Class 2A Boys Basketball Daily Digest-Feb 20th
Two of the eight districts have already opened district bracket play. 7 of the 8 District will take care of the opening round tonight. Semifinals won’t begin play until Thursday at the earliest in Class 2A.

District One (Quarterfinals hosted by Higher Seed)
#1 Sanford beat Trinidad on 2/3 56-22. Sanford is a lock for regionals sitting inside the top 10 of the Seeding Index. Trinidad would need to win the district to get to regionals.
Monte Vista drew the #2 seed and will face #7 Center in one of the quarterfinals in the bottom half of the bracket. Monte Vista defeated Center during the regular 73 to 37 on 2/3. Monte Vista could essentially lock up a spot at regional with a win over Center. Monte Vista sits at #22. Center would need to win the district to get to regionals.
The other two quarterfinal games should be good ones. #4 Cotopaxi will host #5 Del Norte and Cotopaxi will look to advance into the semifinals something they did not a year ago. Cotopaxi defeated Del Norte over a month ago 52 to 36. Cotopaxi was paced by Terrance Evans who scored 19 points and 7 rebounds and Joel Tezak pitched in another 17 points. Del Norte was led by Kelby Mondragon who scored 14 points in the game. This is a huge game for both teams. Cotopaxi sits at #30 in the Seeding Index and Del Norte sits at #39. A loss for Del Norte eliminates them for regional contention while a loss for Cotopaxi could also hurt their shot at reaching regionals.
The final matchup should also be a good one. #3 Sargent defeated #6 Custer County on a buzzer beater on Saturday 50 to 49. No stats for the game are posted, but the game was secured on a last second 3-point by Corbyn Wright. Sargent with a win over Custer County will get to regionals regardless of the Semifinal result. Sargent sits at #19. Custer County is at #44 in the Seeding Index and would need to win the district to get into regionals.
Semifinals will be played Thursday 2/22 at Centauri High School.
District Two (Quarterfinals hosted by Higher Seed)
#1 Merino defeated #8 Haxtun this past Saturday 77 to 36. Merino will hope for a similar result and Haxtun will look to make changes from that matchup. Merino is a lock for regionals sitting at #2 in the Seeding Index. Haxtun sits at #38 and need the upset of Merino to have a shot at regionals.
Wray comes into the District Tournament as the #2 seed and will host #7 Caliche. Wray defeated Caliche just over a month ago 75 to 41. Wray is a lock for regionals sitting at #8 in the Seeding Index. Caliche is in a must win scenario. Caliche sits at #37 and need to upset Wray to have a shot at regionals.
Holyoke drew the #3 seed and will host #6 Sedgwick County. Holyoke has defeated Sedgwick County twice this season defeating them on 12/14 52 to 41 and on 2/2 54 to 31. The most recent matchup saw Reid Sprague lead the dragons with 17 points and 11 rebounds while getting 13 points from Cash Webert. No stats were entered for Sedgwick County. Holyoke is another team who is a lock for regional sitting at #10. Sedgwick County is sitting on the bubble at #26. A win for Sedgwick County would get them in. A loss shouldn’t hurt their shot at regionals, but they will not have control of their own fate.
The final matchup to mention in District Two should be good as #4 Akron hosts #5 Wiggins. Their last matchup was a dandy with Akron defeating Wiggins 45 to 44. Akron was paced by Caleb Poss who scored 19 point and 15 rebounds while also getting 12 points from Ryan McCaffrey. Wiggins was led by Caden Green & Jackson Adams who both scored 10 in the game. Akron sits at #24 and Wiggins sits at #27 in the seeding index. A win for either team should get them into regionals while a loss shouldn’t eliminate them but puts their fate up to the Seeding Index.
Semifinals will be played on Friday 2/23 at NJC.
District Three
This District does not kick off till 2/23 with the Semifinals.
District Four (Higher Seed hosts Quarterfinals)
Heritage Christian comes into the tournament as the #1 seed and received a bye. They will face the winner of #4 Poudre Community and #5 Dayspring Christian.
Loveland Classical earned the #2 seed and they will host #7 Nederland. Loveland Classical and Nederland did not meet during the regular season. Loveland Classical with a win should punch their ticket to regionals as they sit at #18. Nederland would need to win the district tournament to get to regionals.
Union Colony Prep enters the district tournament as the #3 seed, and they will host #6 Twin Peaks Charter. These two teams did not face each other during the regular season. Both teams sit outside the top 40 of the seeding index. Union Colony Prep is at #43 with Twin Peaks Charter at #50. Both teams would need to win the district tournament to get into regionals.
Poudre Community hosting Dayspring Christian rounds out the District Four Tournament. These two teams also did not face each other during the regular season. Poudre Community sits at #45 and Dayspring Christian sits at #46 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Both teams would also need to win the District Tournament to get to regionals.
Semifinals will be played on 2/22 at Platte Valley High School.
District Five (Higher Seed Hosts Quarterfinals)
Plateau Valley earned the #1 seed and received a bye into the Semifinals. They will await the winner of #4 Hayden vs #5 Rangely.
The main event in Opening round of District 5 is #4 Hayden hosting #5 Rangely. Hayden defeated Rangely 69 to 49 back in January. Hayden was led by Cale Howard who scored 22 points and had 5 assists in the game. Rangely was led by Marcos Quintana who had 13 points in the loss. This is a must win game for either team. Hayden sits at #36 in the seeding index and must win this game. Rangely is at #42 and a win also gives them a shot at regionals. The losing team will see their regional hopes dashed.
The other two quarterfinal games pit #2 Vail Mountain hosting #7 West Grand. Vail Mountain defeated West Grand 49 to 23 a few weeks ago. The final quarterfinal game is #3 Vail Christian vs #6 Soroco. Vail Christian defeated Soroco at the beginning of January 58 to 33.
District Six (Higher Seed Hosts Quarterfinals)
District Six already had two of the four quarterfinal games completed. Walsenburg picked up the win over Las Animas 70 to 55. The win punches the ticket for Walsenburg to regionals. Las Animas on the other hand will await to see their fate. Las Animas sits at #28 in the Seeding Index and will be scoreboard watching to see if they get in. The other Quarterfinal game saw Holly defeat Hoehne 67 to 54. Holly with the win punches their ticket to regionals as they sit inside the top 15 of the seeding index. Hoehne is in a much different position. Hoehne sits at #33 and would be the first team out currently. Hoehne will need some help to get into the top 32.
The remaining Quarterfinal games in District Six pit the #1 seeds from the West & East against the #4 teams from the West & East. East #1 Crowley County hosts Swallows Charter. They last meet in December with Crowley County winning big 59 to 20. Crowley County was led by Anthoni Walter (12 points) & Gunner Hughes (10 points). Swallows Charter got 6 points from Christian Garcia in the loss.
The final matchup is an important one as West #1 Fowler hosts Swink. Fowler defeated Swink at the beginning of February 65 to 41. Fowler was led by a trio of players who all broke the 10-point mark in Gage Gottbehuet, Wyatt Bates, and Harrison Proctor. Swink was led by Nate Cabrera with 16 points. Fowler with a win should punch their ticket to regionals. Swink is on the bubble at #29 and a win would probably push them off the bubble. Swink with a loss will put their fate into the Seeding Index as they hope to get to regionals.
District 7
District 7 saw one of the two opening round games kick off last night. #3 Addenbrooke Classical defeated Gilpin County 76 to 28. That win was important, but they are still on the bubble at #31. Addenbrooke Classical will face Golden View Classical on Friday 2/23.
The final matchup in the opening round of District 7 pits #4 Denver Academy vs #5 Front Range Christian. Denver Academy defeated Front Range Christian 67 to 52 two weeks ago. Denver Academy had a pair of players score over 20 points in Luc Stanley and Riley Allen. Zach Woo scored 15 points for Front Range Christian. This is a must win for Denver Academy as they sit at #41 in the seeding index.
District 8 (Higher Seed hosts Quarterfinals)
We wrap things up with District 8 which kicks off their quarterfinals tonight. Simla earned the #1 seed, and they kick things off against #8 ECA. Simla defeated ECA last week 65 to 36. Limon is your #2 seed, and they will be favored against #7 Dolores Huerta. Limon defeated Dolores Huerta back in early January 74 to 38.
#3 Burlington kicks off district play hosting #6 CS School. Burlington defeated CS School back in January 46 to 30. Keziah Williams (13 points) and Rowdy Humrich (13 points) led the way for the Cougars. CS School did not post any stats for the game. Burlington sits at #17 and I think are in very good shape to reach regionals. CS School would be the last team into regionals at #32. A loss for CS School won’t hurt but they would then hope to hold off the few teams chasing the final spot for regionals.
The final matchup in district 8 should be a good one with #4 Byers hosting #5 Elbert. Byers defeated Elbert in their only meeting 53 to 38 but that was back in December. Byers was led by Quincy Eacret who scored 11 points and racked up 11 boards. Logan LaFollette led Elbert with 12 points in the loss. Byers is in solid shape to reach regionals sitting at #15 in the Seeding index. Elbert is also in good position at #20. This game could be helpful for improving regional seeding.
