Congratulation to your Class 1A Boys State Champions and State Tournament Recap

Congratulations to the Cheyenne Wells Tigers on winning the Class 1A State Championship.  Cheyenne Wells wins their first State Title since 1955 snapping a 69-year streak.

The Class 1A Boys State Tournament Field was one of the more balanced fields in a long time.  I would say three teams’ names kept being brought up as favorites, but all 8 teams were looking to bring home the hardware.  The best game of the opening round was the defending State Champions Denver Jewish Day vs Sierra Grande.  This was a great game with Sierra Grande trailing the defending State Champions 22 to 18 at halftime.  Sierra Grande would try and make their run in the second half but shooting just 17% from 3-point range and 34% from the field saw Sierra Grande not able to cut into the lead.  Denver Jewish Day would advance into the Semifinals.  The other games in the opening round were McClave over Idalia 53 to 36, Stratton over Flatirons Academy 65 to 49, and Cheyenne Wells over Peetz 45 to 28.

The consolation semifinals would see a pair of tough games.  Flatirons Academy would take on Idalia.  Flatirons Academy would get the early lead and not look back holding a 51 to 33 lead into the fourth quarter.  Idalia would then make their move and got hot from the field.  Idalia would start cutting into the lead and outscore Flatirons Academy 27 to 18 but were just to far behind and Flatirons Academy would win 69 to 60.  The other semifinal was Sierra Grande vs Peetz.  Peetz would take control early in the game holding the halftime lead 27 to 21 and hoped to end the game strong.  Sierra Grande would not go down quietly and would have a monster second half.  Sierra Grande would outscore Peetz 32 to 12 in the second half behind a huge game from senior Brian Ontiveros who had 27 points.  Sierra Grande would advance to the Consolation Championship.

The Championship Semifinals featured the top 4 seeds.  We kicked things off with Cheyenne Wells vs Denver Jewish Day.  Cheyenne Wells would come out hot in this game going on a 14-0 run to start the game and then turning to their suffocation defense to lock down the win.  Cheyenne Wells would win 40 to 23 behind a huge defensive effort.  The other semifinal was #1 McClave vs #4 Stratton and this was a good one.  McClave would take the early four-point lead, but Stratton kept things close, and we would see McClave lead 21 to 18 at halftime.  The second half was going to be intense with McClave holding a four-point lead going into the fourth quarter.  Stratton would tie things up in the fourth quarter at 37 a piece before a two-point basket by Tuff Kelley would secure the win for McClave 39 to 37.  McClave would meet Cheyenne Wells for the rubber match.

Championship Saturday was kicked off by Flatirons Academy defeating Sierra Grande 65 to 55.  Sierra Grande would take the early advantage, but Flatirons Academy made their push late and helped them secure the consolation championship.  The third-place game was technically the final game to happen to UNC.  Stratton would face the defending State Champions in the third-place game, and this was the highest scoring game of the 1A Tournament.  Stratton and DJD were tied after the first quarter, but Stratton came out firing in the second quarter and outscore DJD 22 to 16.  The second half saw Stratton score 21 points in the third quarter and 20 in the fourth quarter.  DJD would keep things close, but Stratton played tough defense in the fourth quarter to secure them the win.  Stratton would defeat Denver Jewish Day 74 to 63.  The State Championship featured Cheyenne Wells vs McClave.  This was the third meeting between these two rivals with each team getting a win.  Cheyenne Wells would set the ton early in this game and would outscore McClave 19 to 4 to get things started.  McClave would cut into the lead going into halftime but still trailed 24 to 12.  Cheyenne Wells would not lose another quarter and continue to expand their lead in the second half.  Cheyenne Wells was paced by big my Corey Hill while McClave was led by senior Conner Forgue.  Cheyenne Wells would win 55 to 36.

Once again Congratulations to the Cheyenne Wells Tigers on winning the Class 1A Boys State Championship.
