsdale on 2/13, and Fleming on 2/15. Leading the team this season are Abigail Dille with 290 points, 33 assists and 65 rebounds, Lainee Nein with 210 points, 40 assists and 121 rebounds, Ryen Carlson with 74 points, and Chloe Thode with 22 assists and 68 rebounds.
3. Rangely
Rangely defeated De Beque 66-24 this last week which now has them with a 16-1 overall record, a 7-0 league record, and they are 1st in the Western Slope League. With only two games left on the schedule for the regular season, the team will be looking for two more wins against Caprock Academy on 2.10 and Vail Christian on 2/17. Stat leaders for the Panthers are Miah Wren with 263 points and 39 assists, Ashlynn Ducey with 202 points, and 25 assists, Annika Cantrell with 136 points and 185 rebounds, Emmeree Wagner with 27 assists and 98 rebounds, and Miley Chism with 87 rebounds.
4. Hoehne
The Farmers are currently sitting 1st in the Santa Fe League with a 9-0 league record and a 13-2 overall record. Hoehne defeated La Veta last week 78-25 and Holly 75-35. With 4 games remaining this season, the team will be looking to expand their 10 game winning streak and will be facing Fowler on 2/8, Del Norte on 2/10, Walsenburg on 2/13 and Sierra Grande on 2/16. Leading the team this season are Janae Ramos with 158 points and 74 rebounds, Phoenix San Roman with 91 points and 47 assists, Braylee Foster with 91 points, Alessa Cantoria with 31 assists and 48 rebounds, Ellegra Gutierrez with 27 assists, and Kaylah Crosson with 75 rebounds.
5. Akron
Sitting 7th in the Lower Platte league with a 2-4 league record and 8-8 overall, Akron has played through a tough week this last week. They were able to get the win against Perkins County (47-38) but fell to Merino (50-26) and Wiggins (47-43). The Rams will be looking to get some wins this next week to gain some momentum into post-season play. They will be facing Hi-Plains on 2/8, Haxtun on 2/9 and Holyoke on 2/15. Stat leaders for Akron are Kinset Grauer with 219 points, 39 assists, and 82 rebounds, Kashlee Randel with 137 points and 48 assists, Addi Kessinger with 113 points and 69 rebounds, Mikenna Weers with 8 assists and Becky Drum with 63 rebounds.
6. Monte Vista
The Pirates are 11-1 overall, 3-0 in league play and are 2nd in the Southern peaks League. Their most recent wins come against Center (49-36) and Del Norte. They will be looking for continued success for the remainder of the season and will face Custer County on 2/7, South Park on 2/9, Pagosa Springs on 2/13, Sargent on 2/15 in what will likely be a league title game, and Trinidad on 2/17. Leading the team in stats are Heysenny Beltran with 97 points and 12 assists, Allessah Archuleta with 93 points and 11 assists, Zariah Archuleta with 88 points and 13 assists, Stephanie Lopez with 46 rebounds, Hannah Henderhan with 43 rebounds and Daylin Castro with 40 rebounds.
7. Dayspring Christian Academy
Dayspring continues their win streak and are now up to 7 wins in a row. They were able to defeat Dawson School 63-22 and Kiowa 47-33. This gives the Eagles a 13-3 overall record, a 6-0 league record and they are currently ranked 1st in the Mile High League. Games left on the schedule for the team are against Denver Christian on 2/9. Lyons on 2/13, and Union Colony Prep on 2/16. Leading the team in stats are Eboselulu Omofoma with 247 points, 27 assists, and 142 rebounds, Faith Hayward with 234 points and 50 assists, Nika Gomez with 68 points and 77 rebounds, and Lizzy Casey with 46 assists and 90 rebounds.
8. Sanford
Sanford is currently 11-4 overall, 3-1 in league play and are 3rd in the Southern Peaks League. The Mustangs were able to get two league wins this last week against Crested Butte (46-23) and Trinidad (36-25). Three out of the remaining four games will be league games. The remaining games will be against Sargent on 2/9, Cotopaxi on 2/10, Center on 2/16, and Del Norte 2/17. Leading the Mustangs this season are Brooklyn Reynolds with 158 points and 56 assists, Shasta Bond with 158 points, 13 assists, and 93 rebounds, Claire Crowther with 93 points, 19 assists and 49 rebounds, and Riley Willett with 68 rebounds.
9. Simla
Simla is currently 2nd on the Black Forrest League with a 2-0 league record and an 8-6 overall record. The Cubs had a huge win this last week over Colorado Springs school 73-5. They will be looking for continued success as they wrap up the regular season and will be facing Stratton on 2/9, Calhan on 2/10, ECA on 2/13, Elbert on 2/16, and Kit Carson on 2/17. Stat leaders for Simla are Kylie Maranville with 131 points and 90 rebounds, Carlee Cox with 110 points, 26 assists and 98 rebounds, Katie Gotschall with 90 points, and 29 assists, Kylie Brickell with 19 assists, and Amara Mazerall with 64 rebounds.
10. Burlington
The Cougars pulled out the win on a close game against Limon last week 49-48. This gives Burlington an 11-4 overall record, 6-0 league record and puts them in 1st in the Union Pacific League. Left on the schedule for the regular season are Stratton on 2/8, ECA on 2/10, Deer Trail on 2/15 and Dolores Huerta Prep on 2/17. Stat leaders for Burlington are Kiyarra Williams with 227 points, 39 assists, and 131 rebounds, Trinitee Holmes with 190 points, 38 assists and 105 rebound, Lynzee Neal with 134 points and 71 rebounds, and Reagan Simpson with 43 assists.
11. Limon
Limon is 11-5 overall on the season with a 4-1 league record and they are currently 3rd in the Union Pacific League. Limon had a couple of hard fought games this week and they were able to beat Wray in overtime 58-54, but fell to Burlington 49-48. This next week the Badgers will face Byers on 2/9, Fowler on 2/10 and Stratton on 2/16. Top stat leaders for the team are Jentri Marx with 234 points, 50 assists and 139 rebounds, Katelyn Tacha with 157 points and 48 assists, Teal Schmidt with 86 points and 92 rebounds, Gianna Humphrey with 29 assists and Enyceia Frescas with 62 rebounds.
12. Denver Christian
The Thunder had some big wins this last week where they beat Clear Creek 73-10 and Dawson School 74-9. This gives the team an 11-4 overall record, a 5-0 league record and puts them in 2nd in the Mile High League. To round out the season, Denver Christian will be looking for success against DCA on 2/9, Bishop Machebeuf on 2/10, Union Colony Prep on 2/13, and Heritage Christian on 2/17. Leading the team this season are Kamiree Fuller with 194 points and 30 assists, Noelani Book with 162 points and 52 assists, Anna Everett with 79 points and 48 rebounds, Fabiana Genc with 23 assists and 91 rebounds, and Natalie Bohannon with 54 rebounds.
13. Evangelical Christian
ECA is currently 1st in the Black Forest League with a 3-0 league record and an 11-3 overall record. The Eagles were able to pull out the win in a close game against Kit Carson this last week where they won 51-47. For the remainder of the regular season, ECA will see Rocky Mountain Lutheran on 2/8, Burlington on 2/10, Simla on 2/13, Calhan on 2/15 and James Irwin on 2/16. Stat leaders for the Eagles are Sara Caldwell with 126 points, Reagan Schultz with 120 points and 92 rebounds, Mia Castro with 116 points, 81 assists, and 46 rebounds, Ellie Wagner with 17 assists and 40 rebounds, and Alaina Ripple with 17 assists.
14. Sargent
Sargent is 11-3 on the season, with a 4-0 league record and are currently 1st in the Southern Peaks League. The farmers are currently on a 9 game win streak with their most recent win against Cotopaxi (51-38) and Del Norte (44-31). There are four games left in the regular season for Sargent where they will face Sanford on 2/9, South Park on 2/10, Monte Vista in a likely League title game on 2/15 and Custer County on 2/17. Leading the Farmers this season are Kandace Pargin with 160 points and 19 assists, Angelise Sandoval with 135 points and 55 rebounds, Bailey Asbell with 121 points and 71 rebounds, Makenzie Consaul with 20 assists and 50 rebounds.

We look at 6 teams who are on the bubble and fighting for a spot at regionals.
29. Gilpin County
The Eagles are currently 7-7 overall, 3-3 in league play and sitting 5th in the Mile High League. This last week, the team fell to Heritage Christian 58-39 and played Union Colony Prep (Score not reported). To wrap up regular season, Gilpin County will face Lyons on 2/9, North Park on 2/11, Bishop Machebeuf on 2/13, and Peyton on 2/16. They will be looking to have some success in these games to remain in the play-off bubble. Stat leaders for the Eagles are Faith Ramsey with 129 points, 43 assists and 92 rebounds, Elise Vincent with 116 points, 17 assists and 68 rebounds, Kailee Starkey with 99 points and 20 assists, and Anabelle Aloel with 79 rebounds.
30. Twin Peaks Charter Academy
The Timberwolves split this week with one win and won loss. They were able to beat Two Roads Charter School 41-8 but fell to Calhan 62-39. With one game left in the regular season against Weldon Valley on 2/9, Twin Peaks Charter are 11-5 overall, 5-0 in league play and are 1st in the Foothills League. Stat leaders for the Timberwolves are Ella Schauer with 124 points and 91 rebounds, Rayn Ndow with 113 points and 67 rebounds, Charlotte Hughes with 80 points and Kaleigh Van Pelt with 53 rebounds.
31. Cotopaxi
Cotopaxi lost to Sargent 51-38 and beat Crested Butte 39-30 this last week. As one of the last teams in the playoff bubble, the Pirates have a 10-5 overall record, a 3-0 league record, are 1st in the West Central league and will be looking for a couple of wins this next week to maintain their position in the Seeding Index. Their opponents to wrap up the season will be La Veta on 2/8, Sanford on 2/10, Springfield on 2/12, and Center on 2/17. Stat leaders for Cotopaxi are Hayden Eggleston with 152 points and 20 assists, Eden Merrill with 139 points and 73 rebounds, Abby Fieth with 131 points, 19 assists and 73 rebounds, Allisyn Gasseling with 17 assists and Kelsey Teter with 75 rebounds.
32.Trinidad
As the current last team in the play-off bubble, Trinidad is 8-8 overall, 0-4 in league play and are currently 7th in the Southern Peaks League. Their most recent league games resulted in two losses this last week against Del Norte (30-25) and Sanford (36-25). Looking for some success to end the season, Trinidad will play Center on 2/8, Custer County on 2/10, Dolores Huerta Prep on 2/12, South Park on 2/16, and Monte Vista on 2/17. Leaders for the Miners are Danica Shipley with 132 points, 29 assists and 79 rebounds, Layla Maes with 118 points and 17 assists, Monserrad Viera Flores with 103 points, 37 assists and 87 rebounds, and Maya Morales with 87 rebounds.
33. Byers
As a team on the outside of the playoff bubble looking in, Byers is currently 6-10 overall, 3-2 in league play and are 4th in the Union Pacific League. This last week, they lost to Stratton 55-27 but beat Deer Trail 57-18. They will be looking for other teams to trip up as well as for some success for them to move inside of the bubble. This last week, Byers will face Limon on 2/9, Colorado Springs School and Yuma on 2/16. Stat leaders for the Bulldogs are Sophie Linnebur with 125 points and 64 rebounds, Madilee Olsen with 118 points, 35 assists, and 60 rebounds, Anna Vetter with 95 points and 57 rebounds, Averie Eymann with 28 assists, and Cossette Kerns with 13 assists.
34. Swink
Swink is currently 7-9 overall, 4-6 in league play and are 6th in the Santa Fe League. This last week they were able to beat Holly 48-38, but fell to Fowler 60-31. To end the regular season, the Lions will face Las Animas on 2/9, McClave on 2/13, and Sangre de Cristo on 2/17. They will be looking for some success in these games to hopefully be able to squeeze into the play-off bubble. Top players for Swink are Hunter Wallace with 153 points and 38 assists, Jocelynn James with 108 points and 27 assists, Briana McElroy with 105 points, 19 assists, and 85 rebounds, Charlotte Heberlie with 145 rebounds and Taylor Mendenhall with 114 rebounds.
