Quick Friday Update Class 2A & 1A State Tournament

We kick off consolation action this morning in Class 1A and Class 2A.  I have decided to post quick updates on Class 2A and a quick update of yesterday in Class 1A.

Quick Recap of Class 1A Thursday

Boys:

#1 McClave over #8 Idalia 53 to 36.  The #1 seed in the Class 1A Boys State Tournament got started on the right foot right with a hard-fought win over a tough Idalia team.  McClave had a big third quarter outscoring Idalia 15 to 8.  McClave advances to the Final 4

#4 Stratton over #5 Flatirons Academy 65 to 49.  Stratton advanced into the final 4 with a strong win over the #5 seeded Flatirons Academy.  Stratton had a pair of strong quarters in the second and third quarter.  Stratton outscored Flatirons Academy in those quarters 39 to 18.  Stratton advances into the Final 4.

#3 Denver Jewish Day over #6 Sierra Grande 55 to 44.  The defending State Champions started their title defense with a solid 55 to 44 win over a good Sierra Grande squad.  DJD was able to slow down the quick attack of the Panthers to secure the win.  DJD advances into the Final 4.

#2 Cheyenne Wells over #7 Peetz 45 to 28.  Cheyenne Wells kicked off their state tournament with a big 45 to 28 win over a tough Peetz squad.  This was a very close game at halftime with Cheyenne Wells holding the two point lead over Peetz.  An 11 to 4 third quarter and a 10 to 2 fourth quarter were what pushed the Tigers to the win.  Cheyenne Wells advances into the Final 4.

Girls:

#1 McClave over #8 Kit Carson 67 to 47

McClave kicked of their State Tournament with a solid 67 to 47 win over league rival Kit Carson.  I believe this was their 3rd meeting of the season with McClave winning all matchups.  McClave will advance to the final four.

#4 Briggsdale over #5 Idalia 54 to 46

The defending State Champions Briggsdale started their title defense with a 54 to 46 win over Idalia.  Jenna Krise for Briggsdale was held in check but the rest of the squad stepped up to help the Falcons advance back into the final 4.  Briggsdale will face McClave in the Final 4 which is a rematch of the State Championship of last year.

#3 Flatirons Academy over #6 Dove Creek 49 to 29

Flatirons Academy advanced into the Final 4 with a solid 49 to 29 win over Dove Creek.  This was a close game at halftime with Dove Creek having a solid first half.  Flatirons Academy turned things up in the second half and close out with a hard fought win over Dove Creek.

#2 Stratton over #7 Eads 43 to 35

Stratton started their State Tournament run with a hard fought 43 to 35 win over Eads.  This was a close contest thru the entire game and came down to the wire and clutch free throw shooting for Eads.  Stratton will face Flatirons Academy in the Final 4 tonight.

#8 Mancos over #4 Hoehne 38 to 31 (Girls Game)

If you want defense then this was the game for you.  Scoring was limited in the first quarter with Mancos holding Hoehne scoreless in the First Quarter 5-0.  Hoehne bounced back in the 2nd quarter cutting the lead to 3 and making it 11 to 8.  Both teams were playing blanket defense forcing multiple turnovers in the game.  Things stayed close in the 3rd quarter with Mancos holding just a two-point lead.  It looked like free throws were going to be the deciding factor in the game and it was.  Mancos went 24 of 34 from the free throw line and was the deciding factor.  Mancos would pick up the win 38 to 31 and clinch their spot into the 5th Place game.

#3 Crowley County over #7 Denver Christian 38 to 35

The final game of the morning session and the final game of the consolation semifinals.  This was a tale of two halves with Denver Christian leading 23 to 13 at halftime.  Crowley County wouldn’t die being down 12 points they turned up the defensive pressure.  Crowley County would cut the lead and tie things up heading into the fourth quarter at 28 points.  Crowley County would look to complete the comeback but not without some drama first.  A turnover with just 3.4 second left would give Denver Christian a shot to send the game into overtime.  The shot would not fall and would give Crowley County the lead.
