CLASS 1A GIRLS BASKETBALL DAILY DIGEST – FEB. 21ST

After a busy night on Tuesday, only two games are on the docket tonight. District 3 has will have its finalists by the end of the night. District 8 worked its way through the semifinals last night, while five other tournaments completed quarterfinals.

DISTRICT TWO

Kit Carson got 18 points and 15 rebounds from Lindsey Mayhan in its 41-25 quarterfinal victory over #4 Granada, earning the Lady Wildcats a shot at #1 McClave in the semifinals on Thursday. Eads rolled #7 Wiley 56-25, and will face #3 Cheyenne Wells in the other semifinal. Aubry Carroll had 17 points for the Lady Tigers, and the duo of Aliyah Muth and Paige Ryser each had 10 in the 43-26 victory over #6 Cheraw.

DISTRICT THREE (ALL GAMES AT LA JUNTA HS)

Top-seeded South Baca squares off against #4 La Veta in one of the two semifinals at La Junta High School, after the Lady Redhawks earned their way into the match-up by beating #5 Primero 51-45 on Monday. Aspen Autry pumped in 28 points in the win for La Veta.

The two teams won’t have to go back very far to scout their opponent, as they met last Friday. South Baca eked out a 45-43 victory, despite Autry’s 22 points.

The other semifinal will have #2 Springfield taking on the challenge of #3 Kim/Branson, a 41-22 winner over #6 Walsh on Monday. Ysabel Gonzalez (11) and Lexi Winford (10) combined for 21 points in that victory.

Like the two other semifinalists, these two also met last Friday. Springfield won that contest 34-15, behind nine points and nine rebounds from Bay Ellis. Dakota Reid added eight points. Gonzalez had five for the Lady Mustangs.

The losers of the semifinals will hook up for third place on Friday.

DISTRICT FOUR

Fourth-seeded Weldon Valley won the only quarterfinal to be played in District 4 on Tuesday, beating #5 Peetz 47-37. That earned the Lady Warriors a semifinal date with #1 Briggsdale on Thursday. The other semifinal will have #2 Fleming tussling with #3 Prairie.

DISTRICT FIVE

Three of the four top seeds picked up quarterfinal victories last night, with only #4 Arickaree being upset. Top-seeded Stratton had little trouble getting past #8 Bethune, winning 60-28. The Lady Eagles will meet #5 Otis in the semis on Friday, after the Lady Bulldogs took a 36-29 win over Arickaree. Aedyn Tribelhorn had 13 points for the Lady Bulldogs, and Alli Hornung added 10.

Idalia built up a big lead over #7 Lone Star before fending off a fourth quarter rally to advance to the semifinals, 42-32. Jaylyn Kechter had yet another double-double, recording 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Wolves. They will face #3 Hi-Plains, who held off #6 Flagler, 43-35.

DISTRICT SIX

Top-seeded Sangre de Cristo found out that it will face #4 Centennial in the semifinals on Friday, after the Lady Rams beat #5 Lake City 47-26 on Tuesday. Creede, the #2 seed, beat #7 Antonito 60-22 on Tuesday, while #3 Sierra Grande moved past #6 Moffat 54-12. The Lady Panthers got 19 points from Jaylyn Quezada and 16 from Alexia Gonzalez.

DISTRICT SEVEN

Pikes Peak Christian earned a shot at #1 Kiowa by beating #5 Deer Trail 41-32 on Tuesday. The Lady Eagles will play the top-seeded Lady Indians in the semifinals on Friday. Genoa-Hugo/Karval (#2) beat #7 Cripple Creek-Victor 56-18, and will play #3 Hanover in the other semifinal. Lavana Sweazy poured in 32 points in the Lady Hornets’ victory over #6 Miami-Yoder.

DISTRICT EIGHT

The placing games in District 8 are set for Saturday, with #1 Flatirons Academy meeting #2 Rocky Mountain Lutheran in the finals, and #3 Front Range Baptist squaring off against #4 Mile High Academy for third place.

Flatirons rolled Mile High Academy 90-12 in the semifinals on Tuesday, and Rocky Mountain Lutheran downed Front Range Baptist by a 36-22 count. Ginny Shade had 15 points for the Lady Eagles, who outscored the Lady Falcons 19-8 in the fourth quarter.

CLASS 1A BOYS BASKETBALL DAILY DIGEST – FEB. 21ST

Just six games are on the slate for Wednesday night, with quarterfinal action in District 5, and semifinals in District 3. Only District 1 has yet to play any of the contests in its bracket, and they start on Thursday.

DISTRICT TWO

Two of the three quarterfinals in District 2 followed the chalk, as #2 Eads beat #7 Kit Carson 67-44, and #3 Cheyenne Wells collected a 42-14 win over #6 Wiley. Corey Hill had a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Tigers in the latter of those two games.

The lone upset came when #5 Granada bounced #4 Cheraw 56-48. Maddox Coleman had 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Bobcats, who also got 12 points apiece from Jonus Guevara and Jose Sanchez. The Bobcats will meet #1 McClave in the semis on Thursday.

DISTRICT THREE (ALL GAMES AT LA JUNTA HS)

Top-seeded Springfield will look to strengthen its positioning in the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index when it takes on #4 South Baca in the semifinals on Wednesday. The Patriots made their way to the final four of the tournament with a 49-48 win over #5 Walsh on Monday. Hayden Brooks was one of three South Baca players in double figures, scoring 15 points.

Springfield beat South Baca 48-42 back on Dec. 2nd, getting 22 points and eight rebounds from Colby Batterton. Brooks had 13 and 13 in the loss. The teams met again at the end of January, and this time it was the Patriots who came out on top, 61-59. Landen Stegman went for 27 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Patriots. Marco Zarazua led Springfield with 17 points and 12 boards.

Primero punched its ticket to the semifinals by beating #7 Manzanola 64-28 on Monday. The opponent for the Bulldogs in the semifinals, #3 Kim/Branson, took care of #6 La Veta in the quarters, 57-48. The Mustangs had four in double figures in that win, led by Kolter Cranson with 14.

If the first meeting between the Bulldogs and Mustangs is an indicator of how round two will go, oxygen could be in short supply, with fans holding their collective breath. Primero escaped Kim/Branson with a 55-54 win, despite Trotter Watkins’ 15 points and Cranson’s double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds.

The semifinal losers will play for third place on Friday.

DISTRICT FOUR

Fleming notched a 48-37 victory over #5 Weldon Valley in the quarters on Tuesday, securing a semifinal appearance for the Wildcats. They’ll meet top-seeded Peetz on Thursday. The other semifinal will have #2 Prairie meeting #3 Briggsdale. That’s a rematch from last weekend.

DISTRICT FIVE (GAMES AT STRATTON AND ARICKAREE)

The top two seeds in District 5 earned the right to host quarterfinal pods. Stratton, the top seed, gets the postseason started by hosting #8 Bethune. They did not meet in the regular season, but they did square off in the quarterfinals last season. Rustin Williams and Cyler Notter combined for 30 points in the 75-23 win almost exactly one year ago.

The earlier quarterfinal in Stratton will have #4 Otis taking on #5 Hi-Plains. They met almost three weeks ago, with Otis taking a 70-41 victory. Sawyer Packer had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs, and Charlie Kendrick added 14 points and nine boards. Aiden Cordell (17) and Bex Seaman (15) combined for 32 points for the Patriots.

Arickaree moved past Idalia in the final moments of the regular season to earn the #2 seed. The Bison will host #7 Lone Star, looking to back up last month’s 54-32 win on the road. Dillon Noletubby pumped in 17 points for the Bison, while Austin Wright and Jake King each scored 14. Jesus Hermosillo was the lone Longhorn in double figures, scoring 10.

Idalia will meet #6 Flagler in the earlier quarterfinal at Arickaree. The Wolves had their 13-game winning streak snapped last Thursday, but got back in the win column in the regular season finale. They beat the Panthers 63-27 last month, behind 14 points from Kale Morris and 13 apiece from Kolby Morris and Gabe Kechter. Cody Homm and Brayden Hill both had seven for the Panthers.

DISTRICT SIX

Moffat made its way into the semifinals with a 57-45 victory over #5 Creede on Tuesday. The Cowboys will meet #1 Sierra Grande on Friday. Like the top seed, #2 Sangre de Cristo had a bye into the semifinals. The Thunderbirds will face #3 Centennial, who beat #6 Antonito 66-32 on Tuesday.

DISTRICT SEVEN

Top-seeded Pikes Peak Christian got to sit back and watch everyone else slug it out last night, and the Eagles know they will meet #4 Hanover in the semifinals on Friday. The Hornets edged #5 Kiowa 38-36 in the quarterfinals.

The second seed in the tournament, Genoa-Hugo, had no trouble with #7 Deer Trail, as Trey Smith led six Pirates with seven or more points in the 61-28 victory. The senior had a game-high 12 points. The Pirates will draw #6 Cripple Creek-Victor in the semifinals after the Pioneers upset #3 Miami-Yoder, 54-50. Myles Durham led the way with 20 points. Chase Lohmeier and Damian Reyes both scored 12 points, with all of their points coming on three-point buckets.

DISTRICT EIGHT

District 8 is up to the semifinals, which will take place on Thursday. Top-seeded Denver Jewish Day meets #4 Front Range Baptist in one of those contests. The other will have #2 Belleview Christian tangling with #3 Flatirons Academy.
