Quick Friday Update Class 2A State Tournament

We kick off consolation action this morning in Class 1A and Class 2A.  I have decided to post quick updates on Class 2A.

Quick Recap of Class 2A Thursday

Boys:

#1 Simla defeated #8 Fowler 54 to 30.  It was a strong second half effort for Simla to help them get the win.  Fowler at one point had the game down to just four points.  Simla strong defensive effort was key in the win.

#5 Limon over #4 Heritage Christian 43 to 38.  This was a very physical game that came down to the end.  Limon built the lead early in the game but a strong push by Heritage Christian late made it just a one score game.  Limon hit some key free throws to secure the win.

#6 Sanford over #3 Crowley County 52 to 43.  Crowley County took the lead into halftime behind a 18 to 4 second quarter.  Things would change in the second half with Sanford ramping up the defensive pressure and getting the offense going.  Sanford would outscore Crowley County in the second half 35 to 19 to advance to the Final 4.

#2 Merino over #7 Denver Christian 61 to 52.  This was another physical game that came down to each small mistakes.  Merino would get some clutch scoring from their leaders and also key defensive stops to help them advance.

Girls:

#1 Merino over #8 Mancos 61 to 29

Mancos came out hot early in the game and this was a close game after the first quarter.  Merino ramped up the defensive pressure and took control of the tempo.  Defense was key to Merino expanding their lead and advancing.

#5 Simla over #4 Hoehne 50 to 38

Early foul trouble got Hoehne in trouble in the first half but this game lived up to the hype of one of the better first round games.  Simla was able to use their defensive pressure to expand their lead and advance.

#3 Burlington over #6 Denver Christian 63 to 50

Burlington used their size and a great defensive effort to help them push past Denver Christian.  Denver Christian was able to keep things close and closed the gap but a huge effort by Kiyarra Williams and Trintee Holmes helped the Cougars advance.

#7 Wiggins over #2 Rangely

A pair of key injuries hurt both teams but defense was the key in this game.  Wiggins played great on defense the entire game and used their height advantage to snag the win.  Rangely had their shot down just 1 late in the 3rd quarter but the defense for Wiggins took control and helped them advance.

Friday Class 2A Consolation Games

#6 Denver Christian over #2 Rangely 60 to 46

We kicked things off at 8:45am with #2 Rangely vs #7 Denver Christian.  Denver Christian came out shooting hot this morning getting the early lead for Denver Christian.  In the game Denver Christian hit 8 3 three pointers and used their halfcourt trap to force defensive pressure.  Rangely played tough the entire game and in the third quarter had cut the lead to just 8 points.  Denver Christian would defeat Rangely and advance to the 5th Place game.  Rangely season comes to an end but a great year for the Panthers.

#4 Heritage Christian over #8 Fowler 63 to 39

The first boys’ game of the consolation bracket was Heritage Christian facing off against Fowler.  This game would start close with Fowler holding the early first quarter lead.  Heritage Christian would respond with a monster 2nd quarter and would never look back.  Heritage Christian outscored fowler 20 to 8 in the second quarter to lead going into halftime 32 to 20.  Heritage Christian would extend the lead in the second half and secure the win.  Heritage Christian advances into the 5th Place game tomorrow morning.  The Grizzlies see their season come to an end but played well this year reaching the state tournament.
