
Class 2A Girls Basketball Weekly Update Week 11

We make a small change to the way we are doing the 2A Weekly Preview this week. We will look at the top 10 teams according to the CHSAA Seeding and Selection Index. We will then look at three teams who are on the rise and wrap things up with 6 teams on the bubble. Remember all rankings are the CHSAA Seeding and Selection Index. We less than one month left of the regular season and its crunch time. To quality for regionals, you must win your District or be ranked in the top 32 of the seeding index.

#1 Merino (18-0) (LW: 1)
Merino is 17-0 and remains perfect on the season. This also gives the team a 7-0 league record and puts them in 1st in the Lower Platte League. They played Otis on 2/13 and will wrap up their regular season on 2/16 against Haxtun. Top players for the Rams are Kya Piel with 222 points, 141 assists and 52 rebounds, Makenna Sutter with 172 points, 33 assists and 94 rebounds, Brooklyn Sutter with 164 points, and 36 assists, and Jay Lynch with 106 rebounds.
#2 Sedgwick County (15-3) (LW: 2)
Sedgwick County was able to beat Wray this last week 52-45 but fell to Briggsdale 60-51. This leaves the girls with a 15-3 overall record, a 7-1 league record, and they are currently 2nd in the Lower Platte League. Their regular season will end this week with a game against Fleming on 2/15 at home. Top performers for the Cougars are Abigail Dille with 329 points, 34 assists, and 77 rebounds, Lainee Nein with 241 points, 43 assists and 137 rebounds, Ryen Carlson with 86 points, and Chloe Thode with 25 assists and 79 rebounds.
#3 Rangely (17-1) (LW: 3)
Rangely defeated Caprock Academy 81-18 last week which extends their win streak to 12 games. The team is currently 17-1 overall, 8-0 in league play and 1st in the Western Slope League. The Panthers will end their season on 2/17 against Vail Christian where they will be looking to capture their 13th win in a row. Stat leaders for Rangely are Miah Wren with 274 points and 43 assists, Ashlynn Ducey with 211 points and 44 assists, Annika Cantrell with 148 points and 194 rebounds, Emmeree Wagner with 27 assists and 102 rebounds, and Miley Chism with 92 rebounds.
#4 Burlington (13-4) (LW: 10)
The Cougars are 13-4 overall on the season with a 7-0 league record and are currently 1st in the Union Pacific League. The team beat Stratton (49-45) and ECA (59-38) and will be looking to end their season with two more wins against Deer Trail on 2/15 and Dolores Huerta Prep on 2/17. Stat leaders for Burlington are Kiyarra Williams with 258 points, 44 assists and 158 rebounds, Trinitee Holmes with 219 points, 40 assists and 121 rebounds, Lynzee Neal with 150 points, Reagan Simpson with 43 assists and Bethany Cure with 89 rebounds.
#5 Hoehne (16-2) (LW: 5)
The Farmers are 16-2 on the season, 1st in the Santa Fe League and have a perfect 11-0 league record. After beating Del Norte (44-37) and Walsenburg (62-13) last week, Hoehne is on a 13-game winning streak. Their season will wrap up on the road this week against Sierra Grande on 2/16 where they will be looking to end with their 14th win in a row. Top players for the team are Janae Ramos with 195 points and 93 rebounds, Ellegra Gutierrez with 126 points and 37 assists, Phoenix San Roman with 120 points and 57 assists, Alessa Cantoria with 34 assists and 56 rebounds, and Kaylah Crosson with 88 rebounds.
#6 Sanford (13-4) (LW: 7)
Sanford is currently 2nd in the Southern Peaks League with a 4-1 league record and are 13-4 overall. The Mustangs have won their 6th game in a row in after beating Sargent 39-26 and Cotopaxi 40-22. They will be looking to end their season with 8 wins in a row after this week when they face Center on 2/17 and Del Norte on 2/17. Stat leaders for the team are Shasta Bond with 175 points and 104 rebounds, Brooklynn Reynolds with 174 points and 64 assists, Claire Crowther with 108 points, 23 assists and 54 rebounds, and Riley Willett with 16 assists and 76 rebounds.
#7 Akron (10-8) (LW: 4)
The Rams are 10-8 on the season with a 3-4 league record and are 6th in the Lower Platte League. They were able to beat Hi-Plains (49-41) and Haxtun (53-31) this last week and will be looking to end their season with an additional win this week against Holyoke on 2/15. Top players for Akron are Kinsey Grauer with 251 points, 54 assists and 106 rebounds, Kashlee Randel with 156 points and 62 assists, Addi Kessinger with 113 points, Mikenna Weers with 11 assists and Taylor Benish with 72 rebounds.
#8 Simla (10-7) (LW: 8)
Simla is currently 1st in the Black Forest League with a 4-0 league record and are 10-7 overall. This last week the team lost to Stratton (46-37) but were able to win against Calhan (73-15) and ECA (49-28). To wrap up the season, the Cubs will play Elbert on 2/16 on the road and Kit Carson on 2/17 at home. Top performers for the team are Kylie Maranville with 131 points and 90 rebounds, Carlee Cox with 110 points, 26 assists, and 98 rebounds, Katie Gotschall with 98 points and 29 assists, Kylie Brickell with 19 assists, and Amara Mazerall with 64 rebounds.
#9 Monte Vista (13-2) (LW: 6)
Monte Vista moved up to 1st in the Southern Peaks League with a win against South Park (43-15) and despite a loss to Pagosa Springs (56-23). The Pirates are currently 13-2 on the season, 5-0 in league play, and just lost their first game after 10 wins in a row. This week will be important to see if Monte can remain 1st in their league as they face Sargent on 2/15 and Trinidad on 2/17. A loss to either team will likely mean a loss of their league ranking. Stat leaders for the team are Allessah Archuleta with 123 points and 17 assists, Heysenny Beltran with 123 points and 15 assists, Zariah Archuleta with 120 points and 19 assists, Daylin Castro with 59 rebounds, Stefanie Lopez with 55 rebounds, ad Hannah Henderhan with 51 rebounds.
#10 Denver Christian (14-4) (LW: 12)
The Thunder are 14-4 overall with an 8-0 league record and are 1st in the Mile High League. After beating DCA (55-48), Bishop Machebeuf (76-39) and Union Colony Prep (56-20) this last week, they are on a 7-game win streak and will be looking to close out the season with win number right against Heritage Christian on 2/17. Leading the team in stats are Kamiree Fuller with 275 points and 38 assists, Noelani Book with 224 points and 78 assists, Anna Everett with 123 points and 68 rebounds, Fabiana Genc with 34 assists, and 132 rebounds, and Natalie Bohannon with 90 rebounds.
Three Teams on the Rise
We dive into three teams who are currently on the rise.
#11 Dayspring Christian Academy (14-4) (LW: 9)
Dayspring fell to Denver Christian 55-48 this last week and broke their 7-game win streak, but the Eagles were able to bounce back and beat Lyons 57-30. They are now 14-4 on the season with a 7-1 league record and are 2nd in the Mile High League. They will end their regular season this week against Union Colony Prep on 2/16 on the road. Stat leaders for the Eagles are Eboselulu Omofoma with 285 points, 28 assists and 163 rebounds, Faith Hayward with 264 points and 55 assists. Julia Krehbiel with 74 points, Lizzy Casey with 50 assists and 106 rebounds, and Nika Gomez with 89 rebounds.
#12 Limon (13-5) (LW: 11)
The Badgers are 13-5 overall this season after beating Byers (53-36) and Fowler (67-51), and are 5-1 in league play and are 2nd in the Union Pacific League. They will be looking to end their season with another win this week and will face Stratton on 2/16. Stat leaders for the Badgers are Jentri Marx with 247 points, 53 assists and 153 rebounds, Katelyn Tacha with 167 points and 50 assists, Teal Schmidt with 88 points and 95 rebounds, Gianna Humphrey with 31 assists and Enyceia Frescas with 66 rebounds.
#13 Wiggins (10-8) (LW: 18)
After beating Holyoke (48-40), and Idalia (39-31), Wiggins is 10-8 overall, 4-3 in league play and are 4th in the Lower Platte League. They will face Wray this week on 2/15 to wrap up the season and will be looking to get a win. Stat leaders for the Tigers are Kennedy Kerr are 270 points and 45 assists, Riley Hunt with 204 points and 153 rebounds, Taelynn Epple with 99 points and 98 rebounds, Tyleigh Fehseke with 29 assists and 72 rebounds, and Kallie Green with 22 assists.

#29 Twin Peaks Charter Academy
Twin Peaks in 12-5 on the season, are 5-0 in league play and are 1st in the Foothills league. This last week the team beat Weldon Valley 53-49. There are no official games on the schedule, but currently, the team has enough wins to be inside of the playoff bubble. They will be waiting until next week to make sure they remain in the bubble. Stat leaders for the team are Ella Schauer with 124 points, and 91 rebounds, Ryan Ndow with 113 points and 67 rebounds., Charlotte Hughes with 80 points, and Kaleigh Van Pelt with 53 rebounds.
#30 Byers
Byers is inside of the playoff bubble with a 7-11 overall record, 3-3 league record and are 4th in the Union Pacific League. Last week they lost to Limon 53-36 but were able to beat Colorado Springs School 65-7. This week they will be looking to get a win against Yuma on 2/16 to wrap up their season and stay inside of the playoff bubble. Top players for the team are Sophie Linnebur with 160 points and 76 rebounds, Madilee Olsen with 139 points, 41 assists and 64 rebounds, Anna Vetter with 107 points, Averie Eymann with 41 assists, Cossette Kerns with 16 assists, and Hope Linnebur with 64 rebounds.
#31 Cotopaxi
With a win against La Veta (50-30) and two losses against Sanford (40-22) and Springfield (32-20), the Pirates find themselves inside of the playoff bubble with an 11-7 overall record, a 3-0 league record and 1st in the West Central League. Their last game of the season will be against Center on 2/17 on the road where they will be looking for a win to ensure their spot in post-season play. Stat leaders for Cotopaxi are Hayden Eggleston with 216 points and 24 assists, Abby Fieth with 166 points, 20 assists and 95 rebounds, Eden Merrill with 158 points, Allisyn Gasseling with 22 assists and 100 rebounds, and Kelsey Teter with 124 rebounds.
#32 Trinidad
Trinidad is currently right on the edge of the playoff bubble. They are 9-9 overall on the season with an 0-5 league record and are 7th in the Southern Peaks League. They last to Center in OT last week 46-41 but were able to beat Dolores Huerta 41-17. This week they will play Custer County on 2/14, South Park on 2/16 and Monte Vista on 2/17 where they will need some wins to ensure their spot in the playoffs. Stat leaders are Danica Shipley with 155 points, 32 assists and 89 rebounds, Layla Maes 153 points, Monserrad Viera Flores with 105 points 48 assists and 72 rebounds, Jesse Gegelman with 19 assists, and Maya Morales with 99 rebounds.
#33 Swink
Swink has only won one game in February and is currently on a 3 game losing streak. For a team that is on the cusp of the playoff bubble, it is not the success that is needed during this part of the season. The Lions are currently 7-11 overall with a 4-7 league record and are 7th in the Santa Fe League. They fell to McClave last week (62-19) and will be looking for a win to end their regular season against Sangre de Cristo on 2/17. Top players on the team this season are Hunter Wallace with 161 points and 39 assists, Jocelynn James with 117 points and 27 assists, Briana McElroy with 115 points, 19 assists and 91 rebounds, Charlotte Heberlie with 147 rebounds and Taylor Mendenhall with 118 rebounds.
#34 Addenbrooke Classical Academy
Addenbrooke Classical Academy is 13-4 on the season with a 6-0 league record and are 1st in the Confluence league. They are currently on a 9 game win streak and played Denver Waldorf on 2/13. They will finish their regular season on 2/15 against Thomas MacLaren School where they will be hoping to end their season inside of the playoff bubble. They are currently just outside. Stat leaders for the team are Reena Lanzen with 226 points, Lucia Rodriguez with 216 points, 57 assists and 132 rebounds, Peyton Trujilo with 119 points, 42 assists and 90 rebounds, and Angela Morton with 21 assists and 62 rebounds.
